...Paper - Influencing Leadership Over time there have been many of leaders in our world’s history, all of which have left their mark in some way, shape, or form. Some of the world’s greatest leaders have left a negative mark behind them where as many have found ways to leave a positive mark in their wake. One of the greatest things that any leader can strive for is the worldly influences they leave behind for generations to follow. It is in these influences, both positive and negative, that leaders of modern time are able to model their leadership style. One of the greatest things I wish to achieve is the ability to have any leadership I have exhibited to transcend me in death in order for our world’s future leader’s a better chance to provide positive leadership practices and induce proper change when required. Spanning as far back in time as records can call upon there have always been people placed into positions of leadership. In the prehistoric times when societies were merely small groups of Neanderthals we now call “cavemen” there was always an alpha male. The alpha male was typically the strongest and wisest of the group, charged with the safety in all decisions made by the group to ensure the best possible chances for survival in the harsh prehistoric times. Later, as time passed along these Neanderthals developed further and crated the larger societies of the ancient Egyptian empire. In the times of the ancient Egyptian empire leadership started to take an...

...successful leaders to continue the greatness of our Air Force. In order to better yourself as a leader you need a goal or ideal leader you want to model yourself after. My example of an ideal leader is Mohammed Ali, one of the greatest boxers ever to live. Mohammed Ali is a man of morals and the definition of a great leader. Early in his career in 1964, Ali converted his religion from Christianity to Islam; the same time changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali (“The Official1”). Two years later after his conversion and name change, he got drafted into the military service even after he failed the draft aptitude test. Ali refused to serve because of his Muslim beliefs. In 1967 he was found guilty of refusing to be inducted into the military services (“The Official1”). Although after a few years he was cleared of the charges, the damage was already done. The boxing association had already taken away his World Heavy Weight title and suspended him from boxing for three and a half years. Ali gave up some of his prime boxing years to fight for social equity. Ali is a political figure who fought for what he believed in even when the odds were against him and inspired others do the same. The 1950’s and 60’s was a time of racial tension and many Blacks of America were seeking leadership and Ali became one of those leaders. Ali stepped into a leadership role by using is position as World Heavy Champion of the world to bring to light...

The principles, the actions and the vision that form the basis for SCP are not unknown, but there is a considerable gap between knowledge and action and behavioural incentives are not sufficient for system change. In the conversations between the authors of this paper, a practitioner and an academic, on the reasons for this knowledge-action gap there emerged a common recognition of the potentially significant role of values and particularly values-based leadership in the processes and partnerships that work for sustainability transitions in SCP. Our starting point is that values, what we humans consider to be good, are formed by a range of factors (cultural, political, social, religious) and are...

...Abraham Lincoln said, “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.“ Our character is much more than just our reputation, what we try to display for others to see. It is who we are even when no one is watching. Having a Good Character means doing the right thing just because it is right to do what is right. (Learn More About Abraham Lincoln) The Dictionary Definitions of “Character” One dictionary defines character as “the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.” Another says it is “the complex of mental and ethical traits marking a person.” In still another dictionary, character is said to be “the stable and distinctive qualities built into an individual’s life which determine his or her response regardless of circumstances.” How Character Determines Success In Life Our Character Is What Determines How We Respond to the Situations and Circumstances of Life The dictionary definitions said character is a “complex of mental and ethical traits“, that those traits, or qualities, are “distinctive to an individual” and that they are “built into an individual’s life.” It is those character qualities, those character traits, that determine a person’s response in any given situation. For example, a person in with a strong character quality of truthfulness is much more likely to accurately report the facts in a given situation than a person who tends to be characterized by deceptiveness. Someone who has the character trait of alertness will be more likely to...

...Introduction Leadership? What is it? What all does it encompass? Can you define it? Over decades, leadership has been a very fluid concept. Various scholars and researches (maybe influenced by the leaders of their respective times) define the term differently with each definition possessing unique features, qualities and its significance to the society as whole. For example, in 1930s, E.S. Bogardus defined it as “a process in which the activities of many are organized to move in a specific direction by one leader”. This definition signifies ‘Directional leadership’, which is to say one-leading-many. In 1990s, however, J.Rost’s definition on the other hand was “Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes” i.e. mutual influence for mutual benefits. The question arises which one is correct? If any? The answer is both in their respective domains. Leadership is a vast and multifaceted concept that is ever evolving with time. Thus, it is not important to chase the definition of the concept but to concentrate on its essence. The most important essence of leadership is follower-ship, since without followers one cannot be a leader. The word ‘leadership’ misleads into believing that the leader is the central figure in the concept, it is in fact the followers who are of the utmost importance. It is imperative for a successful leader to understand the needs of the followers and to empower, inspire them...

...The Different Models of Leadership xxxxxx University of Phoenix The Different Models of Leadership There are many types of leadership models or theories. A quick Internet search will provide a variety of results. By filtering these results, leaders can find the appropriate style. Businesses can struggle if the right model or theory is not implemented within the organization. One consistent thing in life is change, and as society changes leaders must adapt to maintain competitiveness and efficiency. This adaptation allows leaders to keep employee satisfaction and productivity at high levels. A further analysis provides an examination of four different leadership models that includes situational leadership, transactional leadership, moral leadership, and visionary leadership. The need of the organization can determine which leadership model is the best, however; there may be one that is appropriate for any situation. Situational Leadership Leaders use Situational leadership to apply the appropriate behaviors and aspects of a certain situation that will be accepted by a subordinate (Wren, 1995, p. 207). Leaders and managers experience challenging tasks daily. Keeping employees motivated by using one certain style can be challenging. “Leadership effectiveness is thought to be enhanced if a manager uses the style of leadership that best matches the readiness, ability and willingness of subordinates and that a good match between leadership style and subordinate readiness leads...

...Leadership Models University of Phoenix Leadership Models Leadership is a group phenomenon that includes interpersonal influence or persuasion, is goal directed and can lead others through certain actions or to achieving goals through influence, and has hierarchy within the group that can be formal and well defined or informal and flexible. Leaders assist in establishing goals and reaching those goals through actions, allowing individuals in leadership positions to be effective (Nahavandi, 2006). Leadership research has been and will be completed by many individuals and has led to many theories and models to be developed that have both similarities and differences. Four theories or models of leadership that have been researched and developed include trait theories, transactional leadership, transformational leadership, and situational leadership. The research on each of these has varied in amount and focus, but mostly the information has helped to develop theories and styles that can be important in understanding and developing leadership skills (Clawson & Bevan, 2006). Trait Theories The first type of leadership theories studied revolved around the traits effective leaders were shown to have. Trait theories of leadership focused on what traits an individual has that assist in his or her leadership abilities. These traits were considered innate or heritable and were believed to be passed down through familial generations (Zaccaro, 2007). Originally the traits were...

...Transformational Leadership Introduction “The goal of transformational leadership is to ‘transform’ people and organizations in a literal sense – to change them in mind and heart; enlarge vision, insight, and understanding; clarify purposes; make behavior congruent with beliefs, principles and values; and bring about changes that are permanent, self perpetuating, and momentum building” (Covey, 1990, p. 287). The goal of the transformational leader is to change the ineffective to the effective. The leader would make changes to ensure the effectiveness, growth and outcome benefits the corporation. Transformational leadership is the “style of leadership in which the leader identifies the needed change, creates a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executes the change with the commitment of the members of the group” (Transformational Leadership, n.d.). Northouse (2007) goes further to explain transformational leadership as the process whereby a person engages others and creates a connection that raises the level of motivation and morality in both the leader and the follower (p. 176). Two of the most inspirational transformational leaders of this generation have been Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy. King, with his “I have a Dream” speech inspired the Civil Rights movement. President Kennedy’s vision of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth” inspired the space race of the 1960s and 1970s (Greenberg, 2005, p. 364). These men...
