...One ENG102 April 27, 2014 My Personal Writing Style I like to think of myself as a work in progress, when it comes to writing because I am always looking for ways to improve and making changes in my writing process. I always start off my writing process by brainstorming and outlining; it is the first and most important step in writing for me. Brainstorming and outlining helps me to sort out my ideas and to actually begin to organize my thoughts and the writing process, it during this time that my paper actually begins to take (which makes the actual writing easier). I think that I am a methodical writer, and the brainstorming is a part of my method of writing. Another process for me that never changes is that I am a very hands-on writer, so much so that all of my papers and rough drafts begin the old fashioned way on pen and paper. I prefer to use a pen and I usually write a little fast, and sloppy. Beginning my papers on paper allows me to write freely and I always skip lines between my sentences and paragraphs so that I have space to make any changes or add any new sentences when I reread and edit. In fact, I am so old school that I never type my papers until I am ready to start the final draft of my paper. I believe that using pen and paper allows me to visualize my writing better and to formulate new ideas. This method also makes proofreading and catching any spelling and grammatical errors easy. When it comes to writing I like to start early and not procrastinate...

...think” portrays him as an accomplished writer with a lot of experience and knowledge in his writings/work through the extensive research that he has invested in his work. Levy explores the vast impacts of technological advancement in our today’s society. In this article levy maintains that technological devices has affected our capacity to think intuitively, capacity to tap our vast realm of consciousness and reflections. The writer targets the entire society but mostly scholars, educator and students through his entire work. The abstract work clearly introduces the disadvantages of technological devices/advancement and how it has affected our thinking and reflections. Levy expects scholars, students and educators to take time and reflect on their use of technology and their effects. The world has arrived...to me it depicts the arrival of a new age, stage or cycle of life that incorporates and implements new technology and devices that would minimize the levels of thinking and work. The introduction of this article demonstrates how levy took a lot of time to think when doing research for this writing. This is clearly depicted by him mentioning great scholars and innovators such as Barbara Mcclintock as people who did not rely on the technological devices/advancements to accomplish their great research/work but took time to think, reflect and tap their vast realm of consciousness. The introduction briefly lays out his plan and purpose of writing this essay as it points out how technology...

...MEMO The memo will both summarize and analyze the information obtained in my interview with NAME, Senior Lecturer and Assistant to the Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI, regarding professional writing skills used in her particular workplace. I will also outline the personal goals I have set for my own writing. Interview Summary According to NAME, the two most important characteristics of effectively written documents are clarity and concision. Always a mathematician, she believes sound, logical arguments are the keys to achieving this in her writing. This practice helps her eliminate wordiness and omit superfluous information as well as achieve brevity in her overall document. Keeping her documents brief and to the point, she says, is a sign of respect toward her readers and their valuable time. Sound arguments also help ensure that readers will be able to follow her thought process and arrive at the conclusion she desires. NAME writes for many different audiences, often with varying levels of knowledge. These may include the department chair, faculty and occasionally staff from other units. It is important, she says, to keep the needs of the readers in mind. Even readers with the highest level of knowledge about a subject need to be kept informed about changes and advancements. She also advises that writers remember that documents are often passed along to other readers (perhaps outside the intended audience). She feels it is important...

...My experience from English 101 helped me grow as a reader and writer. One manner in which my English skills improved transpired through reading and writing assignments. Essays remarkably helped me understand the English language to a greater extent. Moreover, the templates from they say I say the moves that matter in academic writing expanded my understanding of the point the author was trying to make. Additionally, templates simplified my task when summarizing articles for homework. My vocabulary expanded considerably because of the readings assigned. All things considered what unquestionably stood out to me was that the professor offered excellent feedback during office hours. Essays remain crucial to my growth in reading and writing. These assignments, in particular, forced me to scrutinize the previous reading assignments assigned. Which helped me formulate a better essay do to my understanding of the readings. Additionally, writing essays positively challenged me as a reader because I had to reexamine my essays and identify my mistakes. However, I was able to grow in this area in particular because of the feedback the professor gave in our drafts. ...Academic to Business Writing Style When I first entered the business world as an intern, I quickly realized that I would have to unlearn the academic writing style in order to improve my business communication skills. I have learned that being able to writing effectively and professionally is the key to being successful. Due to the advancement in technology, the way we communicate with each other has completely transformed. Business professionals are now able to communicate instantly via e-mail, phone, and video with a simple touch of a button. Effective business writing is a skill that can be improved with practice. Understanding the differences between academic and business writing is essential for success. Business writing differs from academic writing in terms of: • Format • Purpose/Audience • Content Business writing is composed of simple, short sentences that vary in length. It is important to write in a clear and concise manner to avoid information overload. The writer should convey the message in as few words as possible. The authors of “Writing that Works” emphasize that it is important to “write concisely, but do not be so blunt that you risk losing the reader’s goodwill” (Alred, Brusaw, & Oliu, 2013, p. 277). The use of bullet points and bold font helps to summarize the information and emphasize important details. The two main purposes of business writing are to recommend actions and inform the audience. In business writing, the audience can include...

...goal setting increase performance, achievement, and ultimately well-being” (p. 44)? In my opinion, academic success should be included in one’s model for achieving one’s career goals. While some believe continuing academic success is not required to obtain one's ultimate career goal, academic success is achieved by setting goals, fusing one’s learning style with lessons being taught, applying critical thinking skills and utilizing all available resources. During this first course of continuing my education, I’ve learned the tools necessary to become academically successful as well starting on the path to a successful career. Goal Setting Setting goals, leads to success because there’s a plan being put into motion. According to Lock & Latham 2002, “Research indicates that when an individual sets a goal that individual shows increased direct physical effort, cognitive effort on repeated task, self-reported subjective effort, and physiological indicators of effort” (p.44). Choosing the online course to continue my education allows me to move at my own pace. Setting goals is directive; goals reveal the path in which I need to follow. All of these actions lead to positive outcomes. (Curran & Reivich 2011, Lock & Latham 2002, Locke & Bryan 1969). Smaller and easier to attain goals should be set; this will allow me to remain persistence and to see that progress is being made toward my career goal. According to (Curran & Reivich 2011, Lock & Latham 2002, Locke & Bryan 1969)...

...My Writing Knowledge While looking over the material for this paper my first thought was I’m hungry. This is probably not a typical thought when trying to prepare an English paper. However, it gave me an interesting thought. Writing a paper is like making a cheeseburger. Aside from my cheeseburger idea I also attended a college preparatory high school and have also taken other English courses while in the Marine Corps. To make a cheeseburger you start off with the bottom bun. This is the introductory paragraph of your paper. The outside bottom of the bun is plain bread which is general, and this is the first sentence of your introductory paragraph. Moving up the bun it becomes more specific by either frying it, adding butter or mayonnaise. You make the rest of the paragraph more specific to lead into the following paragraph. The next paragraph is the first piece of meat. In relation to writing a paper this is your first main topic, a bold statement that the writer is trying to get across to the reader. This paragraph must contain the information gathered from research. Paraphrasing is a good way to incorporate your knowledge and understanding of the research and in doing this it explains the topic to the reader. The third paragraph is the cheese of the cheeseburger. This is a good place to add the details and quotes of the research to the paper. When using quotes you must cite them correctly to give credit to the author. By using facts and statistics it supports the...

...I chose to revise was my About Me page. Due to the relatively small length of the piece (two paragraphs), especially in comparison to longer papers like the Familiar Genre Analysis (four pages), doing a momentous amount of revisions is unpractical. However, the changes I did make significantly altered the piece. To start off, I made some corrections to various middle and lower order concerns, like grammar (added “am” before “from” in the first sentence) and transitions (first sentence of second paragraph links the two, creating flow that was previously absent). After that, I focused on these, more important higher order concerns: audience, pathos and genre conventions. Previously, the reference to the audience for my blog was vague and practically missing. By adding the fact that “one of the primary uses of this blog is for my English 1020 class at Wayne State University,” I was able to hone in on my prospective audience: my professor and fellow classmates. Next, I added in more details about myself to help the reader feel better connected to me. By stating where I lived through my life and what country I identity myself as being from, as well as one of my biggest goals in life, I am allowing future readers to know me and my writing, not just the latter. Finally, I attempted to improve my use of genre conventions. About Me pages typically include a reason why the writer started a blog, so I included that. Also, I tried to be more interactive with my readers by asking them...

...about my writing skills than I thought I had. In the beginning I had neutral feelings about how well I would do in this course. I’ve always known that I had good writing techniques, but have been out of school for over 10 years and wasn’t sure if I could still write like how I used to. When I was in high school I remember writing essays, research papers, and even memoirs but was only the basics of how to properly write. It gave me practice on my vocabulary as well as sentence and paragraph structure. It also allowed my imagination and thoughts to come out on paper and let the reader indulge in my stories. But how good of a writer was I? After taking a course called Composition 1 in college, I found that my writing skills; even though pretty good, had to be improved. I feel that my writing has improved due to learning how to properly brainstorm ideas and set up my research findings before I put them on my final paper. I also learned how to cite my findings which is a skill they don’t stress about in High School. Writing Essays, or Research Papers aren’t difficult for me, however I must say that writing a Memoir would have to be the most difficult because I don’t like talking about myself let alone have people know personal details of my life. Now that I’m at the end of my course in Composition 1 My attitude and feelings toward writing now has changed. I feel more confident and more knowledgeable in writing and now have a higher level of experience. During my time...

...I can’t honestly say when I became interested in writing, but I can say when I experienced the moment I discovered I could write. It was this discovery that gave me the confidence I needed to try and actually study in school and not just do the least amount for a passing grade. The moment was during my first English class at university when an instructor said to me while handing back my essay, "Would you like to turn this into a novella?" Up to that point no one had recognized me for academic achievement, let alone writing. I was shocked, I remember standing there and saying, “You must mean someone else, I don’t write well.” The instructor laughed and I was offended. Why was I being laughed at for being such a poor writer? Once I realized...

...I learned a lot from writing this paper! It was extremely different from the concept essay but it was a good different. It required finding and reading sources as well as understanding their points of view and opinions on a given topic. I used what I learned from writing my first essay to help guide me but the examples given in the book honestly helped too. For this paper I knew I had to keep my opinions out of the paper and focus on those from my sources, Tim Anderson and JoAnna Wendel. These were fantastic articles to draw from because they almost mirrored each other! JoAnna Wendel believed strongly in the advancement of GMOs and felt that GMOs were completely safe and had studies to back up her opinion. Tim Anderson, on the other hand, opposed GMOs as well as the government, as he felt, not doing its job to keep the public safe....
