...Birth of My Niece The Birth of my Niece Being able to be in the delivery room while my sister was in labor was an amazing experience. When my sister found out she was pregnant we were all upset. She was only 17 at the time and I still couldn’t believe it. I was very disappointed in her because I thought she knew better. There was not much I could do but support her. She needed my support as well as my family’s support. I just kept telling myself this all happened for a reason, and a baby is a blessing. As each day went by I became more and more excited. The disappointment was gone, and all that was left was happiness and excitement. My family and I were really curious and excited to find out what my sister was going to have. My dad was hoping for a boy because there were no boys in the house besides himself and my grandpa. The rest of us were hoping for a girl. As the day quickly approached for when she finds out what she is having, we all became happy and nervous. That day my mom had went with my sister to her doctor’s appointment, and shortly after I received a text saying, “It’s a Girl!!!” Her due date was October 28, 2011. Words could not explain how happy I was, and that same day I started shopping for my niece. As my sister was just about done with her first trimester she could finally hold food down. She couldn’t even hold a smoothie from Jamba Juice down. It was a rough time for her. I felt bad because every time I would be eating she would want to eat, but she knew...

...Zambia, my country of birth where I spent a significant part of my childhood, got its name from the Zambezi River, the largest river flowing into the Indian Ocean. It is a landlocked country located between the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zimbabwe (Holmes & Wong, 2009, p. 7). Zambia’s population has been steadily increasing from 7.8 Million in 1990 (City Population Zambia, 2007) to 12.9 million in 2009 (US Department of State, 2009). At the forefront of Zambia’s economy is its ability to mine for great natural resources such as emeralds, aquamarines, amethyst and tourmalines (Dickovick, 2008, p. 320). It also produces 6% of the world’s copper, making it the fourth largest producing copper nation (Holmes & Wong, 2009, p. 44). Lusaka, the city I grew up in and the capital city of Zambia is one of the fastest growing cities in central Africa. Lusaka has changed dramatically from the time I left in 1990 to the time I visited it a few years ago. The changes in society, economic infrastructure and human condition have been dramatic. Zambia has changed so much over a span of 19 years. All the activities that I remember doing with my family and friends, such as safaris and picnics at the Kafue River, on the weekends and holidays have been closed. The zoo which used to be filled with amazing wildlife, which I frequently visited, does not exist anymore. All the animals which once resided there died or escaped because they were not fed properly or looked after...

...January the month I was born and is also birth defects awareness month. Although you cannot tell by looking at me, I have a birth defect. I was clueless that I had a birth defect until days before my 20th birthday. A severe kidney infection eventually led me to a cystoscope, also known as a bladder scope. When I woke up, surprise! You were born with a few extra parts, specifically an extra kidney (supernumerary it overlaps my other one) and an extra urethra (they are twisted tightly around one another). I had never heard of anyone having an extra kidney. Birth defects are more common than the average individual thinks. According to the CDC, "Every 4 ½ minutes, a baby is born with a major birth defect in the United States." Shockingly, it is reported that only 10% of birth defects are caused by...

...A challenge in my past that required perseverance and determination happened somewhat recently and affected my spouse a little more that it did me. This challenge was childbirth. The planning, the stay at the hospital, the minutes of sleep, the complications, and the new baby made this time very difficult for both of us. If we thought that the pregnancy was rough, then we had no idea what was in store for us during the birthing process. The planning was difficult because it involved the decision to start this process instead of putting it off. The stay at the hospital was taxing because the IVs caused numerous bathroom breaks and the side effects of the medication caused tremors. Not to mention that the sleeping arrangements were not very comfortable. Even less so with a pregnant belly I presume. While these discomforts lasted the entire stay, when the actual birthing process started things started to get really hairy. Thankfully, my wife is tough. Combined with the medicine, the contractions were more uncomfortable than painful. Added to that was the modesty, or lack thereof. It made things embarrassing for her. The worst part of this entire process, though, is the actual birth. It was done surgically and, in short, my wife almost died on the operating table. Things worked out in the end, though. Major crisis averted. After that, things started getting better. The new baby made all the pains and discomforts disappear, but added stress and more sleepless nights;...

..."He tells you that no man can live up to the one who lives in your head. And you tried to change didn't you? Closed your mouth more, tried to be softer, prettier, less volatile, less awake" words from a poet named Warsan Shire. The quote comes from the book, "Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth". This quote comes from a deep hurt that resonates in all women. Girls who have been taught to live in fear. Girls are taught to live in fear of men's wrath. We must cover up, close our mouths, walk only in light, and be visually pleasing at every second. If you do not follow these rules, you will suffer in one way or another. Never in my life will I believe all men to be violent and hateful. All I'm saying is, too many girls have cracked under the pressure. Too many girls are attacked if the 'rules'...

...might just be what that person needs to relax. Another reason one might travel is to visit family and friends. Many people have family members and friends that are located in different parts of the world. They need to visit with them even if it’s for a short period of time. Another reason one might travel is to Celebrate. Many people travel to celebrate special occasions such as: a wedding, anniversary, birthday, or birth. There’s always something to celebrate and it doesn’t always happen where you live. Another reason one might travel is to go on a Honeymoon. When people get married they usually celebrate their wedding by going on a Honeymoon. This usually occurs after a wedding, but there are many occasions where people celebrate their honeymoon years later. Another reason one might travel is work related. Job requirements might mean a fair bit of travel is involved. Even if the travel is within your own country it still has a purpose attached to it. My most recent travel experience was to Six Flags over Georgia. My reason for traveling was to get away from my hometown and go somewhere and have fun and enjoy myself. We chose to go to Six Flags over Georgia because we enjoy riding the rides in the amusement park, and we also were able to go to the water park (White...

Miracle from the forthcoming novel The Proximity of Distance Tope Folarin OUR HEADS MOVE simultaneously, and we smile at the tall, svelte man who strides purposefully down the aisle to the pulpit. Once there, he raises both of his hands then lowers them slightly. He raises his chin and says let us pray. “Dear Father, we come to you today, on the occasion of this revival, and we ask that you bless us abundantly, we who have made it to America, because we know we are here for a reason. We ask for your blessings because we are not here alone. Each of us represents dozens, sometimes hundreds of people back home. So many lives depend on us Lord, and the burden on our shoulders is great. Jesus, bless this service, and bless us. We ask that we will not be the same people at the end of the service as we were at the beginning. All this we ask of you, our dear savior, Amen.” The pastor sits, and someone bolts from the front row to the piano and begins to play. The music we hear is familiar and at the same time new; the bandleader punches up a pre-programmed beat on the cheap electronic piano and plays a few Nigerian gospel songs to get us in the mood for revival. We sing along, though we have to wait a few moments at the beginning of each song to figure out what he’s playing. We sing joyful songs to the Lord, then songs of redemption, and then we sing songs of hope, hope that tomorrow...

Because on average, an American girl has ten Barbie dolls, a British or Italian girl may own seven, while five is the number of Barbie that a German or French girl has. It was Mattel’s purpose and will when introducing Barbie that she would become a lifestyle, a fashion statement, a way of life, something sacred more than just a doll. And in fact, she did! This plastic doll is worth being considered a legend, which can represent many statuses in the society regardless of gender, skin colour or classes, thus remaining attractive to different girls’ generations since its year of birth. ...Community Teaching Plan: Teaching Experience Paper Grand Canyon University: NRS-427V For my community teaching experience I chose to address a widespread need in my local and surrounding communities. This need is for more education regarding birth control options available for the young adult teenage population. The school districts in my county only require that sexual education be done once in the ninth grade and this class goes over the basics from menarche to sexual reproduction. However they only briefly describe birth control methods alluding to more of an abstinence stance. This brief description leaves many not understanding the way each type of birth control works allowing teens to incorrectly use each method, if they even use one at all. I will discuss my teaching plan and experience in the following paragraphs. Epidemiological Rationale According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) an unintended pregnancy is on that is either unwanted or mistimed which usually result from not using contraception or inconsistent or incorrect use of effective contraceptive methods. Among women aged 19 years and younger, more than 4 out of 5 pregnancies were unintended. The proportion of pregnancies that were unintended was highest among teenagers younger than age 15 years, at 98%. (CDC, 2012) With this education being taught in school at an age where students are already 14 or 15 years old we are doing a huge disservice to these teenagers. They...

...Kimberly Tucker, Chris Salt, Ashley Solomon Case 7: Mattel: Overcoming Marketing and Manufacturing Challenges 11/01/2010 Marketing Management 6800 Section 004 The Problem: The problem surrounding Mattel Inc., one of the world’s largest toy companies, is their mismanagement of international subcontractors and vendors and the production of certain toys (the manufacturing process), as well as their inability to adapt their marketing strategy or product to the constantly changing “demographic and socioeconomic trends” (Ferrell, et. all 466). This is supported by Mattel’s legal battle with Carter Bryant and MGA, their forced recall of certain toys that were manufactured overseas, and the increasing rate at which traditional toys are becoming less appealing to today’s young audience. Essentially, Mattel’s mismanagement and oversight lead to violations in terms of ethical and social responsibilities and safety standards. Issues Relevant to the Problem: Mattel’s problem of mismanagement can be divided into several issues that need to be considered: legal issues, international supply chain issues, and an increase in technology-based toys. In regards to legal issues, Mattel has been involved in prolonged litigation with Carter Bryant and MGA over a breach of an employment contract and copyright infringement. Due to Mattel’s poor management of its overseas manufacturers, in which unauthorized subcontractors and third-party suppliers were hired and unsafe materials used, several...

...person is focusing on something different, thinking of something different, and noticing something different. That is why every person has a story to tell, and it is why we can learn from every single person. And this essay is about my short autobiography, which can give you an indication of my personal story. I came into this world on the windy morning of October 15, 1990. I was born in Cua Viet, a small town in Vietnam. I am the 5th child among the 5 children of my parent. I grew up and spent almost my whole life in my country. Now, I am the second year student in Business Accounting- the 2 year program. I have been through many life-changing situations in past 3 years. These situations have had both positive and negative impacts to me. My goals from 5 years ago compare to my current goals are totally different. After finishing 12th grade, I just wanted to become a Mathematics teacher, so I went to Hue University and tried my best to achieve the goal. However, when I was the 2nd year student of the Hue University, I found that I was no longer interested in becoming a teacher. Hence, I dropped the school and wanted to get a better education in Canada and seek opportunities in accounting. Since then, my life has changed. On one hand, starting my new life in a strange country is so hard. When I just came, I faced many difficulties, such as the language, the weather and the life style. Firstly, language was a big matter when I first came. Speaking was one of the linguistic problems...
