...JOURNEY TO SEPA ISLAND By Clarissa budiman 11.1/6 Journey is enlightenment in its highest form. Each and every culture, no matter how remote, stands for an immeasurable of experience. Learning a new language or a new culture is a part of journey since both are new experiences. There are stages where adapting to a whole new environment feels so difficult. Anxiety, confusion or even anger might be overwhelming and so we might stop in the middle of it. Journey includes of both the physical place a person travels to and the emotions that wander with them. My journey to Sepa Island on 3rd of August would be a great example of how a journey can be on two different levels. When I first arrived on Sepa, the scenic view was already made a huge difference on what’s in Jakarta. People there talking in different timbre and their looks were also a bit different. They prefer to say ‘teh’, which means I in English, and ‘saya’ in Jakarta. The price of foods and drinks at Sepa Island were also surprised me, since they set the price much higher than in Jakarta. For example would be, the price of fried potatoes that I ordered for pleasure on my free time cost seventy one thousand and five hundred rupiah, which is three-times more expensive than the fried potatoes that I ordered in Jakarta. From my experience in Sepa, I realized, that as emotionally, it’s really hard to overcome the ‘language barrier’, and to adapt to the culture that is in Sepa. In addition, it’s also hard...

...The short story, “Rocking-Horse Winner”, and the movie based on it contrast considerably. When the written story has ended the movie continues with ideas, which may not come from the author. Three major differences of the two are: the mother, the father, and the ending. In the movie the mother, Hester, is portrayed as a loving and self-sacrificing person. While in the short story she is exposed to be a cold-hearted, and greedy person. Another instance where the short story and movie differ is the role of the father. In the beginning of the written story the author reveals Hester to be a cold-hearted mother. “She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them”(75). In public she is thought of as the perfect mother, but in private she and her children know her true feelings. “Everyone else said of her: ‘She is such a good mother. She adores her children.’ Only she herself, and her children themselves, knew it was not so. They read it in each other’s eyes”(75). Hester resents her children and her husband. She blames all of her bad “luck” on the fact that she is married to an unlucky man. “And aren’t you lucky either, mother? I can’t be if I married an unlucky husband. But by yourself, aren’t you? I used to think I was, before I married. Now I think I am very unlucky indeed”(77). In the written story Hester also appears to be greedy. When Paul arranges for her to receive one thousand pounds a year for five years, Hester wants it all at...

...ABSTRACT Trees are an important part of every community. Trees increase our quality of life by bringing natural elements and wildlife habitats into urban settings. Many neighborhoods are also the home of old trees that serve as historic landmarks. The tree observations goal is to help people maintain the health of their community and their state’s trees and forest. INTRODUCTION Trees have supported and sustained life throughout our existence. Different species display an endless variety of shapes and forms. In this experiment I had tested the ability to present information about factors affecting the health and measurements of trees. METHODS I used a Biltmore stick to measure the diameter (DBH) of the tree. I also had to find an area with at least twenty trees for measurements, recorded the information I obtain on a tree observation sheet. MATERIALS Biltmore stick, tree observation sheets, an area with twenty trees, pencil RESULTS The species of trees was from a neighborhood called Green Acres. Measurements taken at the site; shown that Maple/Boxelder trees in the site was identified as a more common species in the area and illustrated in good health with minor problems. For the other selected trees, no significant difference in circumference was found between all other trees because of the weather. DISCUSSION Overall the best time to measure trees is between June and September other observations can be made anytime during...

...There once was a unique world not yet discovered, it was a planet square instead of round, orbiting in a lone galaxy far away from earth. One star, called the flagliop, and then planet llamah , where the original llama species came from. Once upon a time, and this is where the story begins, far before the evolution of mankind there was the llamas in their natural habitat on their square planet full of nature, success, and beauty. Two llamas in a scientific lab took place sitting standing at the telescope exploring the universe, when all of a sudden, a brown llama bursts inside and yells; "I'VE MADE SOME UNBELIEVEABLE DISCOVERIES!!" The white llama currently starring into the telescope turns around and says, "And may I ask what these discoveries are..?" The brown llama replies and says, "Of course, Professor Fluff." "Then go on." "I was just observing through the main telescope at front, you know, the giant one, and I happen to come across something exciting." "Get on with it Scit. You're starting to bother me." Scit blurts, "I've found another life form. They seem to be quite gigantic, and they are located thousands of light years away. They don't seem anyway intelligent, and they look much violent." Professor Fluff laughs at the poor excuse of a new scientist in training. "What's so funny?" The black llama listening on the side speaks up. "I wouldn't mind taking a look." So then Scit waved over the black llama into the other doors. The black llama looked into the glass...

...The Pearl Unfortunately, we can not look into the future; but imagine if we could. When making a decision, one can only predict what each choice will result in. What if there were a way to foresee the outcome of each option before carrying out a decision? During decision-making, one generally finds himself predicting the effects of each option. Sometimes, what seems to be the most favorable option, results in an unfavorable resolution. Values play a tremendous role in determining the favorability of a decision. Decisions made by characters such as Kino and Juana in The Pearl can be viewed as wise in some motives, but foolish in others. Immediately after finding the magnificent pearl, Kino becomes warned of the possible evil that it brings. On the first night that Kino possessed the pearl, it became a threat to the family, someone tried to steal it. Selling the pearl became an urgency. The next day when Kino confronts the pearl buyers they try to lessen the value of the pearl. Juan Thomás, Kino’s brother, warned Kino that this may occur. Aware of this, Kino decides to not take the highest offer of one thousand five hundred pesos, he knows that the pearl’s worth exceeds the pearl buyers offer. One may praise this decision as wise because Kino did not fall victim to the pearl buyer’s sly decisiveness. On the other hand, one thousand five hundred pesos amounts to a larger fortune than anyone of Kino’s decent would truly ever need. If Kino could have looked into the future and...

...Name Professor Course 3/1/2015 The rocking-horse winner D.H. Lawrence’s “The Rocking-Horse Winner” is a short, tense story with a morbid ending. Throughout the piece, Lawrence often paints his characters as two-dimensional and unlikeable. Hester is portrayed in the story as hard, cold and lacking the ability to show love to her children. She speaks to the children with a certain bitterness that Lawrence never explains; we do not understand why Hester acts the way that she does, so we do not empathize with her. These characteristics make one to distaste Hester more. With an unlikeable mother and growing tension in the family’s house, it is easy for a reader to feel removed from the text. However, Lawrence skillfully uses contradictions within the personalities of the characters in the story and personifies inanimate objects in the text to keep readers engaged in the story. By subverting our first impressions of almost all the characters and the storylines, Lawrence captivates his audience by keeping us guessing and hoping for a resolution until the last sentence of the story. Although the main narrative of the story follows young Paul through his demise, Lawrence inserts the most contradictions in Hester’s character arc depicting her as a complex and dark woman. These contradictions add layers of complexity to their relationship and keep the reader questioning the direction of the story. Using a decidedly fairytale-like style, Lawrence introduces Hester, describing...

...What is scarcity? What makes scarcity so important in today’s economy? By definition we know scarcity simply means there are unlimited human wants which are met by limited resources. We have learned that economics is basically the study of choice, and we have also learned that scarcity brings along the ability to have a choice. So in essence without scarcity we would have no choice, which would basically mean there would be no economy. So we see now how important scarcity really is to our economy and to our ability to have choice. So how does scarcity affect our lives in a real world situation? If we were to take our natural resources for example, we find the most used are that of oil, land, water, and time. These elements are found to be some of the most important to the economy because they each provide money for the market. Obviously the more they are used, the more unavailable they become. We also find the higher the demand for them, their costs start to become higher. We also find that time plays becomes an important role in this cycle because, as we all know, time is never really on our side. There just is not a lot of time before resources run out. It is important that we use time in the best way we can. For example, if my ice maker produces one thousand blocks of ice in one day, and there is an order for one thousand and two hundred, what should I do? I can either stay late to make the extra two hundred blocks, but I would have to miss a family event and...

...Mic Check, One-Two Suzanne Fields, the author of “Bad Raps: Music Rebels Revel in Their Thug Life” wrote her article on May 21, 2001 for insight on the news. In her article, Fields talks about how rap music has negative effects on our younger generation. She personally believes that the lyrics in these songs have a harsh effect on our youth and that it is the worst genre of music out right now. While reading, I found her opinion to be extremely biased and unfair. I also found myself disagreeing with almost every bad thing she stated about the rap genre since many other genres can have the same types of effects on younger people when they listen to them. Fields starts out her article by saying that rap music “expresses the worst kind of images” and is harmful to our younger generations. She thinks that the lyrics “employ vulgar street idioms” and are too harsh. She also states that she believes their lyrics come from “a world of broken families, absent fathers, illegitimate children and matriarchal dominance, often subsidized by welfare.” (Fields) Fields continues her argument against rap music by saying that the reason for the harsh lyrics is because language and experience of poetry and romance are absent from the lives of the rappers and their audiences. Fields personally does not know the true lives of the rappers, so she shouldn't be judging them just off of their lyrical content. Fields continues her article against rap music by using a couple facts about other singers...

...colonialism, slavery, or their aftermath as they are lived out in many parts of the world today”(Pratt 34) by Mary Louise Pratt in her writing titled “Arts of the contact zone”. This song has been helpful and caused huge issues within the communities. The song shows the struggle that people of color go through in society and how different races portray each other based on stereotypes. NWA, which stands for Niggas With Attitude, wrote this song as a parody. I believe that they presented themselves with such vulgar because they felt like everyone saw them in a negative way. They became what the public thought they were. In doing so they caused a lot of commotion with the FBI and police. The song is from the view point of the 3 attorneys; MC Ren, Ice Cube, Eazy-E and the judge Dr. Dre. Each attorney shares their story about the struggle of being a person of color living in Compton. The first verse is by Ice Cube who mentions “and not the other color so police think/ they have the authority to kill a minority”(NWA 5). What Ice Cube is saying is that cops think because they are white, they are superior to people of color. The cops assume they have the right to kill them and abusing the authority they have. Instead of protecting the civilians, they are harming them. Later on Cube says “searching my car, looking for the product/thinking every nigga is selling narcotics/ you'd rather see, me in the pen/ than me and Lorenzo rolling in a Benz-o”(NWA 6) The police will stop these young...

...often arose. Informal competitions started when a few truly exceptional dancers were noticed on the dance floor; the rest of the people would back off and allow the leaders to duke it out. As these informal competitions became increasingly common and popular, announced competitions became part of a night out at hip hop clubs. Whether they arose organically or they were advertised in advance, this competitive nature helped hip hop retain the "battle" culture that has existed since the beginning. This type of competition can also be seen in other dance forms, perhaps most notably in tap dancing of the early 20th century. *The Hammer Dance (Mc Hammer) MC Hammer brought rap music to the mainstream audience with his album Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, the biggest-selling rap album of all time.
