Everyone always asked me if I was nervous and anxious about leaving Minnesota for college. I decided to leave everything behind by deserting my family, high school friends, co-workers, and giving up my whole entire way of life to come to Cal Poly for Physics. Sometimes, I question if all of the stress I am putting myself through is worth it. I have to learn how to live, make new friends, and manage my lifestyle and time all by myself. Worst of all, my closest support is my uncle who is over five hours away in San Diego. After being away from Minnesota for two months, I have discovered everything that I gave up in order to be here is beneficial for my well-being. Since the beginning of my journey, I have not only developed a stronger bond with …show more content…
When months until my departure slowly turned into weeks and then days, I realized how much my community supported me. For instance, I worked as a bus boy and host at a restaurant in my hometown for three years. I slowly developed emotional relationships with the many customers, when I poured their coffees on Sundays. If the spouse of a regular passed away, often times they would let me know about it, and I would share my condolences for them. When customers found out that I was quitting to go to college they supported me. They said things like, “We are going to miss you so much, and we believe you will do spectacular things in college. Just like you have here.” These words of confidence provided me with some peace of mind when I left. Moving away also meant I would no longer spend time with the friends I have known for the majority of my lifetime. Here at college, I cannot easily travel to my best friend’s house to seek advice, or simply hang out with them. Again, just like my community when I left they told me, “We know you will be successful out in the west coast, but we expect you to come back for Christmas!” My friends’ support gave me more confidence that I could make …show more content…
I understand now that my actions and words affect everyone around me. Even if it’s just a friendly smile towards a customer, I can make anyone’s life better. In one month’s time I discovered that I can change the prospective of people about myself and the world. I was able to make a boring thirty hour car ride with my dad into a fulfilled adventure of comedy. In one month, I was able to spend increased amounts of time with my grandma, and I made her days brighter. I was able to imprint my personality on others, but they also were able to impact me during my last months in Minnesota. I finally understand that I should have a lot more confidence in my future, since everyone around me believes in me. I trust I can use these skills of self-confidence and collaboration and apply it to my career in physics. While testing a theory or running an experiment it is vital to believe in myself. Also, I can use my acquired collaboration abilities to communicate results to my

A Narrative Essay About Moving To A Community College

...Three years ago I left my home and came to the US following the dream of better education. At that time I just turned eighteen and had no experience in travelling, my English was undeveloped, and I was very limited in finances. Although I had doubts about starting a new life alone in a foreign country, I persevered and decided to surpass my limits. My primal reason of travelling across the ocean was to rediscover American culture, avoiding stereotypes I grew up on, and to search for opportunities. While working hard all summer long for sixty hours a week, I made time to travel, meet people, and got to know the community. One day my American friend brought me to the local community college in Manteo, North Carolina. I passed all the tests and...

Opinions on the Move to Open Classes from June to September

...Chapter 1 The Problem and Its Background Introduction Changes are permanent thing on earth. Are the people is ready enough to accept the changes on the educational system? The current opening of classes here in the Philippines usually starts from June to March but our lawmakers want to amend the opening of classes. The existing school calendar which spans from June to March is often disrupted as destructive typhoons plague the region during the rainy season that’s why our lawmakers decided to move the opening of classes from September through May to avoid numerous class suspensions and serve to protect the students during strong typhoons. The Department of Education said that it is open to the proposal by some sectors, including lawmakers to move the opening of classes but they want to ensure the comfort of the students in school and stresses the need for a comprehensive study. While the Department of Education is open on the proposal, some did not welcome this idea. An initial survey on the matter conducted way back in 2009. On the respondents, 66 percent were against the move while 34 percent were in favor. [1] Also, another ground for rejecting the proposal is the traditions celebrated during summer and being not conducive in learning because of hot weather during March. The delay in suspension of classes is one of the reasons why our lawmakers and other sectors in the community urge to move the classes from June to September. Unexpected...

...Packing up your room and leaving your home to head off to college is something that everyone has thought about and some dream about. I was one of them, excited to be the only one in my family to made it to college. But as soon as I started actually packing my things and getting ready for school I began to panic and rethinking my decision on leaving. I remember packing my clothes in a big box the night before and crying on my floor thinking about how I was leaving home for longer than I ever had before. ...half of college freshmen show some concern with how to pay for college. This is the highest this number has been since 1971 (S. Chan and Kim Chan). The amount of college graduate debt has been rapidly increasing also. With limited jobs available because of the high unemployment rate, college graduates find themselves staying in debt even longer. However, grants and financial aid are available to students, but students still struggle to pay for their college tuition. Although some claim that higher education is still affordable, higher education costs too much because the state’s revenue is low, the unemployment rate is high, and graduates cannot pay off loans. One reason that higher education is not affordable is that the states’ revenue is low and the states are in debt. Because of their decreasing tax revenues, many states need to make cuts in their budget. As a result of this, tuition is rising and other changes are happening throughout colleges. Some of these changes include: higher student to faculty ratios, less but larger classes, and fewer on-campus jobs that normally support students (Scaliger). These changes affect students and impact their view and decisions of certain colleges. The tuition rate has also “been rising at about 6 percent a year for most of the past ten years” (S. Chan and Kim Chan). This percent inevitably makes it harder for students to find an affordable college. High tuition prices also keep some people from attending their dream college. All of...

...want to pursue. This causes problems when trying to break barriers and work to create new innovations. College presents students with the opportunity to become whoever they choose to be, and find an occupation to fit that. College is an opportunity that allows you to pursue the “American Dream”. The opportunities that college present you with are endless and are open to however you choose to use them. As we are occupying our time about the limits we make ourselves we should be working to broaden our horizon in all aspects. Frank Bruni discussed specific points about what he believes the college experience should be such as networking, involvement in school activities and social media. Moving on from anything you have spent a lot time with or doing takes a lot of willpower to complete. Though this may be hard doing, moving on to become something greater is key to your success. Frank Bruni stresses this in his New York Times article. When in college, students tend to lean towards what they used to do in previous years as a form of comfort and support. This causes students to stay in a “gated community” per say. Students should be networking and expanding themselves rather than trying to recreate their high school years. Joining new groups and clubs instead of reaching to find identical substitutes allows you to broaden your horizons in all social suspects. Students believe college is too much about finding resources that aid them with their own personal preferences when they should...

The Difference Between High School and College

...Beginning college studies is like starting an entirely new life. One would think that college was simply an academic extension of high school, but that is far from the truth. The commencement of one life marks the end of another life. It is a time where the previous life of a high schooler ceases to exist, and is replaced by a different world. In fact, the major changes a student goes through are more indicative of growing up than they are of getting smarter. The following paragraphs explore some of the differences student face when moving on from high school to college. Often, students nearing their high school graduation wonder what new challenges will be waiting for them in college. When the days of college finally arrive, they realize that these challenges are major and will alter their lives forever. From the first semester, right from the start, the college freshman notices a drastic difference in terms of personal freedom. For one thing, most college students do not continue to live with their parents. College is a time when the former high schooler develops a greater level of independence. The student grows and matures, moves her belongings and finds a new place to live. Sometimes, she finds a roommate, someone who is not a member of the family. Moving doesn't just have to be leaving the home in search of a new one. Sometimes students make an even bigger transition than simply leaving the house. In the United States it is very common for students to leave their home...

Worldview

...If you were to walk around a college campus and conduct a survey on the percentage of students that are constantly stressed out, what would that percentage be? 50%? 70%? Maybe even 95%? It is common knowledge that one's college years, although fun, can be extremely stressful. Many college students have never been taught how to relieve that stress. It is scientifically proven that exercise, especially running, is the most underused stress reliever there is. Now, with that being said, how many college students are going to get up off of the couch and go for a run? The answer: Not very many. What college students need is motivation. Motivation can come in many ways, but one way is to give them a cause to run for. If colleges all around the country start sponsoring 5k’s, 10k’s, or even Marathons that are run for cancer patients or children in need, more college students will be willing to go from the couch to the street for those causes. Another way to get students moving is creating fun ways to work out. Normal gym workouts with weights and treadmills can become monotonous, but add a little spice to a workout, and getting students off of their bums may not be so hard. Anything from crazy, muddy, races to hot yoga in the park to having a “bring your dog for a run” day, can be great ideas to help create a guide for students to become more health conscious. Yet, being healthy does not solely consist of moving one’s body. The definition of health, in all reality, is to remain in a state...
