...Food for Thought “No pain, no gain!” Many of us have heard this quote by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Have you thought to yourself, “How does or how can I apply this to me?” Well I have and I am on a journey to push my limits and achieve more in personal strength and my athletic abilities. All my life, I grew up playing sports. My fondest memories were those long hours spent in the gym practicing my pull-up jumper in basketball or those sweat and tears left behind on the school track. I live for competition and know that health and nutrition in bodybuilding is vital. To be a winner, one must be the fastest, strongest, and most trained. Our bodies are our engines, and we must put the correct fuel in them to keep them going to work at their full potential. The three well-known, tested workout meal plans that I have researched are: Arnold Schwarzenegger, P90X, and Johnny Ahl’s plan. This paper seeks to explore what each bodybuilding meal plan entails and how these popular plans compare and contrast. I will begin with the history of bodybuilding and nutrition; then I will break down each meal plan one by one and compare the plans. The goal of this research will be to find out what it requires to gain lean muscle mass for strength and performance in sports. In fact the website, www.bodybuilding.com has 162 articles on how bodybuilding can improve sport performance in many different sports. Giving clear studies and research on how muscle strength and training play a significant role...

...More pain than gain Sep 14th 2006 From The Economist print edition Many workers are missing out on the rewards of globalisation RICH countries have democratic governments, so continued support for globalisation will depend on how prosperous the average worker feels. Yet workers' share of the cake in rich countries is now the smallest it has been for at least three decades (see chart 5). In many countries average real wages are flat or even falling. Meanwhile, capitalists have rarely had it so good. In America, Japan and the euro area, profits as a share of GDP are at or near all-time highs (see chart 6). Corporate America has increased its share of national income from 7% in mid-2001 to 13% this year. Like so many other current economic puzzles, the redistribution of income from labour to capital can be largely explained by the entry of China, India and other emerging economies into world markets. Globalisation has lifted profits relative to wages in several ways. First, offshoring to low-wage countries has reduced firms' costs. Second, employers' ability to shift production, whether or not they take advantage of it, has curbed the bargaining power of workers in rich countries. In Germany, for example, several big firms have negotiated pay cuts with their workers to avoid moving production to central Europe. And third, increased immigration has depressed wages in sectors such as catering, farming and construction. Most of the fears about emerging economies focus on jobs being...

...Analysis of the article “Turning Budgeting Pain into Budgeting Gain” John Orlando’s article turning “Budgeting Pain in to Budgeting Gain”, illustrates various issues, pros and cons, inefficiency of tools used for budgeting process. There are advantages like streaming the budgeting process by various steps involved and channeling them by assigning tasks to various personnel to achieve the desired goals. So the issue is not the lack of knowledge how to reach out the desired result, but how to use properly to achieve them. The disadvantages are found in the inadequacy of technology used in the tools and how to modify them to progress the process of budgeting. Orlando states that due to shortage in the accuracy of tools used, the budgeting process is ineffective. The author shows three things that portrays the issues of inefficiency in the budgeting process. They are 1. People Problems 2. Tools Troubles and 3. Process Pain The people that helps or responsible for the proper flow of budgeting are managers. The CEO’s and CFO’s have a higher task in the flow of budgeting process. They try not to take the responsibility because of the inefficient tools and lack of expertise in it. Another reason is the change in priorities and “what if” analysis in the process which change the course of achieving goals. Improper communication and planning lead to change in priorities. The managers get frustrated in starting over the budgeting process again and the extra tasks involved...

...Friginal Mrs. Chupp English II Honors 11/2/11 Pain is a Useful Thing Have you ever had to do something hard to get somewhere? Well in one way, shape, or form all of us have had to do something difficult to get where we want to be. Whether a student stays after school to get help from a teacher or an athlete wakes up for an early morning jog they are showing Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote, “No Gains Without Pains” that he wrote in Poor Richard Almanac. Franklin tried to show the people that you could not get anywhere without a struggle now and then. The United States of America, athletics, and even school have shown that there are not gains without pains. The United States of America is such a tremendous place to live. We could not have gotten this far without some growing pains. Even the great United States has had to go through some arduous times. But, because of those hard times we are here today. Our country has gone through a Revolution, a Civil War, and even a terrorist attack on our own country. Even throughout these excruciating times we have made it through tougher and better for it. American have become a super powers in the world and we would not have gained this much without some pain. All this pain didn’t feel good at the time, but it was worth it in the end. These facts prove Franklin’s point “No Gains Without Pains”. The United States of America is an exceptional example of how there are not gains without pains. All sports are difficult and very tough at times...

...I believe that no one can accomplish anything without going through some sort of pain. Nothing great in this world is owned without suffering and sacrifice. Great success is results from huge painful preparation. Pain actually sets the scale of gain. God Himself faced painful offering, His only Son just for the entire world to be saved. Jesus Christ suffered a lot that blood and water came out from His body because of the severe anguish in order for us to gain eternal life. That's the very reason I can agree with the statement, “No pain, no gain.” Even though our life now may be in pain, but the remainder of it will result in great gains that would define and make us until forever. Some other people think that pain only happens to those bad ones, but in reality, it happens to every person who wants to make and step up into something difference and better in living. We must come to think that nothing is going to give and provide itself for us- we must have to exert much effort and work for it. And if that means going through some pain, it doesn't really matters most, for if you work hard enough, you'll definitely get the best gain out of it. God hasn't given us the life to feel of always in gain sensation, but to learn about gain and respect to pain with accompanied life tests. Greatness and glory do not fall down like soft gentle rain from heaven. Great deeds are rewards of endless and infinite labor in life. The statement “No sweat, no glory” is closely similar from the first...

...Behavioral Finance: Key Concepts - Prospect Theory Key Concept No.8: Prospect Theory Traditionally, it is believed the net effect of the gains and losses involved with each choice are combined to present an overall evaluation of whether a choice is desirable. Academics tend to use "utility" to describe enjoyment and contend that we prefer instances that maximize our utility. However, research has found that we don't actually process information in such a rational way. In 1979, Kahneman and Tversky presented an idea called prospect theory, which contends that people value gains and losses differently, and, as such, will base decisions on perceived gains rather than perceived losses. Thus, if a person were given two equal choices, one expressed in terms of possible gains and the other in possible losses, people would choose the former - even when they achieve the same economic end result. According to prospect theory, losses have more emotional impact than an equivalent amount of gains. For example, in a traditional way of thinking, the amount of utility gained from receiving $50 should be equal to a situation in which you gained $100 and then lost $50. In both situations, the end result is a net gain of $50. However, despite the fact that you still end up with a $50 gain in either case, most people view a single gain of $50 more favorably than gaining $100 and then losing $50. Evidence for Irrational Behavior Kahneman and Tversky conducted a series of studies...

...late 1800’s and early 1900’s, America began the Industrial Revolution. During this time the main source of power shifted from man to machine. America was rapidly becoming an economic superpower and new methods of production brought benefits and good economy to America. But such progress comes with many burdens and pain. While many view the American Industrial Era as progress because of the philanthropy and labor unions, it was more pain because of the harsh conditions and unfair wages. Many believe the American Industrial Era was progress because of the philanthropy and labor unions. After all, no pain no gain, right? Well what did we gain? If nothing else at least some of those rich business owners donated to society. For example, Andrew Carnegie built “...libraries in towns all across the country-3,000 of them, costing...

...close to bedtime. Weight loss and exercise are also recommended. • Increased appetite and weight gain are often reported by FM patients. FM interferes with leptin, an appetite hormone, and causes it to work irregularly. The patient gains weight because he eats more due to an inaccurate signaling message from leptin to the brain. • Slowed digestion is common in fibromyalgia patients. Weight gain is a common problem in FM patients, even if they do not overeat. This kind of weight gain is due to lack of sleep, which causes a reduction in metabolism and increases the appetite for high carb and high-sugar foods. Hormone deficiencies (neuroendocrine abnormalities) increase sensitivity to insulin and decrease metabolism. Lack of activity and exercise can also cause weight...

... Firstly, Sciatica is the name given to any sort of pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet. When something compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve, it can cause a pain that radiates out from your lower back and travels down your leg to your calf. Sciatic pain can range from being mild to very painful. A slipped disc is the most common identified cause of sciatica, but in some cases there is no obvious cause. Less common causes include spinal stenosis (narrowing of the nerve passages in the spine), injury, infection or a growth in the spine. Most people find their sciatic pain goes away naturally within a few days or weeks, but medical advice should be sought if any other symptoms are experienced together with back and leg pain, such as weight loss or loss of bladder or bowel control, or if increasingly more pain and discomfort is experienced or pain is too severe to manage with self-help measures. Acute sciatic pain occurs suddenly and usually heals within several days to weeks. Its severity relates directly to the extent of tissue injury and resolves with over time. It is often called acute mechanical back pain, because the source of the pain may be in the spinal joints, discs, vertebrae, or soft tissues. Chronic sciatic pain, on the other hand, persists (lasts more than...

...pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and experience pain when not needed. The nurses and physicians lack of knowledge about how critical illness affects the signs and symptoms of children’s pain Problem Statement The clinical problem eluded that there is little known in the pediatric intensive care (PICU) settings of the nurses knowledge of pain in critically ill children. It is known that the knowledge of pain and quality of care given for pain alleviation is relevant. Not much is known regarding the nurses clinical learning patterns. Nurses used judgments in measuring pain in a variety of ways and it was found that their clinical judgments came from different levels of understanding and diverse aspects of pain. These assumptions lead to the aim of the study: to elucidate patterns in clinical knowledge development and unfold the role of the nurse as facilitator in relation to pain management in the PICU. (Mattsson, Forsner, Castren, Bolander Laksov, & Arman, 2012, p. 109) It is known that working in a PICU that nurses rely on each other and what they perceive as pain in a child may not be actual pain. Overtime clinical knowledge is developed with different encounters with patients and their families. The nurses need to focus more on their individual learning practices to a child’s pain starting on day one of admission to the PICU instead of waiting when the child is actually in pain. The nurses could then identify their true pain level knowing baselines. This study was significant...
