...Dave’s Crash Course in Statistics using SPSS 1.0 Classifying the different types of data There are four types of variables: nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio. Distinguishing between these types of variables is important, as several statistical tools may only be used for certain types of data. Nominal variables: where values are assigned to categories in no particular order. This assignment of values is arbitrary and holds no particular meaning or order to them. For example, “sex” where 1=male 2=female “marital status” where 1=never married 2= married 3=defacto “yes/no type questions” where 1=yes 2=no. Ordinal variables: where values are assigned to categories that are related to each other in some logical order – such as ascending or descending order. For example, “age group” 1=under 21yrs 2=21-35yrs 3=35-49yrs 4=50 yrs and over “education” where 1=high school completed 2=tertiary studies completed 3=post-graduate studies completed. The higher the value assigned, the higher the category (ie. higher age group or education level). Interval variables: where the values assigned are ordered in the same way as ordinal variables, however, the intervals or distances between the categories are equally spaced. For example, “please rate the importance of the following attributes…” according to the scale 1----------2----------3----------4----------5 where 1=strongly...

Then check that the Pearson Chi-Square is significant. Lastly look at the “Adjusted Residual” to see if it is greater than 1.96 or less than -1.96. One-Sample T-test Analyze Compare Means One-Sample T-test Choose the scale (interval or ratio) variable on the left to be tested and move it to the right window In the “Test Value” box enter the value you to which you want to compare the mean Click “OK” Output: SPSS gives you a 2-tailed significance value. For a one tailed test you double the significance value. Independent Samples T-test Analyze Compare Means Independent Samples T-test Choose the scale (interval or ratio) variable(s) on the left to be tested and move it to the upper “Test Variable(s)” right window Choose the nominal variable on the left and move it to the “Grouping Variable” box at the bottom right. Read the following program prior to completing the lab. Data Communications Corp wants a small program that will calculate the cost of UTP it installs for their clients. Write a program that will ask the user to input the name of the client, the number of feet of cable installed. The program should then calculate and display a final bill. Cost per foot of UTP is .21 cents. Be sure to add on a tax of 6%. Final bill should include the total cost and client name. Be sure to add modules to your program. Consider the following variables and modules in your program. (Reference: Defining and Calling a Module, page 78). Variable Name | Declare String clientName | Declare...

...Appendix II: STATA Preliminary STATA is a statistical software package that offers a large number of statistical and econometric estimation procedures. With STATA we can easily manage data and apply standard statistical and econometric methods such as regression analysis and limited dependent variable analysis to crosssectional or longitudinal data. STATA is widely used by analysts working with household survey data. 1. Getting Started 1.1. Starting STATA Start a STATA session by double-clicking on the STATA icon in your desktop. The STATA computing environment comprises four main windows. The size and shape of these windows may be moved about on the screen. Their general look and description are shown below: It is useful to have the Stata Results window be the largest so you can see a lot of information about your commands and output on the screen. In addition to these windows STATA environment has a menu and a toolbar at the top (to perform STATA operations) and a directory status bar at the bottom (that shows the current directory). You can use menu and toolbar to issue different Poverty Manual, All, JH Revision of August 8, 2005 Page 170 of 218 STATA commands (like opening and saving data files), although most of the time it is more convenient to use the Stata Command window to perform those tasks. If you are creating a log file (see below for more details), the contents can also be displayed on the screen; this is sometimes useful if one needs to back up to...

...years. There is no place in the world free with this type of products. The modernization and the globalization make the counterfeiting process more difficult to control, affecting not only the countries economy, but also its safety and the citizens’ general integrity. Knowing the importance of this problem, different organizations around the world are making a big effort trying to create a variety of countermeasures in order to stop the development of this sector and of course the negative consequences. In order to create effective measures, it is necessary to completely understand the counterfeiting process and the specific reasons why people acquire counterfeit products. The objective of this study is to describe what are the different variables, and their direct influence on the purchaser’s behavior at the moment of buying counterfeit merchandise. The data collection method is based on focus groups, interviews and questionnaires. The results obtained from this study can help to understand the complete counterfeit process and facilitate future studies in order to created adequate countermeasures against this global issue. Why do people buy counterfeit products? 3 PURPOSE STATEMENT Counterfeit is a serious issue that affects individuals, cities and countries. The world as a whole is being touched by this powerful industry. The free trading of these products is...

...Five advantages: 1. C++ is well-suited for large projects because it has an object-oriented structure. People can collaborate on one program by breaking it up into parts and having a small group or even one individual work on each part. The object-oriented structure also allows code to be reused a lot, which can cut down development time. C++ is also a fairly efficient language - although many C programmers will disagree. 2. C is a popular language, especially in game programming, because it doesn't have the extra packaging of the object-oriented C++. Programmers use C because it makes programs slightly faster and smaller than programs written in C++. You might wonder, however, whether it's worth giving up the reusability of C++ to get the small increase in performance with C, especially when C++ can, where necessary, be written in a C programming style. 3. Pascal is primarily a teaching language. Few industrial programs are written in Pascal. Pascal tends to use keywords instead of C-style braces and symbols, so it is a bit easier for beginners to understand than languages like C++. Still, not everyone thinks Pascal is just for the schools. Borland, the huge compiler software company, has been pushing Delphi as an industrial strength programming language. Delphi is an object-oriented version of Pascal, and currently, only Borland compilers use it. 4. Java is a multi-platform language that is especially useful in networking. Of course, the most famous usage of Java is on...
