...Network Design Your name Your class Your teacher Date Network Design In business the main key to success is communication with others and to do ones job effectively. Up until around 1990 this communication would have been conducted through postal service or telephone services that offered only voice or fax. Today however thanks to the advancements in technology companies can use networks to communicate more timely. Network design is the process of planning and deploying a computer network for a company. A Computer Network defined in its simplest form is “a network consists of two or more connected computers” (Laudon & Laudon, 2009). Networks are a requirement for companies to succeed in business through the interlacing of the corporate network infrastructure. When one is designing a network for use by a company they must consider what that company is trying to achieve. To what extent do communication capabilities need to be utilized. It must be determined whether it is just voice communication or email and voice communication or data communication. Furthermore, does the local network need access to a larger network such as the internet? Is there a need for an intranet? There are many options that must be analyzed for a firm to manage their business in the most effective manner without exceeding their needs. For example, if the needs are exceeded the cost of running the network may outweigh the benefits of the networks capabilities. This is the...

...Marketing Channel Strategies in Rural Emerging Markets Unlocking Business Potential By Benjamin Neuwirth Benjamin Neuwirth, Kellogg School of Management, bneuwirth2012@kellogg.northwestern.edu 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In his landmark book “The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid,” C.K. Prahalad describes the profits that can be earned by selling products to “Bottom of the Pyramid” customers. While there is truth to this, companies face unique challenges when operating in the rural regions of emerging markets where many of these customers live. For example, the consumer population is dispersed over a wide geographic area, transportation infrastructure is often poorly developed, and many consumers have sporadic and extremely low incomes. This paper examines these challenges from a marketing channel perspective. The fundamental question is: How can companies entering into rural emerging markets design a marketing channel strategy that meets the needs of customers and allows for the long-term profitable success of the business? I begin answering this question by examining common challenges that companies operating in this environment face. Each challenge is accompanied by examples of companies that have solved the problem in a unique way. Then, I develop a generalized framework for designing marketing channels in rural emerging markets. Finally, I apply the framework to d.light Design, a company that manufactures and sells solar lanterns in India and Africa and that I worked...

Reviewing this ample body of knowledge however one cannot help but notice a persistent disunion between the “value chain” view that considers aspects of value creation and appropriation, and the operational “supply chain” view that considers strategies and tools for designing and operating efficient inter-firm networks. Commonly these views do not interact: value creation has the aim of capturing the maximum value-added in financial terms, the supply chain view aims for designing operationally efficient supply chains. In contrast to their treatise within the academic literature, from a practical point of view these two aspects are both necessary (and thus in their own right insufficient)...

...INTERNETWORKING INTERNETWORKING Abstract A local area network (LAN) is a communication network that interconnects a variety of data communicating devices within a small geographic area and broadcasts data at high data transfer rates with very low error rates. Since the local area network first appeared in the 1970s, its use has become widespread in commercial and academic environments. It would be very difficult to imagine a collection of personal computers within a computing environment that does not employ some form of local area network. This chapter begins by discussing the basic layouts or topologies of the most commonly found local area networks, followed by the medium access control protocols that allow a workstation to transmit data on the network. We will then examine most of the common local area network products such as Ethernet and token ring. Local Area Networks also called LANs have been a major player in industrialization of computers. In the past 20 or so years the worlds industry has be invaded with new computer technology. It has made such an impact on the way we do business that it has become essential with an ever growing need for improvement. LANs give an employer the ability to share information between computers with a simple relatively inexpensive system of network cards and software. It also lets the user or users share hardware such as Printers and scanners. The speed of access between the computers is lighting fast because the data has a...

...This document discusses covers the implementation of a network that considers the various aspects of the company. The aim is to have a network that is comprehensive such that the organization can achieve the expected benefits from such an investment. The project addresses the needs of an organization that has different office locations. This means that different LANs need to be developed. The project discusses the cabling specifications, wide area network design; network protocols; network remote access; network business applications; and network security. For the cabling specifications, the physical position of the various systems and offices are considered. Because of the need for interconnection among computers in different offices, the cables specified address the need for protection against electromagnetic interference. The design of the local area network addresses the need for interconnectivity among all computers at each of the locations of the organization. The ring topology allows for centralization of various computers, while ensuring fast data transfer throughout the network. The design of the wide area network, on the other hand, allows for secure interconnectivity among the organization’s different locations and also allows for access to the internet. The network protocols considered for the network are: (a) TCP/IP; (b) POP and SMTP; (c) HTTP; and (d) FTP. Bluetooth is considered for local connectivity of some devices. For remote access, VPN is considered as the...

This design includes the infrastructure for the corporate headquarters located in San Francisco, as well as the other design centers in Detroit, Paris, Tokyo, and Sao Paulo. We then follow up by explaining the infrastructure of the sales offices, which may not require as high grade of equipment as the design centers depending on its requirements. Finishing with the overview of the entire wide area network, connecting each site to the corporate headquarters which is where we will begin our design. The corporate office being the main headquarters will include many services such as file, print, email, directory, and application. These services will be separated onto at least two different servers due to the constant strain we may see from directory and email services. If necessary we will implement an application server as well to run any in-house programs the company may be familiar with. We also suggest the use of a database server dedicated to storing and providing access to its information throughout the network, which would also need to maintain a backup located nearby or even...

...On June 12, 2009, Finland-based telecom giant, Nokia Corporation (Nokia) launched its Nokia Life Tools (NLT) service in the state of Maharashtra in India. This was a bid to expand its rural base in the country. The service was commercially rolled out after the successful implementation of the pilot program in Maharashtra, in November 2008. The launch of the NLT service marked the increasing accessibility of value-added services (VAS) to rural consumers in India. Targeted at the rural consumers, the NLT service offered a range of services in the areas of agriculture, education, and entertainment to address the information gaps in the rural community. Nokia began focusing on the Indian rural market in 2003 when it launched a mobile handset with features such as longer battery life, one-touch flashlight, etc., that catered to the needs of the rural consumers. Over the years, it extended its support to the rural markets by launching several low-end phones that rural consumers found affordable. However, the company felt the need to serve the rural market by offering a value proposition along with its handsets. It noted that the rural consumers, especially farmers and students, had little or no access to the information they needed due to lack of resources and erratic Internet connections. This prompted Nokia to launch a service that would be embedded in its handsets and would serve the needs of the rural community. In November 2008, the company launched a pilot program for testing...
