**The reason for asking you to find/add more articles some weeks is for you to see how much there is to inform you ahead, past graduation, when you need to continue to keep learning going yourself. By then, you should bring new perspectives to the articles and changing ideas/ways of doing nearly everything.

***When NYT responses are due on a day when a case analysis is due, send ONE email with both NYT responses and case analysis included with abbreviated case name in the subject line (e.g., Google 2:30). If you are emailing with a question or about an absence, put QUESTION or ABSENCE in the subject line. Always put the start time of your section in the subject line and always send using your Baruch email account to Linda.Lopez@baruch.cuny.edu (NOT baruchmail). When responding to case questions (cases and questions found at the end of textbook chapters), recall these are analyses, not responses of one or two lines.

****Attendance is required for all panel presentations as well as for any class featuring a guest speaker. If you must leave class early, sign out on the back of the attendance sheet, noting the time and reason for leaving early. Your participation credit may be adjusted for late arrivals and early departures. > This is a discussion-based course; electronic devices/books & materials for other courses should remain in your bags unless other instructions are given. No more than 3 absences without prior approval. Any late work will drop a letter grade each day, beginning from the grade earned. Conduct yourself as if in a new job, i.e., notifying me in advance if you are ill, etc.; making sure work is complete and on time for the sake of optimal performance and impression management.

Deeply imprint this on your brain for the term.

Feb. 17: Read Chapters 2, 3, 4 and submit your analysis of the Galen case in chapter 2, this time, instead of doing the case questions, listing 15 problems (mgmt. and communication problems) and analyzing the effectiveness of the new VP’s message to the managers and the representative response. Your 1st set of 7 NYT responses should be attached to your Galen response. There will be some time allotted for panels to meet today.

Feb. 22--24: Advertising applications: bring an ad sample to share with the class and a one-paragraph analysis of its apparent strategy/purpose to submit based on the advertising chapter guidelines. You can bring a print ad or use a sample available online. Submit this analysis in hard copy with a copy of the ad or screen shot.

Grading Guidelines for All Assignments (Panels and Case Analyses)

The case-method approach encourages students to begin a process of lifelong learning based on the analysis and critical-thinking skills the course seeks to develop. Within the timeframe of the course, however, these guidelines note evaluation criteria:

A-range evaluation: Clear, comprehensive, insightful analysis that makes a strong argument for the position taken. Clarity and verbal/written skills are excellent. The work is on time.

B-range evaluation: Clear, sensible analysis that makes a good case for the position taken but does not address all key issues. Good clarity and verbal/written skills are evident. The work is on time or is a late A-paper.

C-range evaluation: A good beginning of an analysis supported by the case situation/facts but not fully developed or strongly argued. Good clarity and verbal/written skills but in need of a more careful edit. The work is on time or is a late B-paper.

D and below evaluation: Work is incomplete, off target, and/or late.

Note: Your first case analysis will be evaluated generously *but* there will be an expectation that each subsequent analysis will have more substance and depth. There will be some level of penalty for late work and late work without good cause cannot be accepted as it is unfair to others who have completed work on time.

***Special note for evaluation of panels: A copy of your slides for me to note as you present is helpful. Print the feedback form provided on course documents and attach a list of your sources to bring when you present. In most cases, I can then provide you with your panel-presentation grade at the end of class. You will each be graded individually, but your panel should reflect the management of a group endeavor.

***Special note for tracking your progress: Keep returned assignments to make use of feedback and to track your grades. It is your responsibility to note grades for each assignment so that you never need to ask “what am I missing?” or “where do I stand?”

***Special note for NYT responses:

In each set of NYT/PBS segment responses, you should include at least one article from the NYT Sunday Review section. A set of responses should include articles from different sections.

For these responses, in lieu of letter grades, you will find this kind of response:

FC+--full-credit plus. You’ve read carefully and responded thoughtfully without summarizing
FC—full credit. You’ve read articles but have not done enough of a brief analysis
C—You’ve read articles but responses don’t indicate much thought
