...might say otherwise. Multitasking has become widely common in teens recently. They can benefit a lot from it. Studies have shown that teens who multitask a lot tend to have good skills in their other 5 senses, such as sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. These senses are beneficial and crucial to a teen’s life, they are what makes...

...(par. 4). Faria Sana et al., authors for Computers and Education, state that multitasking is a part of our everyday lives (par. 1). In addition, Marc E. Weksler and Babette B. Weksler, experts at the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical Center, state that people believe that multitasking is more successful than it really is (385). Weksler and Weksler go on to explain that studies suggest that almost all people try to do more than one thing at a time, but at the price of jeopardizing their performances on each task at hand (386). One example of a person who tries to multitask is a student. Often, students try to do more than one task at a time, like text and listen to their teacher, but students are not learning when they try to multitask while using electronic devices in the classroom. Students should learn to stay focused in class...

...Pedestrian Behavior: Multitasking while crossing an Intersection Many people pride themselves on the ability to multitask, which includes using cell phones while crossing the street. While current literature supports the phenomenon suggesting that more pedestrians are engaging in multitasking as they cross intersections. Multitasking was observed as pedestrians crossed the intersections of Georgia Avenue and Bryant Street in Washington Dc. Are there more people crossing the street who are multi-tasking, or who are not multitasking. How are pedestrians multi-tasking, as they cross the street, were participants using handset at their ears, using headphones, or looking down at their phones. Or finally if they chose not to multitask while they crossed the intersection. These finding suggest that pedestrians did not engage in multitasking while they proceeded to cross the intersection. Keywords: Multitasking, intersection, cell phone, headphones, handset, pedestrians. Risky Pedestrian Behavior: Multi-tasking at Intersections With the attention of cell-phone distraction while driving, its risks, injuries, and deaths in the media and research, we would consider that pedestrians would be more cautious with multi-tasking while crossing intersections. However, since we are in the age of technology, pedestrians are more likely to engage in multitasking. In a study, by (Stavrinos, Byington, & Schwebel 2011) the researchers argues that children view cell phones to...

...over the past couple of years. Many college students spend late nights binging on their favorite television shows. There has not been much research done, on the effects that Netflix has on students, specifically those in college. Although, there have been several studies done on the effects media has on secondary students, as well as college students. Our study will try to determine whether watching Netflix while doing schoolwork will effect the efficiency, and accuracy of the task given to them. In order to get a better understanding of what we might expect from our study, we chose to analyze five studies that discuss media and technology in regards to secondary and college students. Watching Netflix, and working on homework is an example of multitasking. Multitasking is simply splitting attention, between two or more items. How can multitasking affect the everyday student? We believe that all media and technology can affect a student while he or she is trying to complete homework outside of the classroom. The studies below discuss data based on students multitasking with media and technology....

...The word multitasking connotes a way where a person can complete many tasks successfully in little amounts of time, where in reality “someone can do two things at once, but they can't focus effectively on two things at once” (Keller 3). Despite what many believe, it can be demonstrated that multitasking is terrible for the brain. While some argue that it’s beneficial to multitask, research proves that it’s detrimental to focus on many tasks simultaneously. A person wishing to increase the amount of free time they have will argue that multitasking allows you to combine tasks and get the job done faster. Many who support multitasking will say “rather than doing one thing after the other, a person can combine tasks so they can more quickly get everything done (Source 3). However rather than...

...Stephanie Esquivel Susan Cooper English 101 5 Oct. 2015 Multitasking In a generation where multitasking has become a part of our lives, I like many others have become drawn to that lifestyle. These days it’s rare to find someone who does not multitask and isn’t able to multitask very well. Multitasking for me is helpful when the amount of work I need to get done increases. From being in school full time and also having to run a house it takes much of my time and being able to multitask effectively makes my day easier. I think multitasking is great when it comes naturally, for some it might even be an advantage. Although some might believe that splitting your attention into different jobs causes work quality, I think it all depends on the task and what requires more attention. For me it’s all about time management and how my day is split and what my priorities are. I’m married and although school is important my husband comes first. Before it was so much easier to get home, eat a hot pocket and wait till my mom got home to cook but that’s not my life anymore and I get home to do what she did and what everyone takes for granted. My multitasking is caused by my busy schedule and the thing I most want to get to at the end of the day is my family and for that reason it’s just easier for me to get multiple things done at once. Multitasking at home means I can get more things done at a certain amount...

...Though rarely mentioned or discussed, multitasking effects people of all ages in one way or another. Whether it’s doing schoolwork while watching tv, or skyping someone while in line at the bank, modern society and technology allow user to do virtually anything they want at any time. This immediately raises the question, “just because you can, should you?” All of my research done so far has been in an attempt to find an answer to this question in regards to multitasking in everyday life. Every article I have found seems to have something different, and often contradictory, to say about multitasking. Of the sources I have found so far, the most substantial and concrete of those have all had similar views on multitasking. As of now, I am aware...

...Think you're pretty good at texting while driving? According to a new study, you have no idea how bad you actually are. Researchers at Ohio State University asked college kids to complete two visual tasks similar to driving and texting, and compared their performance with students attempting one audio and one visual task similar to talking on the phone while driving. The texters not only performed worse than the talkers—no surprise—but they also rated their performance better. "Many people have this overconfidence in how well they can multitask, and our study shows that this particularly is the case when they combine two visual tasks," says Zheng Wang, lead author on the study and assistant professor of communication at Ohio State. The results are in line with previous work that suggest that drivers overestimate their ability to multitask. The participants attempting two visual tasks had to complete a pattern-matching puzzle on a computer screen while typing walking directions to a person over Google Chat, an instant-messaging (IM) system. Students were told the person needing directions was another student named Jennifer. The students tasked with the combined audio and visual tasks had to complete the same computer puzzle while verbally giving directions to Jennifer using Google Talk, a voice chat system. The students were also asked to do the computer puzzle with no distractions. The two multitasking scenarios can be compared to what drivers face, says Wang. People...

...the Chromebook has a 4 gigabyte local memory with a sixteen gigabyte hard drive. It does however, offers one hundred gigabytes of cloud space. The laptop has an eight gigabyte local memory and a hard drive with one terabyte of space (laptopmag.com). Both of these devices have perks of their own. Depending on the needs of the user, one device may work better than the other. If the user is a person who will always be connected to the internet, does need to store their files on local memory, and does not multitask often, then the Chromebook would work just fine. If the user will not always be connected to the internet, multitasks, and prefers to have their files readily available, the laptop would be a better choice. My workplace recently chose to purchase Chromebooks because they are less expensive, and work well for their needs. They mainly use the Chromebooks in a computer lab for children learning to type or for the students to use when taking state mandated tests. As a college student, my decision would be different. I am someone who uses many different programs at once and prefer to have my files readily available on my device. I do not always have an internet connection but still use my device to work on word documents or edit photos. My decision would be to buy a laptop because it works better for my needs. ...College success is defined as achieving a personal educational goal. Many factors lead to success in college, and identifying these positive influences is important to serve as a guide for parents who desire a college education for their children and for college students who want to achieve their educational goals. There are differences of opinion in ranking these factors or influences in order of importance. There are some who believe college is everything and that furthering an education is the best route to take in life. There are others who think poorly about college and think that getting out of high school and getting a job is more important. What they fail to realize is that they are not thinking about the future. There are three factors most likely to lead to college success, such as placing a high degree of value on the college degree, putting effort into learning and receiving parental support. Some of the issues concerning college degrees are that some people question the value of a college degree. A bachelor’s degree was once seen as a guaranteed ticket to a career oriented, well-paying job. However, today many...

Results of the experiments show that the performance was better when the tasks were scheduled (Experiment -1) than during multitasking (Experiment- 2). However, the performance was no better when the subjects were free to do the tasks as per their will (Experiment-3). Also, women are perceived to be better multi-taskers than men but the results did not show any significant difference for the same. Aim Multitasking is at the heart of today’s workplace. To understand COLLEGE’s perception towards multitasking we conducted a survey regarding multitasking and how people perceive it. We found that most people at COLLEGE believe that multitasking improves productivity and consider they can easily juggle between tasks. The study was conducted at a large, four-year, private university in the Mid-Atlantic. All undergraduate, African American students enrolled in the College of General Studies, School of Health Sciences, and School of Education comprised the sample population. Volunteer participants completed a Facebook™ Activity Survey, which is an instrument used to collect semester grade point averages (GPAs), time-use of Facebook™, multitasking information, type of Facebook™ activities, and demographic information. The results of the survey were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression statistics. The analysis showed the strength of the relationship between the predictor variables (average daily minutes of using Facebook™, demographic data, academic data, daily minutes of multitasking, and types of Facebook™ activities used while multitasking) and the criterion variable (semester GPA). The...
