...Technological Advancements in Communication XCOM/285 October 12, 2012 Technological Advancements in Communication Technology plays a key role in how we conduct business today. It has become necessary for all industries to rely on technology to successfully conduct business, especially collaborative technology. Some of the technological advancements mentioned in the article, Superhero in the cubicle, are Mashup Software and Near-Time. Mashup Software from Kapow Technologies, is software that allows users gather information, regardless of format such as straight text, spreadsheets, Web pages, and RSS feeds, from internal and external sources. It allows the users to combine this information and reuse it in entirely different ways. Mashup software is characterized because of the way it spreads roots all across the Web, enabling it to retrieve information outside its boundaries. According to IBM Developer Works, mashup software is widely used by law enforcement to map crimes to geographical areas, and it is interactive with Google Earth so anyone can view it. This is very helpful for anyone thinking of moving into a particular neighborhood to view crime statistics in the area. Near-Time is a hosted service that can be used to build wikis and blogs, share files, create podcasts, and handle RSS feeds. This software can be used to create tutorials, and to facilitate training, around the country, globe, and in different time zones. It is used by online educational facilities...

...Business types Mash up: Business mashups are useful for integrating business and data services, as business mashups technologies provide the ability to develop new integrated services quickly, to combine internal services with external or personalized information, and to make these services tangible to the business user through user-friendly Web browser interfaces. Business mashups differ from consumer mashups in the level of integration with business computing environments, security and access control features, governance, and the sophistication of the programming tools used. Another difference between business mashups and consumer mashups is a growing trend of using business mashups in commercial software as a service offering. Google Maps is a web mapping service application and technology provided by Google, that powers many map-based services, including the Google Maps website, Google Ride Finder, Google Transit, and maps embedded on third-party websites via the Google Maps API It offers street maps, a route planner for traveling by foot, car, bike (beta), or with public transportation and a locator for urban businesses in numerous countries around the world. ...Web 2.0 According to Wolcott (2012), “Web 2.0 represents an important shift in the way digital information is created, shared, stored, distributed, and manipulated, and it will have a significant impact in the way businesses use both the Internet and enterprise-level IT applications.” These protocols and tools make it easier to create online applications and encourage users to manipulate and interact with content in new ways (Wolcott, 2012). Some specific Web 2.0 information technologies and applications, categories of Web 2.0 sites, and web services and service-oriented architecture are: AJAX, Podcasts and Videocasts, Blog, Mashups, Real Simple Syndication (RSS), Social Media, Tags, Wikis, Aggregators, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Web Services Description Language (WSDL), Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI ), and Extensible Markup Language (XML) (Rainer & Turban, 2009). Key characteristics of Web 2.0 are: Web-based applications can be accessed from anywhere; simple applications solve specific problems; value lies in content, not the software used to display content; data can be readily shared; distribution is bottom-up not top-down; employees and customers can access and use tools on their own; social tools encourage people to create, collaborate, edit, categorize, exchange, and promote information; and network effects are encouraged; the more people who contribute, the better the content gets (Wolcott, 2012). It creates new ways for people...

...The technological advancements in communication that were discussed in this article are smart sheets from smartsheet.com and web 2.0 Mashup by kapok Technolond. Smartsheets are a system that manages your project or business online. These spreadsheets use different designs and layouts to show the data. This data can be shared alongside your co workers where they can find important documents included with the smartsheets or even use your personal or business email to send you notifications. Web 2.0 mash-up is a way we use to think of the future of how diferent apps should be industrialized using things like RSS and java to get the app body and a purpose thru formatting which is catching on so fast because this day and age you do not need a P.H.D. to do this. I could use web2.0 mash-ups in my workplace by putting in an Application programing interface. This will allow people from outside the company to interact with the product of the company true request they (the customer) put in. With me (the maker) able to manage the data like I want the interaction between customer and company are greatly increased at just the tip of the fingers. With smart sheets at the workplace I am able to use my spreadsheets like graphs and tables. I can assign constants to certain columns as well. Smart sheets are the right hand of web 2.0 mash-up and together constantly make technology itself have a hard time keeping up leaving the companies that are not willing to step up their technology far...

...SMash: Secure Component Model for Cross-Domain Mashups on Unmodified Browsers Frederik De Keukelaere, Sumeer Bhola, Michael Steiner, Suresh Chari, Sachiko Yoshihama {eb41704, sachikoy}@jp.ibm.com, {sbhola, msteiner, schari}@us.ibm.com IBM Tokyo Research Laboratory, Kanagawa, Japan; IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, New York, USA ABSTRACT Mashup applications mix and merge content (data and code) from multiple content providers in a user’s browser, to provide high-value web applications that can rival the user experience provided by desktop applications. Current browser security models were not designed to support such applications and they are therefore implemented with insecure workarounds. In this paper, we present a secure component model, where components are provided by different trust domains, and can interact using a communication abstraction that allows ease of specification of a security policy. We have developed an implementation of this model that works currently in all major browsers, and addresses challenges of communication integrity and frame-phishing. An evaluation of the performance of our implementation shows that this approach is not just feasible but also practical. The technology discussed in this paper allows mutually mistrusting client-side components to communicate safely without any modifications to current browsers, and hence has the potential to achieve immediate and widespread adoption.

...the Cubicle," the technological advancements that are discussed are e-mails, voicemail, instant messenger, online or phone chat, text messaging, blog, wiki, mashup, and smartsheet. In the article it explains how many companies are trying new types of technology in order to better the communication. Many of these advancements in technology are not typical forms of communication in business. Text messaging and instant messenger for instance at one point, where considered forms of communication that businesses frowned upon. Many businesses felt that employees were talking to personal friends or family members and it was unacceptable. Smartsheet and mashup are two applications that have been utilized in the advancement of technology for businesses. Both applications are web based tools that combine data from external sources to create a new, easier to read data. Both applications are easy to manage without the help of the information technology department. Smartsheet also allows many people from the organization to add or review the data and help with the decision making process. It also makes translating information to other countries easier because it is only one sheet with information, and allows others to make notes on the same sheet. A big difference between the two applications is the price. Kapow Technologies, mashup software starts at $50,000. Smartsheet.com starts at $25 a month for 100 sheets and goes up to $149 for 1,000 sheets. References: Citrano, V. (2007). Superhero...

...Technological Advancements in Communication Advancement in technological communication listed in the article was collaborative tools. One in which is called the smartsheet. The smartsheet was a place where many companies or parties involved in communicating could add to which each of their ideas and findings. Even if several languages are used. Instead of hundreds of emails being corresponded, each person uses the smartsheet to communicate, sharing data and information. This method of collaborative communication is lower cost as low as $25 each month, compared to other collaborative methods such as the Web 2.o Mashup server software which can cost a company a minimum of $50,000. The Mashup Server software does offer more features where it acts as a one stop shop for research, training, communication, wiki and even instant messaging. I feel that the Mashup Server software would be more beneficial in a workplace because it logs all communication while keeping everyone formal. This form of communication is not traditional and would be hard to get everyone on board. If people are used to corresponding via email and instant messaging, implementing a new program would cause resistance to change. One reason the resistance to the change would arise would be because the difficulty of merging the new software with other operating software programs already in place or the level of difficulty in learning the new system. The reason it is not traditional is because it is newer than emailing...

...Case Study 3 Case Study 3 Video Case Mashup-Driven Dashboards and Reporting The most valuable resource of any firm is the people. Without doubt, any company attaches much of money in real estate, inventory, technology among others, but the people are more important than any other of these resources (InetSoft Technology Corp, 2015). It is the people who come up with suggestions and decisions that drive the business. The dashboard empowers decision makers as it gives them timely access to the best possible information that they can use in decision-making (InetSoft Technology Corp, 2015). The dashboard provides a robust infrastructure, analysis services and powerful integration, and intuitive and familiar interface that empower decision makers of any firm (InetSoft Technology Corp, 2015). Giving decision makers access to the right information will equip them better to make the right decisions. The dashboard allows decision makers to conduct comparative analysis during the decision-making process. The features of the mashup include data from various sources and web applications. The mashup provides real-time integrated view of the organization. These include data on revenues, salaries for each employee, and information on employee safety. The dashboard also incorporates key performance indicators in more understandable features. It also integrates chats that make information more usable. Data virtualization is also used to enable decision makers meet long-term and short-term business...

...good at sifting through (and/or aggregating) huge volumes of data and turning it into information.” (Ibid.). (Turban 2013, p. 345) concurs, “BI systems are very good at filtering and aggregating huge data volumes into information.” With a business intelligence system, it is possible to summarize sales data for a region and assess the impact of a marketing campaign by product or by geographical area and present the same to users “on mashups.” (searchbusinessanalytics.techtarget.com/). The mention of mashups leads us to the issue of “business intelligence” systems “for the masses” on mobile devices (Turban 2013, p.349). Thus, with mobile and BI technologies respectively and concurrently, “mobile dashboards” have eased and popularized the implementation of “mobile intelligence.” (Ibid.). Today we have what would be called, “Mobile dashboard-supplied [business] intelligence” whereby data and information are accessible online, real-time, anywhere (Turban 249-350). With todays “visualization technologies…like “business dashboards, enterprise mashups, interactive reporting tools, and visualization apps for mobiles… data from business intelligence (BI) systems, data warehouses, and other internal and external data stores [can be depicted] … in meaningful graphics with drill-down capabilities” (Ibid., p. 334). Such tools assist managers to make decisions quickly, answer to queries spontaneously on the sport and cut costs as well (Ibid.). User-interactivity through data integration...

...The Kollection: From Music Hobby to Startup and Beyond 1. How did Lovin come to recognize the opportunity for his young venture? Of the three types of start-ups mentioned in Chapter 3, which one does The Kollection fit into? What was the source of this opportunity? Lovin saw an opportunity in the market to share music “mashup”. There were already many different online music blogs, but they really lacked design and speed. He saw the opportunity to create a well-organized, visually appealing, and efficient website. The advantage that Lovin had on the other online music blogs was that he had web design experience. Unlike the blogs that were run by other high school or college students, he knew how to improve search results and increase traffic. The Kollection fit into the “new benefit” start-up. The idea of the business wasn’t really new, but he offered a better version of what was previously offered. Since online music was really just starting to expand, he jumped on the opportunity to be part of it. However, unlike his competitors, he delivered it in a well designed and well organized way. There were a few sources that really contributed to why The Kollection was better than other online blogs: the website benefited from Lovin’s web design experience, the free and fast downloading was available through Soundcloud, and the collection of music articles that was available from the authors working for Lovin. 2. Complete a SWOT analysis for The Kollection...

...This document has some claims and a related report and journal article, Use it if you are stuck for ideas on the literature review.. Some claims about cheating you can either agree or disagree Claim 1 one reason why you should give students an assignment about cheating is that gives students an example of how government agencies place demands on a business. The fact that many students that blatantly cheat and get 0 but still argue say their mark needs to be changed clearly do not understand this. Claim 2 It is difficult to do a proper literature review, they are not experts and they are not used to how academics describe the problem, However they do get a benefit from looking at actual journal articles and seeing how they discuss a specific problem and review the literature. If a student cheats by getting an essay from a website that makes fake essays they will not actually learn anything. Sections on a government report related to the claims about cheating For your literature review you have to refer to a government report on cheating “Report on Student Academic Integrity and Allegations of Contract Cheating by University Students” http://www.teqsa.gov.au/sites/default/files/publication-documents/ReportOnAllegationsOfStudentMisconduct.pdf The following statements are relevant to claim 1 and claim 2 “Contract cheating – the purchase of another person’s work to present as your own – has a long history. Recently, the ready availability of sophisticated...
