...go, the mise-en-scène is the result of the collaboration of many professionals. Thus in the production environment, the director is more specific with his requests and orders. Is he trying to talk to the prop master, the set designer, the actors, the make-up artists? All of them are part of different departments. But all of them, in the end, have influence in the mise-en-scène. In the academic realm, the term mise-en-scène is always invoked when the overall look and feel of a movie is under discussion. Students taking Film Analysis should be quite familiar with the term. Even though many professionals are involved in its creation, the director is the one that oversees the entire mise-en-scène and all of its elements. Not just that, but during the early stages of pre-production, the director or his AD sits down with set designers, prop masters, location managers, costume designers, and scenic artists to determine the look and feel intended. In some instances, the mise-en- scène is used to evoke lasting feelings throughout the movie and not just for selected scenes. In the German expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), distorted shapes and claustrophobic scenery is implemented to disturb the audience and enhance the horror. Mike Nichols’ The Graduate (1967) has been praised by its amazing, exciting, and multi-layered visual...

...The Graduate – 1st person narrative My name is Benjamin and I’ve just graduated as a teacher. Now I’m home, and I’m waiting for a party. It is because that my parents are proud of me because I’m now able to become a teacher. Actually, I didn’t enjoy the party at all. I had so many things on my mind that I didn’t care about all the guests. I know that they just wanted to congratulate me, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I could. You see, now when I’m done with my graduation my life and mind has become very trivial. The days look like each other, and I don’t know what to do anymore, so I have to think about it. I have to think a lot..about everything. I went up to my room to think, but someone suddenly came in of the door. My father had a business partner and it was his wife, Mrs. Robinson, who was there. She wanted me to follow her home, and I felt like i had to do it because she wasn’t sober..at all! I drove her home. As soon as we arrived at her house I wanted to go back home, but she had other plans. She tried to seduce me. She even got bare naked and let me see her. She told me that she was avoidable for me, but I just wanted to go home so I did so. However, after travelling a lot I wanted to see her and have sex with her. So I arranged a meeting with her in a hotel. But because of that I only got problems because I felt in love with Mrs. Robinson’s daughter, Elaine. And I don’t know how to make her mine; because I’ve had sex with her...

...The Graduate The Graduate is 1967 film that was based on a 1963 novel, The Graduate. I have viewed both the screenplay and the trailer of this film. The trailer took important scenes and presented them in such ways that could actually change the plot of the movie in some ways. The trailer combined so many key shots of the film that gives you just enough to engage you emotionally and spark your curiosity. As the trailer begins you immediately hear an asynchronous sound (Sikov, 79) of background music. The song playing is The song of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel (wikipedia.com). The trailer opens up with a long shot of a young man sitting outside in front of a fountain and there’s a flag waving right above him. The camera then cuts to an extreme long high shot to capture the entire landscape of the university and students walking around the campus behind the young man. The next few shots are various close-up shots complied together that shows several people coming up to Ben rubbing his head and hugging him congratulating him on his graduation. You hear a one lady ask him “what are you going to do now?” And his reply was “I was going to go upstairs for a minute”. This showed that he was definitely clueless that the question pertained to his future career. In the first thirty seconds of the trailer you are already aware that the movie is based on a guy named Ben who just graduated college and with only a few spoken words you can derive to the conclusion that he is undecided...

...Graduation Speech It has been a long four years, but here we are, ready to graduate. We worked hard to get to this point, but we did not do it by ourselves. We owe a huge debt of appreciation to our teachers for sharing your talent, knowledge, and time with us. We know it was your job to do it, but you made sure we stayed focused, and reached our goals. You took time to explain assignments, and allowed us to come to your classroom after school for extra help when you could have gone home to spend time with your family. You put in effort to make lessons more interesting so we would not tune out. You demanded excellence from us whether or not we wanted to give it. To our parents, thank you for supporting us in more ways than it is possible to count. You dragged us out of bed each morning, made sure we were fed and clothed for school. You made sure we was out the door on the bus stop on time, or drove us to school yourselves. You helped us with homework, paid our class fees, and listened to our complaints. You commiserated over our daily dramas, but you tried to give us enough space to learn how to work things out for ourselves. To our custodial staff and lunchroom attendants, thank you for keeping our school clean and safe. To our principal, vice principal and all the office staff, thank you for keeping things running smoothly so our teachers could concentrate on us. To our guidance counselors, thank you for listening and trying to keep us on the right track for graduation...

...Mike Nichol’s “The Graduate” A Real Graduate In Mike Nichol’s, “The Graduate” Ben (a shy, antisocial, college graduate) who attended school on the east coast for four years -more than likely to get away from his parents- returns home to his family and a life full of high expectations, confusion, and a love triangle. Most parents who want their children to be successful, ideally, would not want to have full control over their child’s career path. Unfortunately, this is not the case for Ben. The day he came home his parents threw him a graduation party -considering none of his real friends were invited- that was really for Mr. Braddock’s (Ben’s father) friends and business partners to associate. Though, the average 20 year old would be thrilled to receive a car for graduating college (or on any occasion for that matter). When Ben’s parents surprised him with an Alfa Romeo or as his dad’s guests might say “A wop-job” he didn’t seem too excited. After he became irritated with all the bogus compliments about graduating college, he raced up to his room to escape the madness. Thinking he was alone, Mrs. Robinson (one of Mr. Braddock’s business partners) walked into Ben’s room intentionally and exclaimed, “Oh I’m sorry, I thought this was the bathroom.” Afraid of her impeccable presence and his lack of experience with a woman, Ben becomes extremely nervous as she bluntly invited herself to sit on his bed. But her demanding tone of voice and her promiscuous personality was just the first...

...The Graduate Scene Analysis/Review Like literature, film is full of areas which can have deeper meaning than the actions occurring at the moment in the story. The magic of film however is that these actions can be visibly seen and can do this not only with the script but with camera angles, music, sounds, lighting and many other factors that would have to be imagined in a novel. One film that clearly uses this to its advantage is Mike Nichols “The Graduate” which is centered on Benjamin, a young man who finds himself in a love-based dilemma with a woman and her daughter. The film nearly abuses these techniques to create a masterpiece with both a meaningful and enthralling story. One scene that stands out from the rest in the movie is in a montage where Benjamin finds himself drifting in water and making the beast with two backs with the older woman. However, this montage comes to an abrupt stop when Benjamin hears his father’s voice calling to him in a rather upset tone. There is then a cut to a close up on the fathers face, blocking out the sun and giving him a darker more authoritative appearance. This creates the illusion that Benjamin’s father represents the strictness of reality compared to Benjamin’s drifting. And as the upset father talks to Benjamin about the life that he is wasting it becomes apparent that Benjamin’s laid back appearance lacks control when compared to that his father. Another noteworthy scene is after Benjamin buys gifts for Elaine, whose family...

The questions are also created after doing research on finding out the problems or issue that are currently the most prominent when talking about unemployment so that the information gained from the survey would be of great help to access the main problem. The survey is conducted in a shopping mall, specifically in Sunway Pyramid, where a wider scope of audience can be reached. The surveys were then handed out to 10 random people that have graduated or are going to graduate from their higher education. This methodology is very reliable as it is made sure that the people who had completed this survey only consists of graduates or people that are in their final year in university and are going to face this situation of unemployment very soon, showing a result that is more 'true' to the current situation. Also, as different types of questions were used for different questions, a greater accuracy of the public's opinion could be obtained. Lastly, the survey questions were created after doing tons of research so that the biggest problem in this issue could be addressed within the questions that the people...

...There are quite a few great movies that came out in the 1960’s, The Great Escape, Bullitt, and A Fistful of Dollars. Another exceptional movie of the 60’s was the movie The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman. The movie embodies the issues that were part of the 60’s and the conflicts that were faced during that period in time. There was a lot of exploration of how people could be their own individual and express themselves as individuals. I am going to discuss the plot and the story of the movie. I want to discuss what makes this movie special and memorable for the audience such as the acting and camera techniques used. Also talk about the soundtrack that was used for the film and what made the soundtrack special. Overall, I want to discuss all the aspects that made this movie one the best movies in history. The Graduate stars Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock, a recent college student who just graduated. He returns home to be greeted by his parents and they want to throw him a welcome home party to congratulate him for his hard work. During the party all the relatives and neighbors ask him what his plans are but he tries to get away upstairs. Upstairs he finds Mrs. Robinson sitting in a couch drunk and offers to take her back home. When they arrive at her house she starts flirting with Benjamin but rejects her at first. He decides to go ahead with the affair but later realizes there is nothing between them so he wants to break the affair off. The next day his mother...

...dfdfdd kjkj df The 1967 film by Mike Nicoles “The Graduate” is about Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate, who is at a crossroads in his life. He is caught between adolescence and adulthood searching for the meaning of his upper middle class suburban world of his parents. He then began a sexual relationship with the wife of his father’s business partner, Mrs. Robinson. Uncomfortable with his sexuality, Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson continue an affair during which she asked him to stay away from her daughter, Elaine. Things became complicated when Benjamin was pushed to go out with Elaine and he falls in love with her. Benjamin follows her to school determined not to let her get away and ultimately disrupted her wedding. In the end, Elaine runs off with Benjamin uncertain about her pre-determined destination. “The Graduate” cannot possibly begin to unravel the several very complex themes that run throughout the film. The coming of age story as the film attempted to relay a message of innocent being push in an unwanted direction through a society filled with expectations. It focuses on the development and the maturing of the young college graduate and his journey from child to adult as well as sex and relationship. It captures what it is to be young, restless, skeptical and confused. It is reflective of a time when...

...Overall, Residual Dreams is a well produced and well acted short film, with several strong aspects that make it stand out in the world of student films. These aspects primarily include locations and acting. However, some aspects, primarily choreography and, at times, acting, revealed it to be a less than professional endeavor . By far this film’s strongest aspect was its locations. The gallery space at the beginning is beautiful. It is light and airy, a perfect contrast to the break up that occurs within it. The bar location was also wonderfully selected. It was spacious and visually interesting for a scene with fairly simple camera work. My favorite location was definitely the abandoned lot or construction space (I could not quite tell which it is). It is visually striking and the perfect location for a fight scene. I also enjoyed the golf course location, especially the use of ambient sound. It made the space feel alive, which is something that student films struggle to do well. The combination of sound design and locations, really helped in the world-building of this film. It established the middle-class mid-sized city, quickly and efficiently and they did so without showing an discernable Ann Arbor landmarks, which student films so often do. The acting in this film also had its strong points. I really enjoyed Melissa’s response to Jake’s criticism in the first scene. He was a spacey jerk and she acted genuinely hurt. I just wish that Jake had put on such a good performance...

...Henrico Country, Virginia, occurred” (Aptheker 219). The book Black Thunder: Gabriel’s Revolt written by Arna Bontemps is a historical novel that takes place in Virginia in 1800. It shows what the slaves at this time were experiencing and it is in their point of view, rather than the view from the slave masters, like many other novels are. The title, Black Thunder, has a double meaning to it. The very literal meaning of it is a night thunderstorm. The thunderstorm is a climactic turning point in the novel. It is what causes the rivers to flood and the slaves to bail on the revolt. They see the storm as a bad sign and do not want to move onward. The other meaning of the title is the sound of African drums. The titles of the five books, “Jacobins”, “Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet”, “Mad Dogs”, “A Breathing Of The Common Wind”, and “Pale Evening…A Tall Slim Tree”, in the novel are also very significant. For example, Jacobins, which is the title of book one, were French men who were members of a radical political group who supported an egalitarian democracy. This first book involves many judgments, so I feel it is an appropriate title. The third book refers to what the masters and white people of power saw the slaves as, mad dogs. The last book title has to do with execution and this is the chapter where Gabriel and other slaves get hung. There are many important characters in this novel, but a few particularly stand out, Gabriel, Bundy, and Old Ben. Bundy and Old Ben could...

...Gee Summary In this work written by James Paul Gee, explaining that you as an individual are more subject to gaining discourse from primary discourse (parents, siblings, family), and reinforced by secondary discourse (social goods such as money, prestige, power.) Gee states that "language" can be a term that is misleading because it often suggests that it refers to "grammar" However, language and grammar are two different things. Language is written words whereas grammar is seen as fixing the written words to make the work flow better. The central terms to the text are primary and secondary discourses. Primary discourse are being a member of a primary socializing group (family, clan, peer group). Secondary discourses are the mastery of a particular discourse at a certain place and time, bringing with it the acquisition of "social goods"( Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics, By James Paul Gee). The reason these themes are so important is that a primary discourse is one in which you learn from individuals that are close to you. After, you have mastered the primary discourse you take what you learned from primary discourse, then through further mastery from other individuals you begin to construct the world around you. Once you have mastered secondary discourse you are able to compete for money power, and prestige. The first concept of the text is that primary and secondary discourses are necessary for an individual to be able to compete in society. After, mastering these skills...
