Science/Nature Essay

Space Invaders I hate to even touch the trash bins that are behind my house, but the trash has to be taken out every Monday night or Tuesday morning before Sneed, our trash man, comes to pick it up. Before I get a chance to open the bin I hear something scurrying around in the trash bin, banging up against the insides. I freak out! I don’t even want to know what is in there. I panic, screaming my dad’s name like he could actually hear me as he watches the NBA game in the front of the house in the family room. I calm myself down and talk myself into just peeping to see exactly what is in the bin. I grab the patio broom that lay against one of the back windows of the house. I get arms width away from the bin, take a deep breath, and spring the bin open with the broom as fast as I could. The top of the bin fell to the ground and skid towards the grass. I went over to the bin to take a quick peek at what could be inside. My heart raced as I tiptoed towards the trash bin, like I hadn’t already made a tremendous amount of noise when I tossed the trash top onto the ground. I peered over into the trash bin and there it was. A mother raccoon and three of her babies tucked away in the left corner of the trash bin hissing at me. I immediately ran back into the house and told my dad what had happened. My mom over heard the conversation and immediately picked up the phone to call animal control, because according to her she would die before she’d let a family of raccoons invade her space like this. I thought I was dramatic, but my mother took the word dramatic to a different and elevated level. Invading your space? They are a family of animals who live outside like most non domesticated animals that live on this earth. So what was the real issue? Granted, I did not appreciate being scared and hissed at by the mother raccoon, but are the instincts of an animal in nature so different from the instincts of a human in the “human world”? There was still one more important question needed to be answered. Were they invading our space or were we invading theirs?
The raccoon has been able to use urban areas as a habitat. The first sightings were recorded in a suburb of Cincinnati in the 1920s. Fruit and insects in gardens and leftovers in municipal waste are easily available food sources. Furthermore, a large number of additional sleeping areas exist in these areas, such as hollows in old garden trees, cottages, garages, abandoned houses, and attics.
I decided to sit my mother down after she cussed out the animal control personnel over the telephone because there was nothing that they could do to capture or contain a wild animal. At that point a discussion had to be held about the alleged invasion of space. I simply tried to make her understand this. Let’s do a role reversal. Hypothetically speaking, if our family; my mom, dad, brother, and myself were stranded in the wilderness, what would we do? My mom, being her bad-mannered self, immediately rolled her eyes at me like I was the enemy and spewed out a few choice curse words that was later said to be directed at the raccoons and not towards me.
Are the instincts of an animal in nature so different from the instincts of a human in the “human world”? As a mother, the well being of your family would be an instinctual characteristic in a crisis situation. Food, shelter, and survival would be at the top of the list if stranded in an unknown place. If there was no available food, would we really ask the fish that’s in a lake could we capture and eat him/her so that we wouldn’t starve? Would we ask the animals in the area could we share with them the fruits that grow on bushes or on trees so that we could survive? Instinctually we would take from what was provided to us in the unknown area such as a forest.
After eating, as the sun went down, shelter would become the next task that would be tackled. Would we ask every animal in the forest could we borrow a space on the ground to lie? If we found a cave or a deep enclosed space that was suitable for sleep, would we ask could we sleep there or would we take what was given to us? Now was this so different from the family of raccoons that managed to eat and sleep in our trash bins? I could understand the fact that as humans we do not know the mind or instincts of wild animals. They are looked upon as being pests if they are within a certain metric number of our personal property. But if the tables were turned we could also be seen as pests to the animals that live in the wild. My mother, being a pessimist, continued to only think about all of the bad things that could happen with the raccoons being on her “property” and called a professional wild animal removal business. They told her that since the removal of the raccoons was not an emergency situation they would be there in the morning to either remove the animals from our trash bins or set a trap for them if they were gone by the morning. I had a problem with both scenarios, but I didn’t pay the bills therefore my opinion would not matter. I went down stairs to my room which the trash bins sat right outside of on the back patio. I could hear the raccoons jumping in and out of the trash bins during the duration of the night. I felt bad for them because in the morning, they would be extracted from the trash bins. They would be placed back into the wild in some near by woods where they would end up needing to find somewhere else to eat and sleep. The next morning my mom woke me up and in a merry voice announced, “We no longer have space invaders!”

The pros of running a family business is the family business is your life which mean you are more conservative, because you don’t want to destroy your family business. In addition, the family business is built on the trust which means the more stable. On the other hand, the cons of running a family business are conservative which mean you don’t want to take risk on your business. Homework Is a Waste of Time.

...Debate topic: HOMEWORK IS A WASTE OF TIME. Introduction: We all hate homework, but is it really important that we do it? Is doing homework good for us or is it simply a waste of time? This debate sets out the arguments on both sides .Homework is an assignment that students are given to do at home. It might be a continuation of classwork or a new piece of work. It may also be preparation for the next class. The amount of homework school students get varies a lot not only from country to country, or from school to school, but often from day to day. For most the amount of time spent on homework gets longer as we go through our school lives. At the start of primary school we get almost no homework but it is often several hours a day by the time we finish secondary school. The most important thing in this debate is not so much how much time is spent on homework but whether that time is wasted. If it is time well spent then having a lot of homework to do may not be a bad thing. The debate should therefore consider what else school children would do with that time. Another angle would be to look at whether school could replace homework with something that makes better use of time. For example in Britain the education secretary (the member of the government who controls education across the whole country) wants schools to scrap homework and instead have longer days in school. The affirmative: Homework teaches us to learn on our own The main aim of education is to prepare us for the...

Is This a Waste of Time?

...not decide the fate of a person. Many believe in following the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Completing “good deeds” has become a socially acceptable task over the years. Society promotes good deeds, daily, through ASPCA commercials all the way to child hunger programs. Giving, caring, and including commonly benefit the one showing the actions. Whether it is giving money, time, or both, it can be considered as a good deed. Tithes are the most common and perfect example of giving. Malachi 3:10 states, “‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates and pour out so much blessing that there will not be enough room to store it.” This plainly states that a small portion of what is made and given back is promised to be multiplied into great worth. If members of the church give back graciously, the church may continue to grow, the children will receive the word, or people will become closer to God. I clearly recall the first time I gave an offering. It was twenty dollars out of my first paycheck and I was ecstatic, yet nervous. I knew I had given to a good cause but was curious as to if all my money would go there; I spent many nights praying over my money. Weeks later, I was desperate for the twenty dollars to pay for gas. At the gas pump, my card was not declined and I filled up half of my tank. As I pulled up my banking account, I...

Is College Really a Waste of Time

...Professor Laurie g English 102-V2 13 September 2001 Is College Really a Waste of Time When I was a child, I remember my parents always telling me that going to college was not only going to be an investment, but it is also the only way to be more successful in life. Yes, it is true that going to school would be an investment and in some circumstances successful in life, but what they seemed to leave out was that going to college may not be necessary to be successful in life. I followed this approach up until I entered my freshman year of college and realized that my parents were only telling me the half-truth. Yes, college is an investment and by going to college it leads to becoming more successful in life, but what they left out was that there is more to the equation. The other factors to the equation includes, what it I am going to school for, an economy of high unemployment rates, students debts, and most importantly the competition one will face in order to get that particular job. Entrepreneur leading Uncollege Dale Stephens in is article “College is a waste of time” for his special on CNN examines that with life experience, creativity, internet tools, college degrees are “unnecessary”. In “College is a waste of time” Dale Stephens explores how he has come to the determination that college is a waste of time through personal experience and argues why and how to avoid attending college. Stephens sums up the recent costs for college tuition and student loan debts...

College Is a Waste of Time and Money

...College is a Waste of Time and Money The essay “College is a Waste of Time and Money” by Bird is an excerpt from the book The Case against College which was published in 1975. The author tells people that college is not an obligation in our life. Bird agues that college is a waste of time because the majority of college students go to college for social and economic reasons. Very few actually go to learn and have the desire to be there. And he think students were not happy at all. They felt like it was time in a jail cell. It is just a stage which is taken by a lot of teenagers who don’t even know what to do with their lives. This excerpt is clearly directed towards raising awareness among the high school graduates concerning college education, as well as the general public. I find it quite puzzling that the author of the excerpt has purposed to demonize higher education and yet she has a master’s and a bachelor’s degree from two separate universities, which points out to the importance of higher education. However, this is not true. College is a fundamental stage during someone’s life, in which we are taught the basic skills related to the field which we are interested in. Furthermore, we learn to be independent and to make new friends, who will be able to help us in the future. Bird argues that higher education is a complete waste of time since the majority of the students attend college because of economic and social reasons. She further states that only a handful...

Space Explorarion Is a Waste of Time Debate

...ways to power humanity's insatiable desire for energy, to feeding the starving millions around the globe, and generally making life down here better before looking up into the heavens. It seems the authoritative powers have their heads way, way up in the clouds. The needs of humanity should always come first. While there are people on Earth who need help, they should be helped, rather than seeing money spent on sending robots onto other planets. Humanity is the number one priority; keeping the human race alive is a necessity. Alternatively, space exploration is a desire. If we put our desires before our needs, then everyone loses out on a better standard of living. Sure, it's great that NASA can elevate technology to the next level time and time again, so why not make technology that directly benefits us? as there are millions round the world who are starving to death, when people spend more and more money on space technology they should realize they are the killers. I Thinking that the budget devoted to space exploration is wasted money, I believe that this kind of exploration is a wild dream that we cannot achieve and the huge amounts of money are gone in smoke rather than to spend these amounts to relieve poverty in poor country’s and to bring better health care to the people who truly need it such as young children and adults who have cancer. For example, the National Cancer Institute spend about $5 billion A year on various cancer research to help people. The funding...

In biology, waste is any of the many unwanted substances or toxins that are expelled from living organisms, metabolic waste; such as urea, sweat or feces. Litter is waste which has been disposed of improperly. Feces contain large quantities of fresh and soft texturized waste products. Waste is directly linked to human development, both technologically and socially. The compositions of different wastes have varied over time and location, with industrial development and innovation being directly linked to waste materials. An example of this includes plastics and nuclear technology. Some components of waste have economical value and can be recycled once correctly recovered. Zero Waste America defines waste as "a resource that is not safely recycled back into the environment or the marketplace." This definition takes into account the value of waste as a resource, as well as the threat unsafe recycling can present to the environment and public health.  The word 'waste' and the act of 'wasting' are human inventions. Waste doesn't exist in nature. In nature, everything has a purpose. Waste was created by humans for short-term convenience and short-term profit. Wasting results in long-term harmful consequences for both humans, nature, and the economy. Where does your waste go? Landfill As you can see from the chart most rubbish in Britain goes to landfill.
