Mausolus of Caria ruled the Persian kingdom of Caria for twenty-four years. In 353 B.C., he died, leaving his wife and sister, Queen Artemisia, to rule the land. She was devastated about his death. She then decided that a tomb must be built for him, as a tribute to his honor. The other reason it was built was to reflect on how wealthy she was, she didn’t worry about how much she would be spending. Unfortunately, she never got to see it completed, because she died two years after Mausolus died. However, her body was buried with his in the uncompleted tomb.
