...13 January 2014 Hilary Johnson- Lutz Abstract There are many times in my life that I have had to make executive decisions to make certain changes in my life. One change in particular that I have had to embrace recently is changing my job. There were many decisions made in this big change, it took a lot of thought, planning, and the weighing of pros and cons. In this paper I have decided to go into depth about this change, which led to many differences in my everyday life. Management Theory & Practice Recently I had to make some big decisions about changing my job from one career to another, from one city to another. I had to make the decision based on many factors. First I began looking for another job, I was trying to decide how far away from home to search, what field I want to work in, what salary I was willing to take, really, what will make me happy in all aspects. First, I had to decide how far I was willing to commute. Time is huge for me, and I wanted to make sure it made sense, as I was working 5 minutes from home with my job at the time. But I just wasn’t happy. So I set out to find a job within a reasonable distance from my house. I started looking into staffing agencies, and doing my own search for a job. I came along an interesting job, something I thought I might enjoy, and the salary was about right for me, the only problem was that I could not get over that my commute to work would go from 5 minutes to half an hour on a good day. So I had...

...In 2006 I was face with making a major decision in my family’s life and changing it as they knew it. Like in the reading this week I had to go through the decision making of what I had to do to make changes and if they are what is best for me and my family. My wife and I have been working in the family business for 14 years and we were working 7 days a week, was this what I wanted for the rest of my life or my family’s life…No, that being said, I identified and diagnosed the problem I was facing. I worked on many alternative solutions, like hiring more help at my passion, changing hours, and lastly a different profession. But after evaluating the alternatives there was no way that I could change the hours, also there was no way that addition people could not be hired, which left the changing in professions. This is when I made the choice to look for a new job, but they were hard to come by in my rural area. I would start looking for a job in my area and also out of the state. I found a position in Atlanta GA and then the big part of this decision was moving my family away from the only life they ever knew. My wife and children have never left Pennsylvania for more than a week in there whole life. We packed and moved 800 miles and after 6 years and looking back it was one of the best decisions that I have...

...Decision- Making Process Makesia Penny MGT 230 July 16, 2012 Millicent B. Lann Throughout life people will have to make many decisions. Some of these decisions will be easy, some will be difficult. Some decisions we make in life require little or no thought, but the more important decisions, life-changing decisions, require a lot of thought. For instance, we make decisions about what we wear every day, what we will have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, what time we go to bed each night and what time are we going to get up in the morning. These decisions do not take a process to come to the conclusion of what we will do. We sometimes have to make decisions that can be life-changing decisions. These decisions will affect our lives in a big way. Some examples could be buying a new home, changing jobs, enrolling in school, or relocating to another state. For me, it was enrolling in school. I graduated high school in 1996. I did not attend college after high school like most children because I had a baby my senior year. My grandparents suggested that I go ahead to school but I refused because I did not want to leave my son. In 2004, I enrolled in our local Technical College. I attended school for a year before I was involved in an incident that almost claimed my life in May 2005. I did not go back to school after the incident because I had to take physical therapy and was dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). When I could return to work I was on work restriction...

...Decision Making People are faced with certain situations in their lives where they need to make decisions (Deepa, Kartha). Decisions are defined as a process of choosing a course of action to deal with a problem or opportunity (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, and Uhl-Bien; 2010). Decision making is not something that people need to take lightly; these decisions will affect a person for the rest of his or her life. Steps to Decision Making When making decisions people can follow five steps that will help in the process of making the final decision. The steps are recognizing and defining the problem or opportunity, analyze alternatives, make a choice, take action, and evaluate the results (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, and Uhl-Bien; 2010). The first step of recognizing and defining the problem, this means looking at the problem. No decision needs to be made if there is no problem (Deepa, Kartha). In my life a recent decision I had to make was whether or not to take a new job where I would receive less pay, or stay at the job I was currently at and miserable. The job I was miserable at was at a daycare, where I worked nine to 10 hours a day, and only got paid for eight. I was shown no respect, and did not receive the training I needed with my promotion. The job I was offered was at a dental office where the team is smaller so they get along, the hours are better, but the pay was less. I have defined the problem; it is time for the next step, which is looking at other alternative...

...Decision Making Process Alethea Tillman MGT/230 February 9, 2015 Sylvester Taylor Decision Making Process As many other people who have either been forced to do, or upon their own will have done, I have made many life changing decisions in my personal and professional life. My decisions came at a time prior to learning about the decisions making process explained in Chapter 3 of Management: Leading & Collaborating in a competitive world which are (1) identify and diagnose the problem, (2) generate alternative solutions, (3) evaluate alternatives, (4) make the choices, (5) implementing the decisions, and (6) evaluate the decision (Bateman & Neel, 20011, Chapter 3). Although the majority of my decisions have come before I was exposed to the teaching in the text regarding decision-making, my processes at times have been very similar. My Decision and Process In 2001, I was a cosmetologist working in a local unisex beauty salon when my husband and I discovered I was pregnant with our first child. The newly discovered addition to the family caused me to reflect on the stability of my current career in reference to a steady income, health insurance, and other benefits I did not have at the moment and would need in the future. I began to explore the probability of my success if I remained in the beauty industry I was in and what my current options were to obtain the stability I needed to care for a child. I also looked outside of my profession into other...

...Pursuing an MBA Advantages and Disadvantages of Pursing an MBA The decision to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration is a difficult, personal decision. In fact, I categorize it as a life changing decision. For instance, this decision is like most major decisions people make. Whether the decision is over buying a home, changing careers, starting a family or buying that dream car, it is usually laced with advantages and disadvantages, pros and cons, and benefits and consequences. Whether or not those advantages and disadvantages are tangible, quantifiable and measurable, most would agree that they exist and they sometimes have life changing affects. For example, some people think that it is a disadvantage to buy a home because it usually results in one securing a long-term loan whereby a monetary commitment is required from the borrower or homeowner. If this commitment is broken or one is unable to pay as agreed, the borrower or homeowner can lose valuable assets, seriously hinder their ability to borrow money in the future and be looked upon by the banking and financial community as a liability or risk. On the other hand, or some of the advantages of buying a home may result in credit worthiness, proves that you are trustworthy, disciplined and according to Weintrub (2010), “gives one a sense of pride in ownership, stability and security” (para. 2.). With the above mention in mind, I will explore my personal advantages and disadvantages that I discovered when attempting...

...LIFE CHANGING DECISION MGT/230 Life Changing Decision In August of 2001 I made s decision that would change my life forever. Because of some of the choices I had made in the past and the future not looking as good, I decided to leave my home town of Nacogdoches and move to Houston. I based my decision clearly on the facts of doing better in life and becoming another statistic. Being from a small town trouble became very easy to get into so, I decided to remove myself from all elements of the situation and move to Houston to begin a fresh new life. My move was actually rushed and not planned. I had a brother that lived here and suggested I move here for all the work opportunities. I did not have any money saved nor did I have a solid plan of what I was going to do once I got to Houston. I was only driven by the fact I was getting out of Nacogdoches and was starting over fresh. Once here I encountered many difficult obstacles that I had no idea how to manage for less fix. Even though I had my brother here; I was pretty much on my own and left to find my own path to success. My brother had offered me a foundation but it was left up to me build my home. It only took me one day and I found a job and was on my way to great accomplishments. Once I begin to work and get that true since of independence, I begin to reach for more. I enrolled in school and begin educating myself to a whole different side of life. ...Running head: CHANGING OUR LIVES “Changing Our Lives” Strayer University ENG 090- Fundamental Writing November 13, 2013 CHANGING OUR LIVES A Meaningful Journey Making this decision to attend college to obtain a degree was a battle of thoughts in my mind. The question of being forty-two years of age pondering if I was too old to fulfill this passion, thinking time has passed me by. I feared starting something that I would not complete, just like all the other projects or goals that are still parked on the sideline. The people and examples that I heedfully looked up to were on shaky grounds until one day, I had a breakthrough. When my husband and I moved into our new home I meet my neighbor who encouraged me and is a candidate of a life with a degree. The timing was right, because what I feared in the past, I was now ready to push forward for a future, and enrolling in Strayer University is the best decision I ever made in life. Secondly, the world today dictates strengthens and weaknesses, either you are going to strive for the best or settle for less. ...Decision-Making Process Paper Identify a time in your life when you had to make a personal or professional decision, such as buying a home, changing jobs, enrolling in school, or relocating to another state or region. Describe each step of your process. About a year ago I decided that I want to relocate to another state which will mean that I will have to change jobs, my kids will be changing schools, and they will not be in the same state as their fathers. I made this decision because I felt that I could go further in my career and make a better life for myself and my kids. I’m choosing to move next year because my youngest son will be graduating high school and I want to be here for his senior year. I’ve also thought about if my younger daughters do not want to go I would ask their father’s if they could stay with them, but I do not think that will be a good idea. How similar was your decision-making process to the one described in the text? My decision-making process is very close to the text the text says to identify and diagnose the problem, generate alternative solutions, evaluate alternatives, make the choice, implement the decision, and evaluate the decision. I have feel that I have done all except generate an alternate solution. How might your decision be different if you had used the same steps included in the text? I would have a better plan for my daughters in the event they not wanting to come with me. Possibly speak with their father’s about the girls...

...Making An Important Decision Assignment: Describe a particular time in your life when you had difficulty making an important decision. During the course of our lifetimes we make many significant and difficult choices that affect us. These choices affect our personal and professional lives. Therefore, we make these choices with much thought and care. One of the most difficult and important decisions I have made was changing careers. Changing careers at this stage of my life, mid-life, was very difficult. Preparation for my new career required me to resign my job. The former position was providing a major portion of my family's income and most of the medical benefits. Some means of earning a living while preparing for a new career was foremost on my mind during this stage. If I spent to much time and energy pursuing a job to provide a means for supporting my family while retraining, I might not do a sufficient job of retraining for a new career. Another difficulty equally as important as the the financial one was the possibility of failing at a new endeavor or not being able to find a new job. These possibilities made me feel uncomfortable and insecure. If I failed or could not find a new position, what would my family think of me? Failing at a new career would also cause me to lose confidence in myself. These concerns, failure and financial, and not finding a new job made this decision very difficult. The decision to choose a new career...

...interaction with others. They are opinions, beliefs, perceptions, assumptions, values and truths. Mental models are often hidden and one is not aware of them or their effect on one’s behavior. When mental models are created they become reinforced in the mind and it becomes hard to change them (Von Stamm, 2008). Vernon and Bud have been in this company for more than twenty years, thus there mental models are deeply rooted and difficult to change. It is hard to convince both of them to change their mental models or adopt new ones. The mental models that these two coworkers have impacted greatly on how they behave in the company and the decisions they make. Vernon is afraid of the expansion and Bud is against competing with other organizations. Changing Mental Model/Mindsets In any organization, change is constant, hence the need to keep changing mental models of employees. It is hard to change mental models since they are not forces that one is aware of consciously, but subconsciously. Vernon and Bud are against the new change that has been introduced by the new owners of the company. However, from time to time people must be willing to change for the good of the business even if they have the fear of the unknown (Rowe, 2004). People can take certain steps to change their mental models so as to improve on the quality of their performance. The first step is about understanding the limits and the power of mental models. ...PERSONALITY There are many different theories of personality; the first step is to understand exactly what is meant by the term personality. A brief definition would be that personality is made up of the characteristics pattern of thought, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique. Besides this, personality arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life. “Generally speaking personality refers to the unique core set of characteristics that influence the way one thinks, act, and feels” (Licht, Hull, & Ballantyne, 2014, p.467). After visiting the 41 question personality website, my overall personality profile was fantastic, real, and true. My results show that I am warm-hearted, popular and conscientious. The assessment further reveals that I tend to put the need of others over mine, I feel a strong sense of responsibility and duty, value traditions, and security, and interested in serving others. However, I need positive reinforcement to feel good about myself, well-developed sense of space, and function. My four different dimensions of personality are extroversion (E) vs. introversion (I), sensing(S) vs intuitive (I), thinking (T) vs feeling (F), and judging (J) vs perceiving (P). Extroversion tends to manifest as outgoing, talkative, and energetic behavior, whereas introversion is manifest as more reserved and solitary behavior. According to (Licht, Hull, & Ballantyne, 2014), “extroversion dimension tends to display a marked degree...
