Subject: MarketWatch Project

Our task for this project was to play a virtual stock market game on www.marketwatch.com. We had to read market related news and then buy and sell stocks of NASDAQ based on that news. I started playing from the 9th February till the game ended on 21st April. At the end of the game, my ranking was 11th out of 24 players and I had made a profit of $5401.48 at the end. I had actively taken part in this game, playing most days of the week when possible. I have learnt that stock prices do follow a random walk like we learnt from this course and that any new information that affects the stock prices has immediate effect on the price. I have attached my transaction history at the end of this report as even though I was actively playing the game I did not take any screenshots as I did not know we were supposed to do that.

At the beginning, I was buying stocks solely by looking at which one’s price was increasing and not at the reason for it. For this reason I made a lot of bad purchases whose prices fell a bit after I bought them. As a result I suffered some losses. Another mistake I made was holding on to stocks for too long. As I learnt in class, any new information that affects a stock price has an immediate effect and once the new price level has been reached it falls once again. But not knowing that once it falls it might not climb that high again in the near future, I had foolishly held on to some of my most profitable stocks even after their prices fell in hopes that it will rise again. Not only did it not rise again, but some of their prices kept on falling which contributed to more losses.

Another thing that I learnt from class was the concept of short selling. I did not know it was possible to make profits out of falling prices till we learnt about short selling in class. Once I learnt that, I tried to recover some of my losses by short selling the stocks that I had that was making losses. That way, the loss from those stocks got cancelled out by the gain from short selling. But still I did not sell my loss making stocks in the hopes that it’ll rise again and I’ll be able to make a profit. Less than a week before the game ended I decided to sell all my loss making stocks so that my overall gains do not decrease anymore. I feel that I should have taken the decision to sell those stocks earlier and maybe I could have made more profit. But as we learnt in class, people are loss averse and that is exactly why I did not sell them earlier because I did not want to make such losses and thought the prices would increase again. Also, as we learnt in class, I too was affected by endowment effect and refused to believe that the stocks I owned would not increase in value before the end of the game.

At first I bought stocks from well known companies like Google, Nike, Facebook and Apple. Then I started reading the news and bought some very low value stocks like FX Energy Inc which was supposed to make huge profits. And it was doing very well for a few days, but not knowing that I should not hold stocks for very long periods of time when they are doing so well, I held them and eventually my gains transferred into losses. For almost a month I mainly bought stocks and sold only one or two. That was the biggest mistake I made and if I could do things differently that is one thing that I would rectify.

Holding on to stocks did pay off for me as well. I bought 100 shares of Tesla Motors Inc for $205 and at one point my loss for that share was around $2000. A few weeks before the end of the game, Tesla’s share price jumped due to high sales at the first quarter, and I sold them at $209. Even though I did not make too much profit (just $4 per share) but still it was better than selling them when they were down and making a loss of $2000. This was the biggest turn of events for me.

I made the most profit with Netflix’s shares when its value was increased after the company’s results showed that it reached 20 million international subscribers, and surpassed 40 million in the U.S. At first I bought some shares of Netflix and when they started making so much profit, I decided to cut my losses and sold all the other shares I had. With all the money I had left, I bought Netflix shares and from 13th position jumped to the 8th. But at the last moment (just 2 days before the end of game) I slipped down to 11th as I could not play on the last day as I had 2 mid terms the following day.

Still I am satisfied with my overall performance. I have learnt from my mistakes and hopefully, as a result, I will remember them when I invest real money in the market. Playing this game has given me an understanding of how the market works and I have seen firsthand the effects and results of the theories and concepts that we have learnt in this course. I have seen that if an asset has a favorable forecast the prices immediately increase and reach a stable point. Just like we learnt from this course, “a forecast about favorable future performance leads instead to favorable current performance, as market participants all try to get in on the action before price increases”. I have also attached a graph of my daily overall returns below.

From speculation about whether the cooling measures will be eased to predictions of just how much market prices will continue to fall, the topic has dominated conversations of many first-time buyers, upgraders and investors. In 2014, the decline in Singapore’s private residential and HDB resale market, showed no signs of abating. Restrictions on access to mortgage capital because of the Total Debt Servicing Ratio (TDSR) has, to a large degree, influenced the reinforcement of these behavioural patterns and will continue to so – at least for the majority for 2015. And with the government reiterating that they will not relax the existing policies, status quo looks set to place further pressures on the already subdued market. ...Day 1: Had my first day today and it was very interesting. First I had an orientation where we went over general guidelines for interns at Viacom and then we signed some paperwork. Played some icebreaker games and got a crash course in all the entities that Viacom owns such as MTV, MTV2, VH1, Comedy Central, CMT, BET. After I met with JC, one of the research analysts for MTV and I got a tour of where I was working and met fellow employees and met my supervisor Mitchell. I then attended a meeting with the research, programming and creative insight teams where we discussed millennials (people aged 15-30) and their media consumption. We watched clips about certain shows that were going to be aired and whether or not millennials would watch these shows. We also discussed other areas regarding media consumption. Day 2: I arrived early to work to start learning. The more the better in my opinion. I got acclimated at my desk and started learning the basics. I got a crash course in MTV and ratings since I am in intern in the research and strategic insights department. Then I attended a focus group regarding upcoming MTV events and gave input regarding the specific topics. Got acclimated with startrak, the system in which MTV/MTV 2 pulls ratings. Day 3: got acclimated with startrak even more. Learned some of the more difficult tasks associated with it. I learned how to pull the ratings for MTV and checked ratings that my supervisors JC, Cara, and Mitchell create. Basically its just...

Apple's Future

...9 -7 1 6 -4 0 1 JUNE 25, 2015 DAVID B. YOFFIE ERIC BALDWIN Apple’s Future: Apple Watch, Apple TV, and/or Apple Car? Since the release of the iPod in 2001, Apple had been probably the most successful technology company in the world. It revolutionized three businesses in the next 10 years: music, smartphones, and tablets. When Steve Jobs died in 2011, it was up to his successor, Tim Cook, to revolutionize the next set of industries. In 2015, Cook appeared to have three potential targets: watches (wearables), television, and cars. All three were bets on highly uncertain futures. Watches were off to a promising start in their first quarter of shipments, but it was far too early to declare victory. Television seemed ripe for disruption, but many firms had tried and failed to change the TV landscape. And cars, of course, represented the biggest opportunity as well as the biggest leap for Apple. Financially, Tim Cook and his team were unconstrained: Apple was the most profitable company on the planet in the fourth quarter of 2014, generating $18 billion in net income (Exhibit 1). However, Steve Jobs had famously said that Apple’s success came “from saying no to 1,000 things to make sure we don’t get on the wrong track or try to do too much. We’re always thinking about new markets we could enter, but it’s only by saying no that you can concentrate on the things that are really important.”1 The big questions for Tim Cook and his team included: Were watches, TVs,...
