...Vigilantes in Modern Cinema: Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver The focus of this paper will be the vague distinctions presented between the criminal and the vigilante through an examination and comparison of the films Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver. The inquiry will be concentrated on a character analysis of the Dirty Harry's protagonist, Harry Callahan, antagonist, Scorpio, and Taxi Driver's (anti)hero Travis Bickle. These three characters will be reviewed in their relationship to violence, justice, and purpose. To start, I must admit that the film Dirty Harry struck me as terribly unrealistic. Harry Callahan and Scorpio appeared so absurd simply because they were so incredibly unambiguous, a quality that made the film smack of propaganda. The production crew of Dirty Harry did almost all the thinking for the viewer. At no point in the film would any rational viewer have condoned the actions of Scorpio or condemned Dirty Harry for doing his utmost to stop this incredibly perverse criminal. This was an exceedingly underhanded ploy that exploited the viewer's sense of righteous indignation by concocting exceptional situations where any abuse of jurisprudence could be easily pardoned by the spectator. After recognizing the very obvious fact that Scorpio is the archetypal “bad-guy” one cannot help but notice his doubtful persona. First he kills a woman swimming on a roof-top pool, why? Perhaps she was wealthy, he was making a political statement. Only Harry discovers his note...

...Bryan Morales October 21, 2013 Joseph Mallord William Turner/Sheerness as Seen from the Nore/1808/Oil on canvas/MFAH In the work of art Turner uses atmospheric perspective in the sun to show the depth of the sea. He also has what seems as a city in the background to show that it is an active place full of sailors. Behind the city there are some mountains to give it even more depth. Also, there are many other small boats that are used for layering. This is another element used to convey depth. The sun plays a big role in this work. The sun is the guide to our eye. As we look at the boat our eye starts moving to the right just like the sun rays that are given off by the sun. The sun makes the boat stand out by making it the only thing that is being illuminated by it. The waves give the work of art a sense of movement. They all have different shapes to make the waves seem like they’re moving. He also paints some of them with white detail to show where the waves are striking the boats. On the boats we see some people that look terrified, as if a storm is coming their way. The clouds have minor cross hatching where the color change is occurring. It changes from light clouds to dark ones. Overall it’s a great work of art. For me it creates a nice and chilly...

...Both artists, Samuel Palmer and William Blake were two artists that were truly ahead of their time period. Both artists style was so advance for their time they did not fit into their art historical category during their era. Samuel Palmer was born in Surrey Square, St. Mary’s, and Newington. When Palmer was a child he was very frail and required a nurse growing up. Mary Ward would be his nurse to aid young Palmer, and also contributed to the development of his mind, and implanting the love of poetry in him at a young age. Palmer father’s trade was a big factor into Palmer’s intellectual development. The books the father was trading constantly changing, and Palmer’s reading skill was improving greatly and taking in everything he was learning from the various books. He read books like fiction, travel, religion, and poetry. His dad also taught him English, and had intellectual discussion on all type of subjects while walking in the neighbouring countryside. His mother encouraged Palmer copy architectural and botanical drawings and prints of easel paintings and frescoes during his younger years. But Palmer felt copying these skills was not his calling and he preferring authorship. After the death of Palmer’s mother, a minor artist had played an important role in Palmer’s life. That artist name was William Wate that had landscapist ability that cause people to make them interested in his work. Wate happened to have extremes passion for Romantic aesthetic, and also showed...

...The number of semi-automatic pistols produced in the United States in 2010 was 1,868,258. The number of revolvers produced was 547,195. In 2011, Michigan sold 2,453 semi-automatic pistols and 1,039 revolvers. With the sale numbers more than 2 to 1 in most states you would think that the wise choice for the consumer would be semi-automatic pistols. I believe this is not true and for most people, they are making a bad choice in pistols. The facts show that revolvers are a far more superior pistol than a semi-auto because they are far more dependable, accurate, and powerful. Whether you are hunting dangerous game or using a pistol for personal protection. A revolver will never fail to fire unless it is unloaded or all the ammo has been fired. On the other hand, all semi-automatic pistols jam and fail to fire, regardless of manufacturer or the highest of quality. There are numerous mechanical levers and springs that all have to be timed properly and all have to work just right for a semi-auto to fire. With all these mechanical devises moving at a very rapid speed every single time a semi-auto is fired there is also a lot of wear happening. For example the 20lb. recoil spring or any spring for that matter when compressed and/or stretched hundreds or thousands of times at an extremely fast speed lose their strength. Worn out parts equals’ failure. People I know that shoot their semi-automatic pistols a lot replace many parts every year such as the recoil spring attempting...

...A brief history of photo journalism Created on: May 28, 2008 Last Updated: August 06, 2008 "A picture is worth a thousand words" should be the motto of the photojournalist. It certainly is what they are all about. Who can ever forget some of the most memorable photos of the 20th century? It was the photo journalist who brought us the horror of the holocaust, the joy of the sailor who returned home and the faces of the world. We have been a part of history through the eyes of a camera lens. Photo-journalism is almost as old as the camera itself. The first photo journalist was Carol Szathmari who did documentary photos of the Crimean War in the 1850's. It was Matthew Brady who really should have the title of Greatest photojournalist of the 19th century. His photos of the Civil War were made into engravings and published in Harpers Weekly. They are no less poignant today than they were when he took them over 150 years ago.He brought to life the main players in the Civil War. If it wasn't for him we would not have seen the care worn face of Abraham Lincoln or the meeting of the great generals. It took until the 1880's for photographs to be published in newspapers. The invention of the flash powder allowed photography to go indoors added a whole new dimension to the ability of the photojournalist to tell his story with pictures. It wasn't until the flash bulb was invented along with the 35mm camera that photojournalism really took off. The period between the 1930's and the 1950's...

Page 1 of 5 Return to article page This story was printed from LookSmart's FindArticles where you can search and read 3.5 million articles from over 700 publications. http://www.findarticles.com Loaded... ready... safe! Can your home-defense gun be loaded and quickly accessible, yet still be safe? Our handgun editor says "Yes!" and offers several proven strategies. Guns Magazine , Jan 1, 2002, by Massad Ayoob If you keep a gun in your home or workplace, it's only common sense that it be loaded and quickly accessible. The same common sense, however, also tells us the firearm should be inaccessible to children, incompetent adults and unlawful intruders. Having both at once is a tall order, but that doesn't make it impossible. Let's look at a broad spectrum of armed citizens and police officers in this country who have found that when it comes to this important matter -- you can have your cake and eat it too. In The Home John is a detective and gunfight winner who works for a large, West Coast jaw-enforcement agency that serves a very high-crime community. He has investigated a number of violent home invasions, many of which had tragically fatal results. Though most of these were "drug dealer invading and ripping off rival dealer" situations, a disturbing number involved innocent, law-abiding citizens who were helpless once their doors were kicked in. When John gets dressed for work in the...

...Machine Versus Art Ever since our ancestor chimpanzees started to take advantage of “spear-like weapon” (Choi) and unconsciously began to evolve into a different species, the tool has been changing out lifestyle and social structure all the time. With the development of human intelligence, the tool became more and more complicated and human-friendly, and after the industrial revolution, machines officially became a big part of civilization. Among all kinds of high-tech machines, things like cameras and recording machines created huge effect on artwork. In my essay, I plan to show that although mechanical reproduction can lead to the loss of originality of the artwork, reproduction can be considered as a trade off for multiplicity of shared experience. Long time after Benjamin’s essay was published, Stan Link’s “The Work of Reproduction in the Mechanical Aging of an Art: Listening to Noise” supports his idea of how reproduction can have impact on the audiences, except paintings or movies, from a new aspect: music pieces. The truth is, just as what Link writes in his article, the recording of a music piece or any other kind of sound materials will certainly create tiny differences during the process no matter how strict the condition might be, and the audience will certainly feel different due to the change of surroundings. For instance, if a person went to Lang Lang’s Spring Dance in the concert instead of listening to the same piece on YouTube, he/she is more likely to be...

...To eke out a living, an artist must sell his or her work. Even seasoned artists have to figure out ways to make more money. It’s a very competitive world where new talent springs up everyday. The price of an original work is not accessible to the working class. For this reason, an artist must contemplate on having reproductions of sellable art. This option is not for everyone, but it is a good way to earn one’s living. Reproducing works of art Artists can print what they need and sell limited edition giclee reproductions for a competitive price. Giclee reproductions are the outcomes of high-quality printing methods. If you are an artist in a highly competitive niche, you must study the market first, Cie-Elle Digital Imaging suggests.
