...“Summer Solstice, New York City”, by Sharon Olds is a poem that explains a scene in which a man wants to commit suicide by jumping off a building, but in the end police officers make him rethink his decision. The man is described as being on the ledge of a building when officers rushed towards him and prevented him from jumping. The poem portrays many issues including, setting, theme and symbolism that aids in comprehending the author’s purpose. Immediately, the title of the poem gives us a clue of the setting. Summer Solstice means it was the longest day of the year. New York is one of the most populated and busiest cities in the United States, making it fairly easy for one to feel lonely and unimportant like the man in the poem. When the...

...of paper, people sometimes can’t help but quiver? A sudden rush of fear and anxiety hangs over them. For a student or scholar in particular, it is not simply the beginning to reach the end of the test or the ‘be all end all’ in achieving something worthwhile in life. It provides the user with a key to delve into the realm of imagination with the purpose of gaining happiness or life’s true meaning. Imagination is something which is unique to ever individual on earth past or present, because like the world we live in, imagination is in constant change, adaption and always learning. When unlocked and encompassed with the power of the mind, imagination can achieve endless means in theory. For an artist this may be a chance to create something new, something colourful or perhaps even dark. For a scholar it creates a chance of expression through words. Right to expression however, is key to any successful contemporary or classical work most importantly. Whether for good or bad intentions it creates the basis for which to explore and perhaps even indulge. A blank canvas creates a new beginning. Like a second chance in life, an empty sheet can give an individual a new beginning and allows him/her to forget the past, it is no longer relevant, unless the artist depicts it that way. If it were not for blank canvases nothing new would ever be imagined just simply copied, tweaked and regurgitated in another...

...August 2005 Managing Transitions Making the Most of Change By William Bridges This is the second edition of Bridges’ popular 1991 book that has sold 400,000 copies. He says that people do not have problems with change itself, but rather with transitions. The change is the situation, i.e., the new boss, the move, the reorganization, etc. The transition is “psychological. It is the three-phased process people go through as they internalize and come to terms with the details of the new situation that the change brings about.” “People have to bring their hearts and minds to work,” so when change comes along, “transition management…is a way of dealing with people that makes everyone feel more comfortable.” The first phase is Letting Go—the ending of the old. People need to deal with their losses. Next is the “neutral zone,” when the old is gone and the new is not fully operational. Psychological realignments take place. And then there is the new beginning. People develop a new identity, experience new energy and purpose, and make change begin to happen. How to Get People to Let Go You start by identifying who will suffer losses and try to understand them. You sympathize publicly and permit people to grieve. Find ways to compensate (non-financial) for the losses, if possible. Of course, communication is a top priority, clearly defining details over and over is important. Ceremonies to “mark the ending” are appropriate to honor the past. Leading People Through the Neutral Zone...

...that I would like to erase for good. As I look back, I think the one event that really turned my life around was joining the Navy, 20 years later and I must say it was a decision well made. As I graduated high school my thought process was to be the first person in my family to go to college. Here I am an 18 year old boy from Queens, New York having to travel more than an hour to college, taking two buses and a train. Now this does not sit well with someone when it is in the middle of winter and you feel like the city is just eating you up. It was at that point where I figured college life was not for me. Transitioning from a place where I knew plenty of people to an environment that was completely made of strangers also contributed to my decision on leaving college. Now here I am attending college, it feels like things have come full circle; I am now laying the foundation for my children setting the example that I did not have while I was growing up. As for my future, I am looking forward to gaining more experience through more watershed moments and hopefully I have the awareness to enjoy the transition from the ending to the new beginnings. Situation Analysis When I was 18 years old going to college living with my parents, I have made up my mind to drop out of college and join the military. I did not know...

...culture, education and economy, forcing and scaring the people who decided to trust into a different opinion against the government, those ones will be recognized as “Traitors” and “Enemies of the nation” at least that was the way they used to call them. The visual arts means to me as a way to escape from reality and open our minds to others, to make them understand that there’s a another world outside complete different as the one who we live in now. At the age of seven, my father took me into a Father-son trip to the beach, where he gave me my first camera, an Instant water proof Kodak, one of the most beautiful gifts that i’m still appreciating from hem. Since then I have been feeling a passion for the Films and Photography a passion who becomes an intuitive path that guides me through life. For me films are about romance, adventures, tears, laughs and smiles, more than recording with a video camera, doing a film involves feelings, inspiration, originality, pushing the boundaries and making us to be able to distinguish ourselves from one another. Every mind is a different world, this life is a gift, no matter how pain full it seems to be, we need to be ready to take a risk, to grow and recognized that everyone has reason to live. I’m taking now the risk, I’m growing up and I’m recognizing my reason to...

...In today's world, many people go through a development to get to a place where everything seems fall into place. These developments can be anything from small to large; dealing with love, become a grown-up, dealing with financial commitments or something completely different and they happen when you are child, teenage or adult. They can also occur in relationships and in families, were it is not only you who are struggling with a development, but two – maybe more people. This can causes further conflict, as you may not agree on how to deal with conflicts and how to progress the development. In the movie and the book "About a boy" a lot of different developments are looked into, and brought up in all sorts of ways. This happens most often through the two main characters' life and everyday. The movie and the book use multiple viewpoints. The story is told by only one character at a time, but the viewpoint switches between the two main characters throughout the course of the movie and the book. In every chapter of the book it changes from Marcus viewpoint to Will’s, and in the movie it changes when we as viewer follows Marcus’s actions to Will’s. We know what Marcus and Will thinks, which gives us a perspective from several different angles and in this case keeps the story fresh and exciting. The author has done an incredibly good job, as he has managed not to lose the viewer/reader through the multiple viewpoints, and that is because the transitions are well done. The narrator...

...blossom blooms, or a butterfly emerges. In fact, when it comes to forces of nature, the most widely addressed and studied topic is what physicists call entropy – the process by which dynamic systems that include (a) people, (b) organizations, (c) automobiles, and (d) solar systems, gradually fall apart. It is hard to make significant changes in any human group without changing an individual’s behavior and the underlying meaning that gives rise to their behavior (Kegan & Lahey, 2001). Once change does occur, it is inevitably disruptive. The fact is Americans in general have always been in some state of transition with Old World families that can be traced back to the home of their ancestors. New destinations and new career opportunities keep people moving driven by faith and a belief of better things to come. Even though it opens the doors to new opportunities, most people are hesitant to embrace change. An extensive transformation is taking place in organizational management between employers and employees. The lessons learned about how job security, training, and internal development that improve employee assurance and performance, have given way to a...

...------------------------------------------------- my home and family back in Italy to explore a better life for myself. I felt as if I needed a fresh start ------------------------------------------------- It was on February 16, 1889 when I decided it was time to make a drastic change in my life. I wanted a life better for myself and the family so I headed out into the new world. This would mark the first time I would be leaving dear sweet Italy. I felt as if I needed a fresh start and America seemed like the perfect place to start a new beginning. I began my travel aboard a ship with other immigrants just like myself. The trip to America was not without its hardships the ship for the most part was crowded, food was in short supply and many of us got sick but never the less I was determined to make it. Enduring such hardships and surviving made me more appreciative about the life I have. ------------------------------------------------- Finally after such a long trip I have made it to America. The journey was long and crowded but after the things I saw it was well worth it. Ellis Island was the place where me and the other immigrants had made our way to. The year was 1892 the opening at the New York Harbor, until its closing in 1954. Those of us who arrived at Ellis Island was welcomed with open arms. There were hospitals available for those of us who we were ailing and needed immediate medical attention but before anyone was allowed in they had to first undergo an inspection. Those who failed were turned away and placed...

...process of choosing what color the flower will be, determining its size, along with what will accompany it are just few steps which will determine what the flower will look like after the manufacturing process. The flower, which is seeking to bring happiness and joy to the lives of whoever buys it is halfway there of accomplishing its goal. With its rich orange color, it reminds us of a calm and peaceful time where everything was perfect. The warm color shows how it can unite us in a time of chaos and confusion. Even though this flower doesn’t have an aroma, it seems like it has showered the room with cleanliness. Having a positive nature to beauty, the flower makes us think how to be happier and improve ourselves in this cold and bitter world. Only if this flower was a living organism, it could be compared to Mother Teresa. Bringing peace and tranquility to the everyday stress and hectic life we all live. Being fragile has not stopped the flower from bringing two people together for ages, but has made relationships more pleasant and sensual. The flower has brought generations and generations of people together to form a single bond, like the root that holds the flower together even in tumultuous times. This flower has seen so much through time that it has become invincible to change and will continue to look upon us as we change. Then one day we will look back and look at the flower and say, “I wish I was as young and pretty as that flower.” But, we have to move on...

...Enrolling in a college course was a new beginning for me because I haven’t been very good when it comes down to writing essays. But with the hard work and dedication that I put in this course I surprisingly became a much better one. I came into this class prepared, and knowing that it would be difficult and a new change compared to any other class I have taken before. This course has exposed me to many different writing technique and different writing skills that helped improve my writing in everyway possible. Throughout this English 1301 class I have learned self discipline, and how to handle stress. English is not quite my favorite subject, but during this course I discovered my weaknesses and strongest areas. As the days progressed during the course so did the challenges I had to overcome. One of my personal challenges I faced was the word count I had to meet in order to complete the assignment. By having a certain limit I had to reach not only made me use more details but challenged me in elaborating the topic I was talking about. In any college class you are expected to meet these high standards which I found very difficult but progressed within time and became better at writing more sufficient. Another obstacle I faced during the course was the four letter word time. Time played a crucial role in this course because it kept me from slacking off, and taught me to put school before anything else. At the beginning of the course we were given a syllabus of assignments...

...What is the relationship between rebranding and regeneration? Though the two concepts are often confused or used synonymously, rebranding and regeneration refer to two very different (but intrinsically linked) aspects of creating a new identity or “fresh start” for something, or somewhere. Regeneration typically refers to encouraging growth and restoration in an area that has previously displayed symptoms of decline, primarily the economy but also relating to other social, economic and environmental aspects of an area. Nonetheless, it is an essential aspect of creating a new beginning for an area because without a stable economic foundation, an area can struggle to grow and strive as it lacks the financial capability to continue expanding. Regeneration is seen as a long and continuous process that transforms a depleting area (in terms of economy and physical features) into a growing, stable area. Rebranding, however, refers to a much more varied and inclusive type of change – instead focussing on developing a place to change or improve its image and public opinion. This usually consists of two different actions: regeneration and reimaging. Rebranding as a concept usually includes regeneration as one of the two fundamental steps to positively transform or rebrand an area. Unlike regeneration, rebranding focuses on improving the actual physical infrastructure and environment of an area – the “inside” – as well as improving the public opinion towards the area and making...

...of an Hour by Kate Chopin (1984) Kate describes Mrs. Millard as being afflicted by heart problems. She is young and has “a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression.” It seems as Mrs. Millard is not happily married to Brently Millard. When she hears the news of his accidental death she has mixed feelings. At first she wept from the awful news her sister Josephine purveyed upon her but then stops and only sobs. She seems to have joyous moments after the death of her husband because of the freedom she will unveil. She will no longer be to the beck and call of her husband as it seems she is. Mrs. Millard feels she will now be free, free, free. Mrs. Millard realized she will now only rely on herself and not anyone else; she could finally do as she pleases. After Mrs. Millard realized this she begins to see her possibly new reality. “She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.” Implying that she is now to undergo a new beginning. She seems happy and relieved she could start alone. Chopin’s theme for this story was Freedom of a woman from a marriage. This story reveals the psychological pressures of women whom were submissive and unappreciated. “There would be no powerful will bending...

...“Faster, faster… come on!” I urged under my breath, pedaling furiously. A thunderstorm had started, I was soaked to my skin, my stomach was growling and yet my bicycle refused to move faster. Getting back home was quite literally an uphill task as it was on top of a hill, sitting like a cream colored cherry on top of a green colored hill. The rain was not helping my quest to get back home in time for a nourishing dinner and a full night’s sleep, both of which had been recently denied to me due to the pressures of my new job. Avoiding the puddles formed in the potholes of the road, I made my way forward slowly but steadily. Thoughts of my father crept into my mind. His smile, his booming laughter, the fierce frown when someone, anyone, told him what to do were my most vivid memories. He had departed for his next life now; a tumor in his lungs made sure of that. Even though it had now been a year since his death, I still missed him. My mother had left me and my father when I was a mere 3-year old girl, impressionable and then, heart-broken. I have never trusted anyone completely ever since. I huffed and puffed up the hill and when I was close enough, I saw something which made my blood run cold. A streak of lightning. A fire. On the very top of the hill. I cycled like I had never cycled before. Memories of my father building the house swirled into my mind, too fast to separate. Panic seized my throat. I could not let it burn down. It was my only tangible...
