... 2177 words Choose a medical condition that interests you and research it. Write about the possible uses of hypnosis in the treatment of the condition as you see them. I will be looking at the impact that chronic illnesses have on a person’s life with particular reference to the illness Myalgic encephalomyelitis’ (M.E.) sometimes known as ‘Chronic Fatigue Syndrome’ (C.F.S). I will explore the role that hypnotherapy can have in pain relief and stress reduction. M.E. is an illness about which there is currently much disagreement among medical professionals regarding its classification, aetiology and recommended treatment. Estimates of it’s prevalence in the UK for example have ranged from 6 to 2600 in 100’000 across 10 years of study (1). Estimates by national health organizations say 450’000 people in the UK suffer. it occurs more often in women and is less prevalent among children and adolescents. Most research done has been on the assumption that they’re the same and this is gives good enough information at least for therapeutic purposes. CFS didn’t gained acceptance as a bona fide illness until 1988 because it is a ‘diagnosis by exclusion’ illness that can’t be tested for directly. Also the primary symptoms of fatigue, lethargy and muscle aches are similar to psychological conditions like depression, leading it to be dismissed by many as ‘all in their head’, a viewpoint...

..."Choose a medical condition that interests you and research it. Write about the possible uses of hypnosis in the treatment of the condition as you see them. Induction I have choosen to look at eczema for this essay. It is something that affects me personally. Eczema is a fairly common skin condition. It is an innflamation of the upper layers of the skin. It is seen mostly in children and affects around 1 in 12 adults. There does seem to be a link between eczema, hay fever and asthma, and as yet there is no known cure for it. Atopic eczema is a genetic condition based on the interaction between a number of genes and environmental factors. In most cases there will be a family history of either eczema or one of the other ‘atopic’ conditions i.e asthma or hay fever. The symptoms of ezcema can vary from being dry, itchy and inflamed to being broken and bleeding and raw. Ezcema is linked to stress levels in people and people who suffer with ezcema can develop anxiety around the way it looks and disfigures the skin, which in turn creates greater stress levels and ultimately leads to the eczema getting worse. It can be a viscious cycle. There is not a lot of research done into the power of hypnosis and other therapies such as meditation linked to eczema. The word eczema comes from the Greek word “ekzein” which means “to boil". The most successful treatment with eczema is steriod creams and ointments, one of the main problems with eczema is its extrememly itchy and this...

...Should terminally ill patients be allowed to choose? Should terminally-ill patients have the right to choose when to end their own suffering? There have been many debates and numerous amounts of case-law on the subject of physician-assisted suicide, yet it still remains a topic of medical ethics versus a patient's right to choose. Physicians are trained to heal the sick, care for the injured, and cure diseases. However, medical school does not prepare them when they cannot cure or heal their patient and the patient wants to die instead of continue to suffer. These decisions are individual and family decisions that should be taken into consideration by medical professionals. The debate between ethics and patient care and choice is s difficult one. "The debate over rights of conscience in health care has often focused on controversial issues at life’s margins such as abortion and decisions at the end of life" (Cheshire, 2011, p. 140). When a person has attempted all means of medical intervention available today and all the medical profession is able to do for them is keep them comfortable until that time comes for them to pass, inane human rights should allow that person to decide if they would like to humanely end their own suffering. I believe that there is both legal justification and a moral obligation of medical professionals to legalize the practice of physician-assisted suicide. In ancient times, physician assisted suicide was frequently seen as a way to protect one’s...

...Many people of different ages suffer from various diseases and some of them don’t have cures or pain killers. Other people are doomed to stay alive by only being connected to medical devices. It’s certainly a hard condition for these patients and no wonder that they might lose hope in life and wanting to end their suffering in any possible way. Its even harder for family members and friends to see someone they love and care about enduring such condition and not being able to help them. Many people with incurable diseases have thought about euthanasia. Their families do not want them to go through the pain any longer. One reason why these families should not consider euthanasia is because medical technology is advancing at an alarming rate...

...Many employers can obtain medical insurance coverage from group health plans that their employers purchase from insurance companies. They have riders or options that employers can purchase from insurance companies like dental insurance or vision insurance. Under this plan employers can take away some benefits such as certain coverage’s or prescriptions to help cut down on cost. At certain times of the year they will have what is known as open enrollment periods. This is when employees can make changes to their benefits usually through web-based tools. While some employees choose to obtain plans through employer-sponsored health plans, some companies choose to go with self-funded health plans. Self-funded health plans are used by employers to save money. Their strategy is to save money by providing medical benefits they have purchased themselves that allows these employers to create plans that do not require them to pay premiums to other insurance companies. The employer or companies with self-funded health plans have the option to set up their own provider networks or lease a managed care organization’s network. Most self-funded health plans will hire what is known as a third party claims administrators. The TPAs will take care of task such as: collection premiums, maintaining lists of members, processing claims, and paying claims. Under COBRA the cost of health plans are affected by allowing employees to continue their health coverage after leaving a job for a little...

...be very stressful for women. According to Socialist worker, women have the right to control their own bodies and reproductive lives (socialistworker.org). Therefore, I am pro-choice. Abortion is growing rapidly in America amongst women and their right to reproduce children, however women should have the right to choose to get an abortion for many reasons such as a medical condition, teen pregnancy, and rape. Women that are faced with medical conditions while pregnant are faced with difficult choices. Many women have medical conditions before they become pregnant, and some transpires during the pregnancy. Medical conditions can arise during pregnancy that may pose a danger to the mother’s life. Some women may opt for abortion in order to receive treatment that could save a woman’s life. Having a baby could pose a risk for the mother, the baby or both. “To force her at the risk of her life means to force her to give up her right to live.”(Gordon, John Stewart “Abortion” Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2005) Certain conditions can complicate any pregnancy. The child could also be born with a serious medical issue, such as Down syndrome, or many other medical issues. Many teenage pregnancies are unintended. An unintended pregnancy is a pregnancy that is unplanned, or unwanted at the time of conception. According to Brown and Eisenberg (1995) unintended pregnancy is both frequent and widespread in the U.S. The consequences of serious, imposing appreciable burdens...

...where the riders come in. what riders mean is it gives the employee the option to choose what health care plan they want to choose. These options may include vision and dental add-ons. Another rider could be services such as massages, nutrition counseling, and possible vitamin supplements. Some insurance plans would not cover these things. It just depends on the plan that is chosen. An employer may also choose the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHB), which happens to be the largest health care program that the employers use. However, the government controls this plan. This is the plan they use for the government workers, people who retired from the government, and their families. Another plan that employers use is the Self-Funded Health Plans. This is for many large companies to ensure the cost of the employees’ medical benefits come from them rather than buying them from different insurance companies. This plan is basically a self-insured plan but the employer sets the level of benefits the employee gets. For this plan they bring in a third-party claim administrator to collect the money for the premiums and make sure the employees are up to date and paying their bills. When employers offer insurance plans it is usually after so many workdays such as thirty, sixty, or ninety days. Then there comes a period called open enrollment periods which gives the employees the chance to choose their...

...During the election on November 8th, Florida residents have the chance to vote on new policies. In local and state government, the people have the final say on the referendums and initiatives that could change our laws and constitution. While people are focusing on presidential candidates, they should also be considering the amendments that will be on the ballot. With five Florida amendments on the ballot, only two are experiencing mixed emotions throughout the state. These being amendments that can legalize medical marijuana and potentially stop incentives for solar power. Those invested in the final vote are placing millions of dollars and hundreds of hours to sway the Florida people. ...the best for this situation. HMO Health maintenance organization or HMO, is a standard health care plan available through most health insurance companies. An individual with an HMO maintains their health by visiting their primary care physician on a regular basis for routine check-ups. Typically with an HMO, the individual will select their primary care physician within the preferred network. The individual will see their primary care physician for routine check-ups and preventive care. If the individual has a particular issue, they must go to their primary care physician first. If the primary care physician is unable to treat the patient, the patient will be referred to a specialist by their primary care physician. If the individual chooses to see a doctor outside their preferred network, the individual will be subjected to pay 100% of costs. Health maintenance organizations tend to be more cost effect for the insurance provider and less expensive for the patient. When choosing the preferred HMO, the patient must keep in mind several factors. The factors include how often the patient goes to the doctor, if they have a chronic illness, their age, and prescription drug coverage (WebMD, 2015, p.3). The individual must also determine which HMO is best by deciding how much they want to pay in premiums, co-payments, deductibles, and coinsurance (WebMD, 2015, p.3). The best HMO...

...Medical marijuana has been a subject that people frequently hear on the news. Entrepreneurs make products infused with medical marijuana to help certain people, for example, Whoopi Goldberg and Maya Elisabeth created medical cannabis products to help target premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menstrual pain for women. The two created the products because medical marijuana can help relieve pain for a large population of people. Medical cannabis is known to treat those with chronic conditions that they have to live with every day some of which include HIV/AIDS, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer patients. “In a placebo-controlled, 2007 study in the journal Neurology, Abrams and his colleagues found that marijuana is effective at reducing neuropathic...

... Strayer University HSA 505 Health Services Strategic Marketing Dr. Pica-Branco November 16, 2011 1. Describe the selection process you would use to make the most cost –effective and employee-friendly decision. One major objective of the new health reform law – the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is to ensure that the health insurance providers are regulated from driving up the cost of health insurance benefits. PPACA is supposed to allow families and businesses to choose the health coverage that is flexible and affordable. This new law applies to all health insurance plans. For example, in June 2010, the Department of Health and Human Services, Labor and the Treasury issued guidelines to enforce PPACA-which permitted children with pre-existing conditions gain coverage, and keep it, protect all Americans’ choice of doctors, and lifetime limits on care consumers may receive. (www.healthreform.gov). In order to select an employee benefit package for our company that is consistent with our current budget, cost-efficient and employee-friendly, our organization will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the current benefit plan. Internally, our organization will review the current benefit plan and the need to maintain or purchase another plan that will be in line with our budget, cost efficiency and employee-friendliness. ...of traits. Since thousands of traits are involved, the possible combination are limitless. Therefore, each person, from the time of conception, is endowed with a one-and-only combination of traits that will affect that individual throughout life. Some traits are expressed, meaning the individual will definitely manifest that trait. Other traits are unexpressed but predispose that individaul to manifest the trait under certain conditions For example, a person may have the gene for a specific hereditary disease but will develop the disease only if the life situation includes certain conditions. A person who has the gene for a disease but does not develop symptoms is a carrier; that gene can be passed on to the children, who may manifest the disease. A genetic disorder is one that results from individual’s genetic makeup. It may be apparent at birth, may appear as a developmental disorder, or may appear later in life as a disease or health problem. The study of hereditary has expanded rapidly and is making significant contribution to medicine and in the medical office. (Feelings about patients, 2012) CULTURE Culture is defined as the sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people from another. Each patient represents a specific subclass within the larger society. The major subclasses are race, religion, national heritage, and socioeconomic level each with its own beliefs and values, traditions, customs, and food preferences or prohibitions. Therefore...
