In my experiencing religion I had the honor of going to the Maypole festival that was hosted in Las Cruces. This in conjunction not knowing little to anything about what was going on through everything would be explained to me as the ritual would go on. When first arriving at the Unitarian Universalist Church. I did notice that it was split into two different buildings and it did take me sometime in finding which building I had to go to. But to my surprise the building was something that I was not expecting. A newer building compared to the church that was next door. I was greeted and was then told that they were going to begin but were still waiting for some people to show up. In addition a guest minister was there to observe the ritual and he personally welcomed me. Standing outside of the church they had to thank the directions of the East, South, West, and North. The following is stated for each of the directions it is noted that each direction is different. I was then told that this tradition and ritual of the Maypole comes from Eastern Europe and is an old ritual that represents the end of spring and the coming of summer. Going back to when I first walked in It was odd as the men thought in relax attire it was the women who were in sun dresses though it was clear that there wasn’t a clear dress code of any type. This relaxed environment would only it make it more welcoming to outsiders. This would make sense after being told what the ritual meant to them. I was then welcomed by everyone and they would say that they were happy someone came down from UTEP.
