My decision to pursue an MBA degree to further my career - Week-2
The slow down of the US economy has caused companies to start to down sizing, reducing their workforce by layoffs or closing down completely. The Information Technology is being hit twice as hard by not only the reduction of local positions due to the economy slow down but in addition, the lower cost of outsourcing (Computerworld Staff, Feb 22, 2010) . During a recent reduction in force evaluation by my current employer, I noticed that the employee’s education level was an assessed value, which added to the valuable points for retaining an employee. I decided that continuing my education would be a very important addition to resume, future reduction in force evaluations to maintain my current career or make me more valuable if I was out looking for a job.

Originally, I was interested in starting a Master of Science in Management (MSM) (Thomas Edison State College, 2010) to further advancement in my current career in Information Technology (IT) and potentially get into a IT Management position the program is offered strictly on-line. I have also started noticing a pattern of companies “outsourcing” information technology jobs to other countries for cost savings to the US companies and noticed the continued strong increase of revenue for the Outsourced Cognizant Technology Solutions (Ribeiro, Augu) . I decided that I needed to reconsider my educational plans and to look for a program, which would be needed by companies over the next 20 years or help me start my own business, if I lost my job. I decided to try the Masters in Business Administration with a concentration area of Global Management (University of Phoenix, 2010) , but found out that this program is only offered on-line. Knowing that I’m

...Decision to Pursue MBA Degree Dorothy Hall MGT/521-Management August 5, 2010 Professor John Quesnel Decision to Pursue MBA Degree Deciding to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. The master’s program is challenging and will take time from an individual’s personal life. An MBA can further a career, begin a new career, or fulfill a personal goal. In contemplating whether to obtain an MBA degree, I had to decide what value this degree would afford me. In obtaining this degree, it would further my education and could definitely be an asset to any future career choice that I may undertake when I retire from State Farm Insurance in a couple of years. In constructing and supporting this argument on whether to pursue an MBA, as a choice, I used the Jungian Personality Self-Assessment to foster insight into possible career paths and how other individuals perceive me. The self-assessment of the Jungian personality gives an individual through 16 personality types a better understanding of him or herself. The assessment measures thinking styles of individuals, modes of dealing with information and interactions for potential managers in group settings. My personality type was the INFP result that describes individuals reserved, creative, and highly idealistic with a possible career as an architect, journalist, educational consultant, missionary, actor, artist, and poet. I agreed with some...

Pursue an Mba Degree

...Decision to Pursue an MBA Degree Decision to pursue MBA Program is a first step to reach my personal goal and start a new career. After my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science I was offered a job as IT Administrator to a well-known organization and never had an opportunity to think about further education. The decision to obtain an MBA requires a substantial commitment of money and time. However, there are many compelling reasons to pursue an MBA to get ahead in the business world. Below are some of the lines of reasoning that I want to mention: MBAs are internationally recognized Travel to many areas of the world, and most people have at least heard of the graduate degree known as the MBA. This makes it much more valuable than many other business degrees. For example, even though a Master's in Commerce may be a prestigious degree in some countries; other locations may not be familiar with the program. Having an MBA, which is recognized almost universally, will increase my ability to compete for jobs in more locations. MBAs can earn higher salaries One of the major reasons, as I have chosen to pursue an MBA is that it often allows graduates to earn a greater salary. Although the average starting salary for MBA graduates is influenced by the number of years of work experience they have prior to starting their degree, even those with fewer than three years of industry experience reportedly start out earning close to $70,000. This figure rises dramatically as graduates...

There are many different career paths where an MBA will get you further and open more doors than a candidate job seeker without. I became interested in moving into a management role after working for several years in technical roles in the administrative field. After deciding further education was necessary I invested 3 years of my time in obtaining a Bachelors degree in Management. After completing this program it was time to look at where I wanted to go. In preparation for considering the options available to me, earning an MBA degree just seemed to make sense. I had previously set a personal goal to switch career paths and work as a manager for a high tech company. I believe a MBA is the key to putting me...

According to a peer reviewed journal article, “There's strong evidence that earning an executive MBA can boost your career. Last year, 43% of students enrolled in executive MBA programs received promotions, up from 34% in 2004, according to the Executive MBA Council” (Beau, (2007, April 23). Why an Mba

...Why an MBA University of Phoenix MGT/521 May 31, 2010 I could not decide if I wanted to go after my Master’s in Business Administration, or just stop at my bachelor’s degree. It took me 26 years to decide to go back to school to pursue my AA in Accounting, despite all the pressures, and pushing that I had received from my parents and my family members. So in 2006 I decided that it was time, I looked around to a variety of different colleges and decided that I wanted to attend University of Phoenix Online because I did not want to deal with going to classes, instead I preferred to stay home and be comfortable. After my associates in accounting I decided that because I could still not find a permanent job, I would go ahead and pursue my bachelors of arts in accounting as well. When I was in my last class of my bachelor’s degree, I was toying around with going after my master’s in business administration, and then what will I specialize in. I had been looking for jobs for quite some times on the Internet and in the papers for quite some time and have been sending out hundreds of resumes and have received no responses. I figured that if I went for a master’s degree it would open many more doors in the future. It was a tough decision on whether I wanted to pursue that master’s in business, after all I had been going to school now for the past four years, or if I should just stop at my bachelor’s degree and look for a job. It turned out that finding a job was not working out...

...Support an Argument Paper Jonathan Ray Santos University of Phoenix MGT/521 October 5, 2010 The purpose of this paper is to construct and support an argument on the decision I made to pursue a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) degree to further my career as the head of IT. With today’s society, it is easy to find a subject controversial. The paper will elaborate at the benefits of undertaking MBA program with an emphasis in business management and IT analysis. An argument is an oral disagreement, a verbal opposition or even an altercation. Some may say that it is a discussion involving differing points of view. In the corporate world, debates run rampant on our culture and can be viewed as a constructional tool to improve, advance a roadblock, or the source of a company’s failure. So as a start, referencing the Jungian 16-type personality assessment was the first step. I scored ENFP and agree with the decision. According to the Jungian Assessment, those with the ENFP score are better in business analyst roles and tend to be conscientiousness and critical in the decision making process (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007). Having a very independent and stubborn nature in both my work and personal life I believe the Jungian 16-type personality assessment supports my decision to further my education and enter the critical field of information technology. The personality assessment specifies that I am extroverted, intuitive, thinker, and judging. I agree with...

Mba Argument

...The decision to pursue my MBA degree was never a difficult one. When I first entered the business world in 1994 I soon knew that in order for me to achieve my personal and professional goals in life further education was going to be necessary. However, I did not think it would have taken me seventeen years to begin my journey to accomplish this goal. So far in my professional life, I would consider myself to be a success. I have worked for three companies since receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in 1994 in two different industries. I have earned accolades and awards for sales and marketing performance from all three companies and I have been told that I am seen as a leader with potential for upward mobility. After taking the Jungian 16-Type Personality test, I received a score of ISFJ. This fits right in line with my past work experience because this test shows that I am loyal and willing to make sacrifices for the greater good. I was surprised to find I was introverted because typically successful sales people are extroverts. They reach out to clients and look for ways to connect with people where introverts mostly keep to themselves. However, during the last few years my personal job satisfaction has been low and the pharmaceutical sales industry has been enduring massive layoffs (Brice, 2009). Although, my current company is somewhat “bucking the trend” regarding reducing sales force sizes, I believe that all companies are not immune to the trend. So, the...
