Through the years, children in general have changed such as, kids have lost their sense of confidence and self-esteem due to bullying. These children are crying out for help in a huge way. Perhaps as a result of families needing two incomes to survive has led to the depression and lack of guidance that is needed to nurture our children today. This is why Martial Arts instruction in school may increase confidence, self-esteem and decrease bullying in schools.
Parents often have the false impression that martial arts will lead to their child learning violence, when in fact, the increase in confidence that martial arts brings is one of its perks. Kids will have the confidence along with the skills to be able to achieve higher levels in any art or physical activity. Kids can apply that same amount of confidence to other aspects of their life. For example, it allows the student to really focus on the issue at hand. Another benefit about martial arts is the confidence for socialization with peers, instructors and adults. Martial arts show the student to treat everyone with respect and to carry themselves with honor.
During the course of my research, I found that, it’s rare to find a martial art that even mentions why, where and how violence happens. (Whether it's individual self-defense, a domestic violence situation, or war, a practitioner needs to understand what they're up against to effectively learn to defend against it. Prevention strategies can and should account for most self-defense. They're nonexistent in most martial art training.), (Functional self-defense .org, 2014.) As the saying goes; “There are no bad students only bad teachers.” The Karate Kid (1984). I agree with only the fact that in order to defend effectively, you must learn to understand what you’re up against. (Rocky 3 1982).
As was mentioned confidence can and does apply to many aspects of life. During the research that I was doing I came across a story about a young lady that was in a relationship that was abusive. All her life Connie Saulner was active in sports and had some training in martial arts. She knew how to defend herself but this type of abuse can happen to anyone. As a result of the domestic violence this young lady will never walk again. She now spends her time before students talking about domestic violence. The martial arts training assisted in giving this young lady the confidence she needed and the confidence to move forward with her life, after she encountered this horrible experience. Self-esteem is another result of the martial arts training. The student is taught to respect their body, which consists of exercise, a balanced diet, and meditation. Martial arts burns off excess energy, develops discipline, and increases focus, which in studies have shown to help children with ADHD.(Wendy Miller, 2011). The physical demands of martial arts is high. Pushing one’s self to better themselves physically can apply to all aspects of life minimizing future health risks and increasing confidence.
Martial arts is a physical activity, so it burns energy that one might have built up. The students are taught how to stretch, punch and kick properly which can improve their coordination and flexibility. Most classes meet two to three nights a week which is great exercise. Using martial arts in schools would allow the student access to a 5 day workout routine which would have better effects than Dodge ball. With all of the technology that children have today at home not enough exercise is done which is making our children here in America overweight. Through a balanced diet and the physical results of martial arts this can and would change.
Another facet of martial arts is meditation. Studies have found that regular meditation can lower blood pressure, reduce pain, ease depression, cut anxiety, boost alertness and even make you smarter. In martial arts meditation leads to focus which in turn can lead into confidence. Overconfidence can also hinder the student from reaching their goals and becoming their best. When people are overconfident, they have a false sense of security and sometimes overestimate their abilities. This can be a major problem when things don’t turn out the way we would like them to. The main goal of martial arts is to teach the student how to be self-efficient which by definition is; “An individual’s conviction that he or she can successfully execute the behaviors necessary to produce a desired outcome,” (Weinberg & Gould, 1999). In other words don’t underestimate your opponent.
Being physically fit gives the person a sense of readiness should the situation arise, by allowing the martial arts student to remain calm, think things through in event of being in a bullying scenario. Dealing with the mental as well as the physical torture can be very trying for people, just having the confidence to defend themselves is huge for the building of self-esteem. For example, a student that is being bullied is trained not to fight but to try to resolve the conflict using words rather than fists. If all else fails then the student would have the skills to defend themselves as a last resort.
When focusing on your breathing, you can observe your thoughts and sensations but not attaching any emotion to them will allow you to remain calm in any situation. When this is done your breathing slow will allow your muscles to relax, thus relieving stress on your body. Exercise in general has been known to have several stress reducing effects. Some of the effects are increased blood flow to the brain, released endorphins to elevate mood, and the removal of chemical waste that your body stores. When practicing martial arts, you generally develop a greater focus and calm of mind while training. On the other hand, training yourself to focus, slow your breathing, and calm your mind are common techniques for stress management. No matter which is the initial cause and which is the effect, these two events have an increasing benefit on each other, occurring in your brain at the same time, have a compounding effect on your overall ability to control your stress.
The hardest part of your training is the beginning and after that you will soon be craving it. While you may not notice it immediately, you will start feeling better quickly. After a week or two, you should begin feeling the effects of decreased stress, increased focus and higher energy. As a society violence is never tolerated, but in certain situations it cannot be avoided. With everything that is happening in the world today, and the fact that parents don’t have the time to nurture our children due to being at work, the benefits of martial arts can make a difference. Remember that these children are crying out for help, martial arts is an answer that will provide the guidance that children need today. This is why Martial Arts instruction in school would increase confidence, self-esteem, decrease bullying in schools.
