Media. News and social media has shown police officials using excessive force. This kind of media is nothing new to the public. The media is everywhere and never gives the full story. The media displays exciting titles to grab people’s attention and posts to social media articles to get people talking. How much of the media is actually true? Why do we hear so many negative events but when something positive happens the media is nowhere to be found? The news sources have given law enforcement a bad name. “Now is the time that not many people want to be police officers because of media” (Scott Jackson, personal interview, May 9, 2016).

Then the court still has to take into consideration if the force was excessive for the circumstances. After considering all the factors and evidence provided, the courts agreed with the department that the force was necessary and not excessive to gain possession of the drugs and the department handled the situation correctly. Therefore, the Appellate Division agreed that the Tompkins County Court was correct in denying the defendant’s request for a hearing and there was no excessive force used in this circumstance.
The media will not be the only ones to be able to prevent how law enforcement is portrayed. It needs to start with the individuals and the departments themselves and then hopefully the media would want to participate and join the bandwagon on being positive.
