I remembered when I went to the lake with my cousin and we had lots of fun doing a lots of different random stuff and we found a tree frog like and actual tree frog from the jungle we found it stuck to the side of the camp building. and then I picked it up off the wall for my little cousin that was with us walking around and then I gave it to her and she was looking at the frog and she said why are the hands of the frog like that and I said so it can climb trees and get its hard to find food that it hunts then we put it back on the side of the building and we went to the campsite again and when we got there it was lunch time for the nyes at the lake. then after lunch my uncle wanted me to go with him to get some firewood with my cousins and my brother so we did and then we were just about to give up because we couldn't find anything to use as firewood and then we saw a campsite back in the trees and there was no one there and the weeds were growing up all around it.

Comparing Finishing School And Malcolm X's Homemade Education

...As a child I grew up very rebellious, having a twin sister that was even wilder than me did not make it much easier on my parents, I am sure they wanted to pull their hair out right from the root after all the hell we raised together. We got into trouble any and everywhere, you name it. Nora and I even once were convinced that our neighbor was a murder and snuck around her house for weeks causing trouble and trying to find clues. Starting at a very young age, some may even say birth, Nora and I had our own agenda for things; our own rule book to life. Nora and I payed no mind to rules and eventually that ended up catching up to us. Sometimes it takes a bad experience to really learn a lesson, like in Maya Angelou's “Finishing School” and Malcolm X’s “Homemade Education” If Malcolm X had not gone to prison and Maya Angelou had not had her experience with Mrs. Cullinan, they would not be the people they became....

Plastic Pollution In Australia

...Introduction Plastic water pollution is a national issue that needs to continue to be addressed in Australia and around the world. Although Australia’s waters are not the most polluted in the world our waters are being affected significantly by plastic pollution. Below I have addressed the main causes of plastic water pollution in Australia. The repercussions of plastic pollution on wildlife and humans have also been discussed. The sustainable volunteer work I participated in was picking up litter from two of Canberra’s lakes. There were many positive qualities of this volunteering experience including helping the environment by reducing pollution and recycling items. On a personal note it was also a great way for me to spend time outdoors...

Title

...There's something very calming about looking out over a tranquil lake, its surface as smooth as glass, reflecting the beautiful summer sky. The sounds of the splashing waves against the shore provide no better cure for insomnia. These are exactly the things I experience when at "the lake." The serenity and peacefulness of the area is unmatched by any other. That, coupled with the laughter, love and fun displayed by the numerous family and friends that claim the area as their beloved hide-away from the world, makes it the special place it is to me. If someone asked me to relate my idea of a perfect vacation, it would be everything that the lake has to offer. To walk along the sandy beach, and feel the wet sand soft and moist between my toes is better than any massage or treatment for the travel-weary soles of my feet. Small squirrels and chipmunks play tag through the lofty treetops, flitting from tree to tree all the while announcing their irritation at each other with little chirps and squeaks. The Deer of the fields bring their babies out to run themselves to exhaustion and watch us carefully should we make any wrong moves. It is very much a family retreat, where a large number of familiar faces flock in the summer time to enjoy these things, and many more in the lake itself. The cool waters of the lake provide something everyone can enjoy. Whether it's the for older folks relaxing on the docks, getting their feet just wet enough to enjoy the refreshing temperature, or the...

Enriquillo Lake Research Paper

...Lesson2 assignment Pedro Mendez The Enriquillo Lake A memorable and well known place that came across my mind is the Enriquillo Lake (Spanish: Lago Enriquillo) is a hyper saline lake in the Dominican Republic located in the southwestern region of the Country where I spent most of my remarkable childhood time a while ago. The Lake has an area of 265 square kilometers (102 sq mi) and a depth of up to 29 meters and has a water level almost 40 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point in the Caribbean. Its watercourse is shared between the provinces of Bahoruco and Independencia, bordering the Haiti coast. Additionally a 60km road circles the Lake and driving around this perimeter makes a pleasant way to experience this Dominican Republic attraction. The largest landlocked water body in the Caribbean, surrounded by semi-arid vegetation, a wide variety of reptiles and its beautiful concentric island “Islas Cabritos”, makes Enriquillo Lake an exotic and picturesque place recognized as one of the key ecological tourist attractions in the Caribbean country....

Maya

...In the essays “On Going Home” by Joan Didions and “Once more to the Lake” written by E.B Whites are two authors dealing with their personal issues as they compares and contrasts they current life and past, which are vastly different. The way they uses description in this essays and the flow of events is very similar to the way that memories rush in when one returns to a familiar place from one’s past To descript is to portray or re-create a scene, a person, a place or a feeling. Description is an important skill in communication between people, and it appears in most of the writing situation. An effective description requires a dominant impression; a central theme or idea about the subject to which readers can relate all the details. Joan Didions and E.B Whites uses description effectively in “On Going Home” and “Once More to the Lake”. “On Going Home” Didion describes her experiences and thoughts on what defines her meaning of home. Joan Didion begins her story by illustrating what "home" is to her. She describes how her home now is not the place where her husband and daughter live, but in the Central Valley of California with her family. With this introduction, one can sense that she is troubled by the differences between the two. Didion stated “My husband likes my family but is uneasy in their house, because once there I fall into their ways, which are difficult, oblique, deliberately inarticulate, not my husband’s ways” (pg1). This allows the reader to see a side of Joan's...

La Llorana Analysis

...in a predominately Mexican community, La Llorana is the most popular folk tale ever. It has been portrayed in paintings, movies, books, etc. This story has been used to scare children from going out late at night and to prevent them from doing anything they are not supposed to be doing. My first-hand experiences are few to none on this story, but I have been told stories by my parents and grandparents. As a child, I was told the story of La Llorana from a very early age. Growing Up In T. C. Boyle's Greasy Lake

...In an interview on “Greasy Lake”, the author, T.C. Boyle, talks about how and why he wrote this particular type of story. Growing up in New York, there was a lake quite like the one mentioned in the tale that Boyle referenced tucked away in the woods of New York. For this lake to have such a lasting impression on the author, it must have been a pretty special place. The narrator is a character one could relate to as well; how strong he is, how terrified he was in that icy cold lake, the reader could easily relate to and connect to him. During the interview, Boyle makes many connections between the characters and situations in the story to real life experiences and emotions. From the time the narrator first introduced Greasy Lake to when the characters drove away after almost being killed, there was one point that was the pinnacle of the story....

Ghost Story

...quality time with family and friends. Because of the close proximity to New York City, trains were filled with people constantly coming and going. Greenwood Lake was an interstate lake, lying in both New Jersey and New York State. During the resort era, several steamboats operated on the lake and they would meet the trains and take passengers to various resorts around the water in both states. After World War II and till this day, the area went under major renovations to change from a resort area to year round residences. A fellow friend of mine and resident of Bergen County was kind enough to share her experiences with the supernatural, all which occurred right under her own roof. It is not surprising that an area with so much history and life would generate ghostly phenomena. What makes this ghost story so interesting is that it is so unexpected. Sitting on a cold bench, right before practice, I figured I would ask around to see if anyone had any good ghost stories to tell. Little did I know that I would find one that would send chills down my spine. As the oldest sibling growing up in their two story house in Bergen county, Dana remembers a lot of her childhood as well as her brothers, who is only a couple of years younger. She made known that her house was in fact a vacation home that had the luxury of having the lake right in the backyard. It is a two-story house and after moving in they decided to put on addition. Prior to the addition and back when it was just a vacation...

Personal Narrative: My Experience In Upstate New York

...For four weeks this summer I lived in a place so different from my home that I questioned whether I was truly in the same state. I was one of four interns dispatched to Upstate New York to live, work, and play. It was a genuinely interesting experience for three reasons. The first is that I had never been apart from my mother for such a long period of time. The second is that I had never had a paying job before. The third is that I had never lived with strangers in a cabin in the woods before (and by the rules of horror movies I should not be able to write this essay). Out of all of the great experiences I had while I was working Upstate the best experience I had was a day where we didn’t actually do work. I put on the standard khakis, t-shirt,...

In The Lake Of The Woods Analysis

...Snyder 1 How would you deal with the sight of seeing your friends die? In the Lake of the Woods Tim O’brien uses the character John Wade’s flashbacks of traumatic events to convey the physiological damage of the Vietnam war. In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O'Brien is a novel that shows the way the Vietnam War still holds a grip on the American psyche and some of the reasons why this is so. The novel discusses issues that are reflected in other literature, both fictional and nonfictional, regarding the war and its effect on those who had to fight it. (Edar) The My Lai massacre is not representative of American actions in the war, but it does hold a particular place in the effect that war had on those at home, a public that was horrified at some...

Greasy Trenches

...Professor Patten ENGS013 – Intro to Fiction Greasy Trenches Who, what, when, where, and why? We find ourselves asking these questions, constantly pondering life, piecing together the puzzle of our experiences, which in part allows us to remember the answers. Our association with “where” an experience happened or took place is often the best wake-up call. If one is able to recall the setting, one can usually evoke the whole experience. In “Greasy Lake,” by T. C. Boyle and “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien, we learn just how monumental the setting of an experience can be, especially in a short story. Drawing comparisons between each story will allow the reader to delve even deeper into the importance of setting. Now it is obvious that a story that revolves around a lake that adolescents ravage and the jungles of Vietnam in the heat of the war are nowhere near similar, but they are. Boyle and O’Brien both create magnificent settings, but they differ in the techniques they use to tell their remarkable stories. Both stories rely heavily on setting and we look to the development of characters in those settings and the influence of setting on plot, to illustrate the differences and similarities between the two, which in the end exemplify brilliant short stories. In “Greasy Lake,” the reader is immediately immersed into the story of three foolish kids up to no good, heading to a secret spot in town. Boyle presents us with this spot without hesitation: “the Indians had called...
