At the second job I ever had when I was only 16 years old the organization behavior aspect played a very important role. When I was first hired there was an office manager in our department who was not very effective. She lacked communication skills and came off as condescending. She was moved to another department and the general manager brought in a different office manager who had better people skills. The result was a much happier work environment. However, the new office manager was a “yes man” to the general manager and when he began to make bad decisions there was no one there to tell him. The positive effect that the new office manager had on the organization was that she opened up communication between management and employees, we all understood our roles better but the communication to upper management broke down.
At the most recent job that I had with a national tax company for income tax season they put a large emphasis on organization behavior this year. The training consisted mostly of “soft skills” as they called it. We had hours of training and practice about how to interact with our co-workers and customers. This was very positive because in a service business like we were in, the communication and cooperation really counted. The chain of command was laid out for us so that if a customer had an issue, we knew exactly how to best handle that problem as well.
