...choices. Rhetorical choices play an important role in writing. They’re the “key ingredients” in a paper in order to capture readers’ attention and achieve writers’ purposes. When I was in Human Resource Organization Behaviors 101 class, professor Thomas Shirley assigned an ethics case for each group. I joined a group of five people and we got together for several group meetings. Finally, I was assigned to compose the “Ethical Analysis” section. Toward to the paper deadline, we produced the paper called “Starbucks: Friend or Foe.” The purpose of the assignment was to argue that whether the company’s decision was ethical when Starbucks fired employees for supporting unions and applied the four-component model of ethical decision making to this case. Discourse community is an essential factor when composing a paper. According to “Students Writing Handbook”, discourse community is a unique communication tool which people use to communicate with their readers within their fields (30). Since the paper was written for a required upper division major core course, the discourse community is all business majors. The genre was a general business paper with three sections: case summary, ethical analysis, and recommendations. We are college students are trained to become more professional in our careers. As a result, my group paper’s intended audiences were only Professor Thomas Shirley and classmates. My purpose of the paper was to convince my readers that Starbucks company was unethical when...

...87 .,~. Peer Tutoring and the "Conversation of Mankind" by Kenneth A. Bruffee The beginnings of peer tutoring lie in practice, not in theory. A decade or so ago, faculty and administrators in a few institutions around the country became aware that, increasingly, students entering college had difficulty doing as well in academic studies as their abilities suggested they should be able to do. Some of these students were in many ways poorly prepared academically. Many more of them, however, had on paper excellent secondary preparation. The common denominator among the poorly prepared and the apparently well prepared seemed to be that, for cultural reasons we may not yet fully under stand, all these students had difficulty adapting to the traditional or "normal" conventions of the college classroom. One symptom of the difficulty was that many of these students refuSed .help when it was offered. Mainly, colleges offered ancillary programs staffed by professionals. Students avoided them in droves. Many solutions to this problem were suggested and tried, from mandated programs to sink-or-swim. One idea that seemed at the time among the most exotic and unlikely (that is, in the jargon of the Sixties, among the most "radical") turned out to work rather well. Some of us had guessed that students were refusing the help we were providing because it seemed to them merely an extension of the work, the expectations, and above all the social structure of traditional classroom learning. And...

The ability to teach skills such as reading, writing, and problem solving, and then apply them to situations in my students’ everyday lives is crucial. Teachers who encourage students to reflect on what they’ve learned and incorporate those skills into their lives develop their students’ critical literacy. And, with this ability to interpret the world around them, students begin to adapt and succeed in a changing world. The student’s journey into literacy begins with a teacher. When a teacher knows subject matter well, communicating it to students becomes more of a pleasure than a chore. In knowing my subject matter, I have a strong philosophy towards literacy—both in terms of reading and writing as well as in terms of a new understanding and thinking for the digital age. As a language arts and publications teacher, I see that content specific knowledge of literature or newspaper procedures is a secondary concern when considering the larger issues of literacy. If a student can learn the tools for interpreting texts, writing essays, and creatively solving problems into their own daily lives, then I feel that my teaching served its purpose. Students also need to learn how to successfully integrate technology into their learning. To teach a student just my subject matter is not enough for them to survive. I need to teach them new ways to interpret and understand the world that...

...participation in the UMW community. Written and oral communication skills make up the basis for presentations of your work. I am far better at written communication than am oral. My teachers in high school stressed the proper ways to write essays to be clear and show our knowledge on the topic, so I was able to learn that before college. That being said, writing papers is always something that can be improved upon. Sometimes I get off topic in my papers, straying from my thesis and arguing completely different points than I mean to. With practice in my classes hopefully I can solve my paper writing issues. Oral communication I struggle far more in. While I have done lot of presentations before, I have serious stage fright, which causes me to forget what I am supposed to say or jumble my words. In high school I was able to get through by just doing the baseline for presentations and making up for it in my other work. This won’t work for important college presentations While I know that stage fright is unsolvable, I hope the honors program capstone project presentation will teach me how to present better and speaking center can help me manage my stress....

...Throughout the course of the semester, my writing as drastically improved through analyzing and understanding the course goals, its objectives, the topics of the papers, and grading rubrics. Utilizing the syllabus allowed me to see what was expected of me as a writer, and how I would be critiqued in my writing, starting with the first paper which asked me to explain the moment or experience when I knew I was a part of a discourse community. At first, I did not understand what I was supposed to write. Once we talked about it in class and went over discourse community characteristics and sample papers, my paper began to flourish from draft one all the way to draft four. In draft one, I finished my paper with “I became so good with weave that...

...Proposing to the Physician Partners to Reorganize Staff and Hire Three New Positions Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Part 1 Through health care practice, the hospital is able to offer health services to the immediate community. However, the main problem is the disorganization among the staff members. The other major issue is excess workload for the staff. The hospital requires immediate action to be taken so that health care practice and service are adequate and efficient. As the operations manager, I propose reorganization of the staff and hiring of three new positions to help solve this problem. Generally, contemporary hospitals refer to community resources. Such resources get organized in a manner that they provide patients with care, as well as improving the population’s health. The hospital can only perform these functions by bringing together a wide range of skills through a diverse and adequate workforce. In addition, this entails collecting and storing information, providing facilities and equipment, as well as organizing systems of work. Consequently, the work done by community volunteers, medical and paid staff and trustees cannot be underestimated (Lee, 2011). This proposal is not something. This is because research indicates that different organizations do experience shortages. However, the shortage of health practitioners has over the time received huge public attention. Nevertheless, hospitals have few technicians, pharmacists, housekeepers, therapists...

... Dear Dr. York, The discourse communities that I chose to focus on in my paper were my involvement in Appalachian State’s Student Government Association (SGA) and my membership in Appalachian State’s Honors College. One of my main successes writing this paper was deciding on the two best discourse communities to use. SGA and the Honors College proved to be obvious choices due to amount of time I spend attending meetings for SGA and studying to stay in good academic standing with the Honors College. Another one of the successes that I had while writing this paper was reflecting on the “so what” component of my literacy in my discourse communities....

...Preface/Unit Reflection I had many thoughts about my audience and the format of this essay before I started, but as I haven’t done essays in a long time (business majors usually focus on projects, not essays), I decided that I wanted to write my first project in a straightforward fashion. I feel that I need to get the rust off my writing, so to speak I chose to write to the rest of the class because 1) They will be peer reviewing it, so it’s convenient for them that they are the target audience and 2) I could express my thoughts in a straightforward fashion that my audience can relate to very well, as they are in the same position as I am. I wrote this essay as if I was writing to an intellectual friend who is also taking this class, is very interested in English and entrepreneurship, and wanted to see how the two topics coincided through the lens of genre analysis. I assumed that the reader knew the definitions of materiality, genre and genre analysis, and discourse community, as the intended reader is in this class and has done the readings. Surprisingly, I learned a lot about my field through reading and writing for this unit. I really loved the challenging readings, as it seemed as if I were “getting smarter” reading them. Pushing my brain processing abilities is great for my brain’s capabilities, which I value. As I wrote, I would constantly think of new ideas about my field, such as the materiality of online articles in an entrepreneur’s life, and think hard. I appreciate...

...Dear Professor Dockter, The essay that I have chosen to revise for assignment #4 is the profile essay. In this particular essay, the objective of the writer was successfully interviewing and presenting a member of a community. A member is a small part of an identity to the community. The community I selected was the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, and the specific member was Daniel Vega, a director of the language and culture department. In revising this essay, I feel that a principal global factor that the paper lacked was organization. Organization is a key component that molds an essay. According to Rules for Writers, “these patterns (sometimes called methods of development) have different uses, depending on the writers subject and purpose” (35) explaining that it depends on the type of essay I am trying to convey to the audience. The essay was short of an appropriate organization as far as an outline. I went back to the basics and rewrote my topic sentences, as well as my support and details briefly. It provided me with a basic knowledge of exactly what my paper was going to look like and consist of. With this exercise, I was able to recognize the details and the evidence that belong to other sections of the essay. Since this is a profile essay, it contains a mix of organizations to utilize: description, narration and includes a slight bit of process. It relies on what you are including in the profile. With these organizations, I am able to combine the essence of their...

...Writing Challenges Deron Davis CM220 July 21, 2015 Professor Emily Hartsfield Writing Challenges Three aspects of writing that have been difficult for in the past that I wish to improve on are grammar, style and process. When it comes to grammar I often find myself writing in the same manner in which I speak and that might not be appealing or accepted by certain audiences especially in the workplace. There are several ways in which I plan on going about working on these issues. The first plan is to first consider my audience and what type of presentation I will be making. Once I am able to identify my audience and topic more properly I will be able to better choose my writing style to fit the needs. For instance I need to also know if I am attempting to persuade the audience on my topic, describing a situation to them or just giving them a broad narration on the topic. By both identifying my audience and writing style this will help me to go about my thought process in a better way as well. A problem that I would like to solve in my community is the lack of after school recreational centers for teenagers. Some of the challenges that might arise for solving this problem is getting enough parents to back you up and commit to sending their children to the center on a regular basis. Another challenge would be getting the kids to come and keeping their interest in the different topics. I would approach this topic by first presenting all of the facts and the needs...

I had everything planned: complete a degree in Communication Disorders, enroll in the Speech and Language pathologist program here at Valdosta State University, and return to my hometown and work in the school system. Then I was given an assignment in English requiring me to research and write about my community, or group of people that share a similar interest or career. It changed everything I thought I knew about my career choice. I began English 1102 thinking this would be a class I would use to slightly improve my composition skills, and yet it has influenced more than my writing. It has pointed my future in an exhilarating new direction. Novelty isn’t really my...

...I never imagined my pen could wield such great powers. My journalism teacher recommended that I apply to be a youth writer for the Boyle Heights Beat, a local bilingual community newspaper. When I got the application, I noticed the deadline had already past. My hope dwindled but then I noticed a small note that said to address any questions to the person in charge. The following week, I received an email to thank me for applying and to inform me that all the positions had been filled. While I was not surprised, I was still devastated because I wondered what it would feel like to be a writer for the Boyle Heights community. I wondered if any students had dropped the program, and maybe there would be an opportunity for me. I reached out to the person in charge yet again and I was happy to learn that some students rejected the program’s acceptance which gave me a chance to be part of the community newspaper....
