North Korea, for years on the edge of famine, have crossed the boundary, and dropped into the dark abyss. Food is rationed to one-fifth the necessary amount for survival, up to 5 million people could starve to death within the year, and 80,000 children are in "imminent peril" of starvation (UNICEF). North Korea, formally known as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” is susceptible to food crises because of political and economic isolation, extreme militarization, and climate change. Last year, widespread flooding in the country’s main rice producing region resulted in a poor harvest, plus an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, which affected the cattle used to harvest crops, also exacerbated shortages (Ahn). North Korea’s suffering has gotten out of hand, such that some of the DPRK’s citizens have resorted to cannibalism. ...Image of the United States Military in the Public Eye The United States military has had its ups and downs in popularity with the American public. In World War II, America couldn’t get enough of its soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen. However, during Vietnam, the American public equated its soldiers with the government and the unpopular war. Soldiers were treated with disrespect when they came home, and they were called things such as “baby killers”. Ironically, many of the soldiers during that era were drafted and did not support the war either, but the general public didn’t seem to care. Today, I think the public is back to the days of World War II in terms of support for its troops. This support is shown in many different ways, but I would like to focus on just three visual aspects: symbols, images, and cartoons. The first approach I would like to explore is the use of signs and symbols. According to Berger (2008), “a sign … is anything that stands for something else” (p. 49). He then goes on to explain the three different types of signs: icons, indexes, and symbols. Berger (2008) defines a symbol is something that conventionally means what it represents. There is no logical connection; you must learn the meaning. Several examples include Christianity’s cross, and the Jewish symbol of the Star of David. Boot camp for women was ten weeks, technically eight as the first two weeks didn’t count because you didn’t get your “real” drill instructors until the third week. Something like that, it is all a blur, and it was thirty years ago. There are three phases of boot camp. Each phase has its’ challenges. If you make it through all three phases, you will be called a Marine and not recruit. During the first two weeks, you are with what is called an Initial Drill Instructor. Her job is to get you acclimated to life on Parris Island. The first two weeks is a whirlwind of activity. You are stripped of all civilian attire; you are equipped with military clothing and all other gear you will need to get you to graduation day – and that day could not get there fast enough. In the long run this will weaken the military to a devastating outcome. I remember when I first joined the military, it took me about three full months to complete the screening and entry process before I was finally able to shipped for basic training. This process included everything from drug screening, physical fitness tests, psychological screening and educational knowledge (Joining the Army, not dated).
