...Chapter 1: Introduction Natural Language Processing Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the computerized approach to analyzing text that is based on both a set of theories and a set of technologies. And, being a very active area of research and development, there is not a single agreed-upon definition that would satisfy everyone, but there are some aspects, which would be part of any knowledgeable person’s definition. Several elements of this definition can be further detailed. Firstly the imprecise notion of ‘range of computational techniques’ is necessary because there are multiple methods or techniques from which to choose to accomplish a particular type of language analysis. ‘Naturally occurring texts’ can be of any language, mode, genre,...

...Introduction Leadership management and NLP Mastering self-awareness, and in order to become an extraordinary communicator, the leaders create the attributes of great self-awareness, resourcefulness, flexibility in behaviour and effectiveness, which all together develop their innate resilience. All this is necessary to establish a clear thinking, focused mind, personal grooming, and behavioural psychology and NLP can be applied here. According to Tosey (2008) neurolinguistic programing means a systematic linkage between an individual’s mental internal experience (also referred as ‘neuro’), language (‘linguistic’) and the patterns of behaviour (‘programming’). According to Walker (2004), this can further be distributed into three components, including: • Neuro: based on the neurology of feeling and thinking • Linguistic: usage of language to persuade or influence others and ourselves • Programming: guidelines on how to achieve the set goals Self-awareness on the other hand is the ability to know, understand and assess our own self, specifically the flow of our feelings, implicit weaknesses, latent talent which is not yet groomed by us and the areas of our life, which require attention and change. We also need to evaluate if we are guided by our moral values, or some kind of conditioning has been shaping us. Likewise, we also need to examine if our thoughts and actions are in compliance with the principles and beliefs we possess in mind. The ability to self-awareness is one...

...NLP: CONNECTOR BETWEEN MANAGER AND SUBORDINATE Palwasha Khan Sana Iqbal Sundus Younis Faculty of Engineering Management Center of Advance Studies in Engineering (CASE) Abstract: Neuro Linguistic Programming is thought to be an advance communication tool which incorporates Human cognition, behavioral contour, and unconscious verbal/nonverbal patterns in order to understand the way information is being perceived, processed and acted upon by the individual and how he interact with his environment including the human factor. It is continuously being probed for its impact over successful human interactions and relationship. Usage of NLP in business world is still unexplored in certain aspects. This research paper is meant to study the impact of appropriate NLP techniques over the relationships that typically exist between managers and subordinates. Using a survey questionnaire, data is being collected from employees of a variety of organizations and found out that though mostly, NLP is unconsciously applied in managerial sector, it does play its role in improving the perceived manager-subordinate relationship, through improving the trustworthiness of the managers and the social bonding that exist between the managers and their subordinates. NLP also impacts to a lesser degree upon the feedback process and participative management style of the manager. Currently managers give more credit to importance of NLP techniques in better relationship building than the subordinates....

...participation for more complex coding cases and data analysis tasks. Factors, such as advances in natural language processing, EHR adoption, compliance issues and mandates for labor – intensive administrative reporting processes reduction, influenced the demand of CAC. Traditionally, clinical documentation (whether paper or electronic) is analyzed by a coder, translated into the appropriate ICD – 9 CM or CPT/HCPCS codes with the help of coding books or encoders and entered into a database. These new coding automation tools assists HIM professionals in translating data by automated code assignment instead of manual review and translation alone. As early as the 1950s, the technology of CAC – enabled tools, particularly Natural Language Processing (NLP), started with formal language theory. Throughout this time, technological progress was slow but technology has rapidly progressed and is constantly advancing at an exponential rate since the 1990s. Coding is a difficult task because it has a four- dimensional complexity. First, coding rules’ volume and intricacy makes selecting the right diagnosis/ procedure code and code modifiers difficult. In an article by Yuval Lirov (2009), the author gives example to this level of complexity by stating, “ For instance, a claim will get denied if you charged for two CPT codes but provided an ICD – 9 code...

...assisted coding (CAC) software. Computer assisted coding is “software that scans medical documentation in the electronic health record, identifying technology and suggesting codes for that particular treatment or service” (Crawford). The CAC software uses either a natural language processing engine (NLP) or structured input to generate the codes. This NLP “electronically reads narrative text or voice documents and uses computer-based reasoning to identify, analyze and assign the appropriate code” (Getz, Lindsey). Structured input allows a physician to choose diagnostic phrases to which a code will automatically generate from that particular diagnostic phrase. The NLP based software has proved more advantageous that its counterpart, structured input. NLP uses artificial intelligence to analyze unstructured text using special linguistic algorithms and then support the correct codes with clinical facts. NLP’s applications also coincide with a majority of current clinical-documentation practice, and accept any document format into an organization’s billing system unlike structured input. The accuracy of NLP performance is one the most important features of the CAC. Moreover, the NLP engine is required to reduce “coding errors (the wrong code has been selected), false positives (the code is selected for which there is no documentary evidence), and false negatives (documentary evidence exists but the code was not selected)” (Kohn). After the CAC has produced its codes based on the...

...POLICY AND PEACEBUILDING FINAL PAPER University of Notre Dame THE LAND QUESTION AND DISPLACMENT IN KENYA: SUPPORT FOR EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NATIONAL LAND POLICY By William Kiptoo EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In 2010 Kenya enacted the National Land Policy following the promulgation of the new through the referendum. This was achieved through many years of consultation between the government and stakeholders of the land sector, mainly civil society organizations. The need for land reform was also identified by the Kenya National Dialogue and Reconciliation as key to long-term peace and reconciliation. The policy aims to address Kenya’s land tenure problems that have caused political violence during elections and mass displacements of the local population due to unresolved land grievances. Internal displacement and land problems in Kenya are a product of the colonial legacy, where the land policy favored the white settlers against the African natives. After independence successive governments inherited these policies and land became political tool to rewards loyalties further creating divisions and discontent. A myriads of land-related conflicts followed pitting communities against each other as political elites continue to benefits. The inability of the government of Kenya to adequately address the land question has implied that the basic needs of significant proportion of the Kenyan population are not met. The basis of the new law is address the root causes of...

...Improving Assisted Technology With Machine Learning Techniques Senior Seminar in Computer Information Systems December 7, 2011 Abstract An ever increasing population of persons with learning disabilities are continually in need of better ways to overcome the unique challenges they face in today's modern, high communication world. While Assistive Technology is making strides to close the learning gap between persons with and without learning disabilities there is still a long way to go before technology provides a level playing field for these challenged individuals. Many of the issues with existing assistive technology revolves around clumsy, inefficient interfaces that struggle to find a balance between ease of use and sufficient complexity to ensure that the proper sequence of instructions is implemented. Machine learning is on the cutting edge of programming practices and presents some significant improvement possibilities in the areas of natural language processing, pattern recognition, and interface design. Machine learning has the potential to play a significant role in allowing assistive technologies to be more adaptive to persons with diverse sets of needs. This paper will attempt to define some specific areas of assistive technology that could benefit most from the application of machine learning. We will frame the definitions by aligning specific learning disabilities with current and future assistive technologies and then examining how the implementation...

...“Choosing one of the case studies that you developed within your group during the class. Explain the cause of the person’s symptoms and construct a hypnoanalysis treatment plan and required outcome. ” Introduction In this essay I will identify and explain the underlying issues which have caused the weight problem presented by Ms. B, as described in the case study below, and devise an appropriate hypno-analysis treatment plan for her, with an attached screed. I will also include the potential benefits, possible contraindications and any ethical issues that may arise, in order to determine whether this is the best and most realistic course of action for her to achieve her weight loss goal. The case study for Ms.B is as follows: Case study: Ms. B is a 58 year old divorced mother of two who has come for therapy because she has a long held belief that she is the unattractive, overweight one in her family. She is the eldest of three children, with one sister and brother. She has always felt like she never received the same sense of approval and affection from her father as her sister and brother did. This made her feel left out from her father’s affections. She remembers that her father often made comments about her appearance, although Ms.B is aware that her father did this unconsciously. In her house growing up being athletic, attractive and slim had value. She believes her childhood feelings of being undervalued have affected her deeply and these feelings have carried...
