...I am writing this statement in hopes of getting into the criminal justice master’s program. I was informed that to be accepted into the program that one would have to obtain a GPA of a 2.7. However I finished my undergraduate degree with a 2.69. I know that my GPA falls short of the required GPA to be accepted but if given the chance to prove myself I know that this time around I can be successful in achieving a satisfactory average. At the beginning of my attendance at south I had some life challenges that held me back a bit but I have since step up my average in my latest quarters as my situation became a little bit better. I am going to do everything in my power to not let stressful situations deter me from averaging the required GPA...

...paper is a mixture of facts, inferences and extrapolations, based on my personal experience as an admissions committee member at Stanford. All views expressed here are solely mine and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of Stanford University. 1. Introduction In this paper, I outline the various parameters involved in the complex decision making process of a Masters admissions committee in a top graduate school in the US. To clarify this further, (i) This report is mainly targeted at MS applicants, but a lot of it can be extended to PhD applications as well. In most cases, the requirements for a PhD admit will just be a stricter version of those mentioned here. (ii) I do not have a specific list of universities in mind when I say "a top graduate school". Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley and CMU are certainly up there, but I am not particularly referring to any specific list of graduate school rankings. In a more general sense, I am talking about schools where the default attitude of the admissions committee is "rejected, unless strongly proved otherwise" rather than "let's give him/her the benefit of the doubt". These schools tend to follow a risk minimization policy, and if in doubt, they would reject the candidate rather than risk diluting the quality of the incoming batch. (iii) The content here is targeted only at the applicants to US universities. Though some of it might be the same, I have no personal experience regarding the admission...

...What is Personal Statement Overview of the Personal Statement Personal statements are sometimes also called "application essays" or "statements of purpose." Whatever they are called, they are essentially essays which are written in response to a question or questions on a graduate or professional school application form which asks for some sort of sustained response. Some applications ask more specific questions than others. There is no set formula to follow in shaping your response, only choices for you to make, such as whether you should write an essay that is more autobiographically focused or one that is more professionally focused. From application to application, requested personal statements also vary widely in length, ranging from a couple of paragraphs to a series of essays of a page or so each. Personal statements are most important when you are applying to an extremely competitive program, where all the applicants have high test scores and GPA's, and when you are a marginal candidate and need the essay to compensate for low test scores or a low GPA. :: Context Considerations How are personal statements read, and by whom? It's most likely that your personal statement will be read by professors who serve on an admissions committee in the department to which you are applying. It is important in developing your personal statement to carefully consider this audience. What are the areas of specialty of this department, and what might it be looking for in a graduate...

...Personal Responsibility And College Success “The price of greatness is responsibility” (Winston Churchill). I believe this statement by Winston Churchill adequately describes the art to great success and high quality achievements. Personal responsibility is greatly intertwined with college success. The path to college success starts and ends with holding oneself responsible and accountable. Knowing one's strengths and weakness can assist one in navigating down that path of college success, leading to the achievement of the set out goals. It has been about ten years since I have been in college. Although I could look at this long drought as a disadvantage, after much thoughtfulness I have realized that in these last ten years I have gained much personal experience and a plethora of skills and attitudes that will only aid me in achieving the victory I not only desire but demand of myself. Personal responsibility means that I am solely responsible for establishing my own goals, pinpointing my strengths and weaknesses and holding myself accountable to a set standard and process that will ultimately accomplish those goals. Personal responsibility begins with a set of goals. It is vital that a person has vision and clarity within that vision. One should know clearly what they desire for their future and understand the options in achieving their goals. Establishing both short term and long term goals are essential in achieving success in college. According to the desires I have...

...Personal Purpose Statement and Growth Mindset The first class of Managing Work and Teams was the first time I was ever introduced to the idea of the entity theory vs. the incremental theory. Reading Yeager’s article gave me the opportunity to question my own mindset. I saw myself fitting into both a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, but I immediately knew I wanted to adapt a stronger growth mindset because I wanted to learn from my setbacks and improve for the future (Yeager, 303). Enrolling in the Commerce program was embarking on a challenging adventure for me. I knew I would be placed in uncomfortable situations and have to step outside my comfort to learn from mistakes and try new approaches to problems. I will balance my work in this demanding program by preserving the passions I came to this school with. My undying love for songwriting, musical performances, and theatre have been retained as I play guitar and sing at least an hour a day and I’ve reached out to various drama clubs for opportunities. All academic and...
