According to Shapiro and Jazaieri and Goldin (2012), “Mindfulness is defined as the awareness that arises through intentionally paying attention in an open, kind and discerning way” (p. 504). Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a group program that targets mindful awareness including mental states and processes. MSBR was established in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn with two intentions in mind: to be used as an effective module for training individuals to practice meditation and yoga for the intent of stress reduction and health enhancement and to be used as a model that can be adapted in healthcare with reference to pain, stress and illness (Brantley, 2005).
