My Interest in Native American Literature “I am Americanized but I am not American. No, I am not American by today’s cultural standards.” This thought is one I have echo through my mind frequently. I am an immigrant from Central America born to parents of African and Arawak descent. I feel my otherness so strongly when I am around people born and raised in the United States. My reasons for enrolling in this course are primarily and unapologetically selfish. This is my attempt at better understanding my ancestry so that I can better explain who I am in the world to the world and to myself. I follow traditions that I do not understand the origins of. I hear my mother speak (in what should be and what once was) my native tongue but cannot comprehend. While the English language feels familiar it does not feel mine. My ignorance about the Arawak culture and traditions kills any meaning that these rituals may have. I am here because that ignorance makes me uncomfortable. I stated earlier that I wanted to be able to explain who I am to the world but I also want to understand the world that I live in better. As a person who believes in in social justice and tolerance it is crucial to learn about the Natives of the Americas. It is important to acknowledge history no matter how painful and uncomfortable it may be to better orient myself from both cultural and geographic standpoint. I cannot think of better way to accomplish this than by submerging myself in the writings of Native American writers. Up until now, any Native American history that I have learned has been filtered through non-Native American authors/historians, taught by teachers of European descent from textbooks provided by modern American companies. I look forward to separating truth from fiction and hearing vivid accounts from those qualified to

ATV Accident Analysis

...four-wheeler cut my head wide open and all I could think was I am dying. Once I arrived at the hospital the nurses talked with my parents to gather information that led to my accident. After assessing the situation that was going on they took me back to have multiple CT scans and X Rays to visualize the extent of the damage. While going into X Ray I remember seeing the radiation sign on the door and I thought they was going to kill me. I began to scream at the top of my lungs scaring the nurses causing them to run and figure out what was wrong. I told them...

Descriptive Essay: The State High Kick Tournament

...enough to spend my entire day in the overly crowded, broiling Target Center. Sounds pretty romantic, right? However, the State High Kick Tournament took place on this lovely day. From sunrise until sunset I was dancing my heart out with my teammates and it was finally time to get what we deserved. After dancing finals, six teams lined up and filled the Target Center floor, each team saw how much pride every dancer had when their hard work paid off, and the SSDT got to experience the best feeling in the entire world. It was time. Our team lined up in alphabetical order while we were waiting outside the shoot for our team name to be called. We had come out in first place in the preliminary competition, but...

The one man that held my attention was Kyle, his grey eyes glared into mine filled with something sinfully dark I found myself gulping, his lips curled into a cruel smile and he scoffed before looking away. "Gimme ten minutes sweetheart. I'll be out soon just buy some food. Its on me!" Yes. I was starving. "You are darling Chuck! I'd marry you if I could!" I yelled back already hopping towards the phone on the counter. I called my favourite Kebab House and ordered a donner kebab. "You want anything Chuck?" I was well aware of the boys staring at me, there eyes trailing over my low cut, off shoulder crop jumper to my camel skort and then to my lace stockings down to my heeled sandals. My tattoes peaked out of the hem of my skirt, and I pulled off my gloves revealing the trbial marks tattoed on my hands. Foot Massage

...feel amazement. A smoothing Chinese foot massage is one of the alternative methods which can be treated as a physical treatment to make people feel relaxation and decrease their body pain. Traditional Chinese foot massage consists of a foot bath followed by an intense massage on different pressure points in the feet, ankles and legs. Chinese foot massage has been practiced for centuries and it is popular in China. Both ancient Chinese books and modern medical texts mention the effect of foot massage which has been extensively used in treatment for medical symptoms, for example, arthritis, back, neck, and shoulder pain. It is also recommended by physiotherapists in China. Even the feeling of a traditional Chinese foot massage may differ, it basically begins with soaking the feet in hot water adding tea and herbs. During the feet soaking, the therapist massages a person’s shoulders, back and neck for 10 to 15 minutes. After that, the feet are removed from the water and the person is transferred to a comfortable chair where the therapist is ready to work. The therapist uses cream or lotion on the foot and then rubs, pushes and massages pressure points on the bottom, top, and sides of the foot. The foot massage is often painful, particularly for first timers because it is believed that each part of the foot is connected to a part of the body. If pain is felt in a particular part of the foot, it is believed the corresponding part of the body has a problem. So far, foot massage is welcomed...

Peyton Manning Research Paper

...In life, there will be setbacks but for every setback that happens, there is an opportunity for a comeback. One comeback story that I’ve heard about is Peyton Manning and his neck injury. After a neck surgery in 2011, Manning started to lose motion in his neck and started to lose strength in his shoulder. It was revealed after a visit to the doctor that he needed a spinal fusion surgery. The doctors said that that the surgery could end his football career. This surgery caused Manning to miss the entire 2011 NFL season. Manning was lucky enough that the injury did not cause him to miss him the following season, but a new setback occurred. On March 7,2012, Peyton Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts, this sent shockwaves across the league. Now, according to most, the most coveted free agent of the 2012 Free Agency, signed with the Denver Broncos. John Elway even allowed Manning to wear the number 18 even after it was retired. Peyton proceeded to play in the 2012 season after being cleared by doctors. The 2012 was a successful season as he made his twelfth pro bowl by silencing his critics and playing lights out. He lead the Broncos to the second round of the playoffs, which they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champions. To represent how successful his comeback was that year, he was awarded the AP Comeback player of the year. In 2013, he had an even more...

Taped Confession

...six week tour of the Volga region of Russia, which also consisted of a three week cruise of the Volga River. After the cruise, the ship docked in Moscow and then the students were to board a train to go to St. Petersburg. While on the cruise, my bunk mate was the professor. Because this was in June, White Nights was in effect and as a result, it was quite difficult to get to sleep. Every night, the professor would talk about his walk-man and how lucky he was to have one to go to sleep with at night. We had a great relationship, so I would tell him that he might wake up dead and his walk-man stolen because he made fun of me not having one! I also was his teaching assistant, so we would often joke with each other about death threats. So this threat was nothing to be alarmed with. Finally, after three weeks of dealing with the professor, I was looking forward to not having to bunk with him in St. Petersburg. When the ship docked in Moscow, the captain informed us that we needed to return by 8:00 pm so that we would not miss the train going to Petersburg. On a side note, I had lived in Moscow for two years, so I left the rest of the students and made my way around town to see some friends. I returned to the ship at 8:00, loaded my luggage onto a bus and waited for the rest of the students. At 8:30, the captain of the ship was furious because the professor and the rest of the group had not returned to the ship to go to the train station. Since I was the only one there,...

Four Letter

...My first never – gettable love It was 2002. And I had just shifted to a new school. It was hard getting through the entrance as it was an ARMY SCHOOL and it one of the many average students with high hopes and get nothing. It was the first time I knew what girls really are. But that wasn’t so. I was just an dumbass who knew how to take advantage of an extra bulky figure. It was a time when girls used to pull down their socks to flaunt their legs and guys were into all sorts of fights, love and all crap. It was a very hot sunny day in Jammu and I saw a girl with skirt ending above the knee and smooth legs. Ohh.. I love those a lot. I was into watching porn and had started imagining her having sex with me. I had just fallen in love …. That is what all my friends said when they saw a hot girl. Her name was Shikha, daughter of an army personnel. She was great to talk to. But I was into something dangerous. That was the first time I went to a café to search how to propose a girl. YouTube had all such things. I was so dumb that couldn’t even tell her how I felt. Days, Weeks, Months and Years passed by and then came the time I heard that she was leaving the school because her dad was transferred to some other place. I was in eighth and didn’t had guts to even say her BYE. Because I never had a conversation with a girl before. Forget conversation not even a HI. She left and then started my downfall...

Rye Neck Reflection

...One of the most pivotal moments in my life happened in the summer of 2014 when I was going into the 8th grade and I was moving from Rye Neck to Harrison. This was a big experience for me because Rye Neck was a small school and Harrison was a much larger school. Moving wasn’t new to me because I previously moved from Yonkers to Rye Neck back in the 1st grade. There is a saying that I will always remember way back when I first moved and it was “You can leave Yonkers but Yonkers never leaves you”. I will always remember that quote because Yonkers was the place that I was born, so I will never forget where I came from. The days leading up to the start of the new school year I was very anxious to how everyone at the middle school would react to me coming there. I had to calm my emotions because I had already moved so I had nothing to worry about. When the first day of school started, I was a little nervous, but I was able to...

...darkened eyes and jet-black hair of my reflection. The sweeping coat, worn leather boots and thick woolen scarf that encircles my neck rests haggard about my slouching frame. I reach up and try to rub away a smudge of dirt from my cheek. It doesn’t budge; instead the pitiful image stares back at me unchanged through the train’s darkened glass. Alone in the compartment I sit and stare through the limp reflection. Counting down the minuets, the tunnels, the passing lampposts that fly past. Each one brings the moment closer when I will have to leave the sanctuary of the train and step out into the frozen world. Soon the train has stopped and the carriage door...

Personal Narrative: My Slippery Slopes

...In past classes, I have been made a request to play out a similar schedule, and each time I have felt very casual and agreeable. Through an examination of my encounters, it will be apparent that this experience has opened my eyes to genuine unwinding and reflection. Beginning down at my toes and working up through to my neck, I can feel that my body is shockingly exceptionally tense. As I lay and tune into the sound I see that unwinding my toes is very troublesome for me. My toes are twisted and I can feel that they are holding a considerable measure of stress. When I at last start to unwind my toes, I can feel a distinction in the sole of my foot; this disclosure was stunning to me since I never understood that in spite of the fact that these parts of my foot are...

Text Transformation

...Salome Transformation. Dear Diary; My latest guise stared back at me, as I gazed into the mirror, eyes questioning. The same question that shoots up from my subconscious like an obnoxious neon sign, illuminating the darkest crevasses of my (in)sanity. It's always the same. Why? Why do I do this? And I always have the same answer; it's not even an answer, just a shrug and a 'mind your own business'. The response is shot back at my reflection as I begin to admire my work. Red locks curl around my now hazel eyes. Red. Yes, a very fitting colour I think. I wondered if I should add anything else, freckles maybe... Redheads normally have freckles don't they? I decided against it. I had them last time. Then again, last time I was a bronzed beach blonde goddess from Florida. And in a matter of hours, I had transformed to a red haired beauty from the breathtakingly magical country that is Scotland. I tried to remember if and where I told him I was from. Knowing me I probably mumbled something nonsensical; the first city to come to my mind when I speak of Scotland. Glasgow. Yes I told him I was from Glasgow. Oh well, it didn't matter anyway, I'm sure that idiot couldn’t care less where I was from. As if on cue, my phone snaps me out of my thoughts and I see my latest's conquest's number flicker on my screen. What was his name? Peter? Simon? Andrew? John? An Alternate Ending To Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Walking back towards my bed I continued to hear more screams. A few minutes later when I was lying down I heard something or someone moving around downstairs then someone staggered up the stairs to what I thought was my parents room. The sound that followed sounded like my mother’s desperate scream. I could hear growling and tearing of something. The screaming stopped and more sounds of stumbling feet continue out of my bedroom door....
