In my work as a Family Advocate, I work with families on the daily basis. I feel I have confidence and control while talking with family. The family beliefs that I have the knowledge to assist them when they come to me to ask for information. I am excited to talk to them because I want to help them. I want to explain the details so they understand what they need to do. I am speaking my mind without hesitation because I know I have some power to people to make them do what I want. When working within a hierarchical structure, the power balance is uneven because of the relationship between superiors and subordinates. Because I have the authority, I use power over to get them follow my expectations and rules. The communication is easier to convey my message. They obey and listen. As part of our culture, children obey their parents. My family communication was a downward way. Talking to my mother or any adult was difficult because they have the power over me. Growing up, I was a quiet and s soft-spoken kid. I was always afraid to speak because I was afraid to say the wrong things. The power was changed as I became an adult, but still I cannot talk rude or disrespect. In general when I talk to elderly, I have to watch my language because my expressions and verbal show a lack of courtesy and respectful. I was afraid of people may judge my family. Therefore, I always pay attention to what I say and what not appropriate to say. In the relationship with spouse and close friends, we have equal power. It is a two ways open communication. I feel comfortable and relax expressing my feelings. I am free from self-consciousness when talking to them. I know that there are no judgmental, but we learn from each other from our communication. It is depending on the circumstances and the level of trust can affect our communication in a variety ways. We may feel fearful and intimidated when we have less power. It changes the way we think and act. We may not fully express ourselves. We may feel uncertainty, passiveness and doubt; therefore, we may seek approval and validation from others. Having power, it gives us the confidence and raises your self-esteem. We would communicate with dominant voices to express the leadership and assertiveness. When we have greater power, we may be overused the power to our advantage. In that case, we may more likely to make assumptions and to set the agenda. We may not acknowledge or unaware of others’ feelings and opinions. We are more comfortable and completely honest where the power is a balance.
