Math 221, Discrete Structures Do Exercise 12.9. In your induction case, you should start with (n + 1)2 and use the result from Exercise 12.8. Do Exercise 12.10. i is divisible by 3 means that i = 3k for some integer k. You may use the fact that the sum of two expressions, each one divisible by 3, is also divisible by 3. 1 Assignment 2 1. 2. 3. 4. Study Section 12.5. Do Exercise 12.5. Do Exercise 12.14. Math 221, Discrete Structures Prove (12.16.1). There are two base cases, one for n = 1 and one for n = 2. For the induction case, there are two inductive hypotheses–one with n − 1 and one with n. You can assume both of them to prove the case for n + 1. Start with the RHS, use (12.14), then the inductive hypotheses. Prove (12.35a). The base case is n = 1. Prove (12.35b). The base case is n = 1. 5. 6. 1 Assignment 3 1. 2. Study Section 10.1. Math 221, Discrete Structures Do Exercise 10.1(a, b, c, d, e, g). ...1 Teenagers’ Reasons for Listening to Music and the Students’ Perception of the Effects of Listening When Completing School Assignments1 Jennifer Adriano Educational Leadership Doctoral Program Thomas DiPaola Educational Leadership Doctoral Program Center for Research and Evaluation The Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School Johnson & Wales University 1 Paper presented at the 42nd annual meeting of the New England Educational Research Organization, April, 2010, Portsmouth, NH. 2 Introduction Music is a significant part of our lives. People listen to music on the radio at home and in their car; they watch music videos on television or hand held technology; they buy CDs or download music; and they attend concerts. People also hear music in stores, restaurants, sporting events, and doctors’ offices (Schellenberg, Peretz, & Vieillard, 2008). Music is very important to many adolescents and they spend a considerable amount of their time listening to music. One study with N = 2,465 adolescents ages 13 and 14 found that participants listened to music for an average of 2.45 hours per day (North, Hargreaves, & O’Neill, 2000). Music has become a personal accompaniment in many teenagers’ lives because of the availability and popularity of personal music listening devices. In 2009, Jaffray released the results from the 18th semi-annual survey, “taking stock with teens.” The team of researchers surveyed approximately N = 1,200 students, with an average age of 16.3, in...

...Week 4 Individual Assignment Erwin O. Raymer III PSY/315 Jan. 13th 2014 Jennifer Lapin Week 4 Individual Assignment The five steps of hypothesis testing consist of the following. Restate the question as a research hypothesis and a null hypothesis. This is where an individual would make a research hypothesis, which is basically a prediction intended to be tested in a research study. This prediction is usually based on the researcher’s theory. A null hypothesis is the opposite of the research hypothesis. If the null hypothesis is found to be true then it is not possible for the research hypothesis to be relevant. Same goes for if the research hypothesis is true then the null hypothesis is unable to be relevant as well. Determine the characteristics of the comparison distribution. In the hypothesis testing process you want to find out the probability that you could have a sample score as extreme as what you got if your sample was from a population with a distribution of the sort you would have if the null hypothesis were true. That is in the hypothesis testing process, you compare the actual samples score to this comparison distribution. Determine the cut off sample score on the comparison distribution at which the null hypothesis should be rejected. (Critical value) Ideally, before conducting a study, researchers set a target against which they will compare their results. How extreme a sample score they would need to decide against...

...Research Design (Assignment 2) I will be conducting a study using a true experimental research design in order to investigate the effects of marijuana use on an individual’s problem solving ability. Marijuana use is the independent variable which is operationally defined as consumption in the form of smoking 0.5 grams of cannabis in a marijuana cigarette. Problem solving abilities is the dependent variable which is operationally defined as the total score on various math problems as well as time taken to complete said math problems. Scores on the math test can range from 0 to 100. 40 participants, 20 males and 20 females all of whom are 18 year old Freshmen taking Math 131 at Pasadena City College, will be utilized in this study. 10 males and 10 females will be randomly assigned to group A and will all smoke marijuana, while 10 males and 10 females will be randomly assigned to group B and will not smoke marijuana. In order to ensure that every participant in group A is affected by the marijuana equally, only students that consent to a drug test prior to the study and are found to have no traces of THC present in their blood will be eligible to participate in the study. This will ensure that all participants in group A are affected by marijuana equally by eliminating the possibility of one participant having a higher tolerance than another. In order to eliminate all possible plausible alternative explanations for the relationship observed between marijuana use and problem solving...
