The Norwegian Rat

...The Norwegian Rat by Naguib Mahfouz Fortunately we were not alone in this affliction. Mr. A.M., being the senior householder in the building, had invited us to a meeting in his flat for an exchange of opinions. There were not more than ten people present, including Mr. A.M., who, in addition to being the oldest among us, held the most senior position and was also the most well off. No one failed to show up--and how could they, seeing that it had to do with the rats and their likely invasion of our homes and their threat to our safety? Mr. A.M. began in a voice of great gravity with "As you all know..." and then set forth what the papers had been reiterating about the advance of the rats, their vast numbers, and the terrible destruction that would be wrought by them. Voices were raised around the room. "What is being said is quite beyond belief." "Have you seen the television coverage?" "They're not ordinary rats; they're even attacking cats and people." "Isn't it likely that things are a bit exaggerated?" "No...no, the facts are beyond any exaggeration." Then, calmly and with pride in being the chairman, Mr. A.M. said, "It has in any case been established that we are not alone. This has been confirmed to me by the Governor." "It's good to hear that." "So all we have to do is carry out instructions meticulously, both those that come directly through me and those that come by way of the authorities." "And will this cost us a great deal?" it occurred to one of us to inquire...

Typically British and Norwegian

...Typically british and norwegian Manners British children learn formal politeness from an early age. Even the youngest toddler is taught to say “please” when asking for something, and “thank you” when getting it. Anything else would be considered very rude. Another example of politeness is the way people hold the door open for the next person; you will rarely have the unpleasant experience of a door being slammed in your face. Norwegians on the other hand are very straigt forward and doesn't use small polite phrases after every sentence. It is also uncommon to hold the door open for strangers. The thing with Norwegians and manners is not that we do not have any, but that they are somewhat different than outside of Norway or Scandinavia. The Norwegian "politeness" lies more in being friendly with people than in correctness. Traditionalism The British tend to stick to their old traditions, and are not very keen on making changes to adapt to European standards. F.exs: Driving on the left remains the rule in traffic and british judges are still wearing old-fashioned white wigs in court. Maybe this traditionalism comes from the isolated geographical position of the British Isles? Britain has tended to export its own culture rather than pick up new habits from others. Humour The British are famous for their well-developed sense of humour. Their humour tends to be verbal, with the use of puns and irony. Making jokes and teasing someone is often a sign of approval. There...

...Typical Norwegians «That is so typical Norwegians», you often hear, but what does it mean? What is special about Norway and the citizens there, and when can you say that you are a truly Norwegian person? Norway is a multicultural country with habits from all over the world. They eat taco, pizza and burgers, and they do yoga and play ice hockey. Even though they play ice hockey and eat taco, they do have some traditions that is typical Norwegians. Norwegians love nature. They are proud of the fjords and the mountain. They like to take a hike in the mountain. A typical Norwegian family etas taco every Friday and pizza every Saturday, but that is not traditional Norwegian food. In Norway, we have something called “Brunost”, directly translated is means brown chees. “Brunost” is used as increase on bread, often with jam underneath. It is really good! Importance of English

... Few outside Norway can speak Norwegian. This means that Norwegians have to use English or other foreign languages when they travel or study abroad, or work in firms or organizations with international contacts and activities. Many Norwegian firms even use English as the main language at work. The same is often the case in workplaces with foreign bosses or foreign co-workers. Besides that, workers in Norway often have to read manuals and other documents in English. If you look at the job vacancies in our largest Norwegian newspapers, you will find that many firms and organizations advertise jobs in English. They obviously expect the job applications to be written in the same language. Actually, all you have to do is turn on a computer and access the net to find out how important English really is. Another example is higher education. At your upper secondary school, all of the textbooks you use, except for those in language classes, are written in Norwegian. However, if you decide to go on to college or university, many of your textbooks will be in English, even if you are studying medicine, social studies or engineering in Norway. An increasing number of courses are also being taught in English, often because of international students or because the lecturer does not speak Norwegian. Just at the University of Oslo, for instance, there are more than 800 courses taught in English. English is also the most commonly used language in Norwegian export and import firms. Almost...

...Report on Doing Business in Norway Introduction This report provides all the information necessary for anyone intending to conduct business with the Norwegians. The information is based on interviews and observations. General appearance Norwegians are very distinctive looking people. They are all tall, slim, blond and athletic. They all have very blue eyes and pale skin. It is really easy to spot a Norwegian abroad since s/he always carries a backpack wherever s/he goes. Democratic Decision Making Process Norwegians believe wholeheartedly in democracy and there is no difference between salaries no matter which position a person occupies in a company. All decisions are referred to the workers and are taken on a group basis. Bosses should always listen to the needs of their subordinates. Adopting an authoritarian style of management would really be asking for trouble. The unions have a very strong position and the state plays an extremely important role in business life. All Norwegians support public ownership of services because they strongly believe that everyone should have the same rights, regardless of their income or where they live. Norwegian Pension Fund

...1. Compare the main features of what you understand to be the Norway Model with those of the Canada Model (as represented by CPPIB). • The GPFB is essentially a sovereign wealth fund, funded with petroleum revenues and integrated with the government’s fiscal budget. There are no specific long-term liabilities to service. The CPPIB is not a sovereign wealth fund, does not serve a government budget and its funds (at a contribution rate of 9.9%) come from employers and employees in Canada. Therefore, the CPPIB has future liabilities in the form of pension payments. • The CPPIB employs a total portfolio approach in which investment decisions are made by allocation of underlying risk characteristics across various investments. In doing so, it does not restrict its allocation to any asset class, as long as the risk/return benefit from an investment justifies its deviation from the Reference Portfolio. The GPFB however functions as a typical pension fund, where allocations of funds are across asset classes and regions. The portfolio would be rebalanced when specific asset classes deviated from a benchmark, hence restricting the percentage asset allocation of the portfolio. • The GPFB has only recently started an allocation of funds to real estate with the rest of the portfolio invested in fixed income and equity. The CPPIB, on the other hand, is more aggressive in its investments in illiquid assets, having gradually increased its allocation to infrastructure, private equities and...

...Eating Sugar The short story written by Catherine Merriman named ”Eating Sugar, was originally published in ”Getting a life”, Honno, in 2001. A third person narrator tells the short story and furthermore the narrator is omniscient. It seems to me that the time is not important in this short story. On the contrary the environment, the surroundings, are described into details. In this analysis I have chosen to focus on the description of the surroundings, a short analysis of Eileen and Alex and their relation, an analysis of the title “Eating Sugar” in comparison with the contents of the short story. Furthermore I have chosen to take the extract of the essay “A Small Place” and the picture “Tourists 2” into perspective. Finally I will discuss the globalization of the English language in the world today. In the short story we meet a family of three, Alex, the father, Eileen, the mother and their daughter Suzanne. Eileen works as a teacher in Thailand, where they live, and the moment she gets her Thai New Year holiday they decide to become tourists. They go on a trip with other holidaying Thais but when they decide to leave the paradise the small British family of three decide to stay so that they can have the small paradise to themselves. Alex and Eileen have been together most of their lives at least since the 1970s. Together they have tried LSD and they have also travelled to Yugoslavia hitchhiking - long-haired innocents as Alex himself calls it. Alex starts...

Rune-Magick The Key To True Quabbalah

...This field of magick sciences is considered less demanding when compared to other systems within this field and its lurking dangers are unsurpassed as well. Although, rune-magick is linked to Quabbalah, it is not identical to the system of Franz Bardon’s work, The Key to True Quabbalah. True to our cosmic system of duality, every rune has an opposing negative rune aspect or anti-rune, if you will. The following example should emphasize the true danger of this system: Should the rune-magus speak a rune that symbolizes love through the three senses (like Quabbalistic letters), he must have evaluated his character that no trace of the opposing trait to love, namely hate, still lingers deep and unnoticed within his soul. He must be convinced without...

A Diagnosis and Prognosis of Western World Society (Based on a Speech by Mlk)

...A Diagnosis and Prognosis of Western World Society Doctor Martin Luther King Junior was thirty five years old when he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, presented by Gunnar Jahn of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament on December 10, 1964 (Jahn). The reason for King’s nomination and award was for the doctor’s doctrine of nonviolence as a means of protest, specifically for social inequality in the southern United States that hit an apex in 1960’s. Upon accepting his Nobel Peace Prize, he made one of his most famous speeches, The Quest for Peace and Justice, of which he cited works and people of significance to recapitulate his ideology to his audiences. King’s lecture that consisted of these references was not simply intended to be for the audience at the Nobel Peace Prize Award ceremony, but rather he also spoke indirectly to politics, philanthropists and philosophers, opponents of the Black Civil Rights movement, and the devotees that had rallied for equality. The first discernible audience would assuredly be the politicians of the United States at the time of the Black Civil Rights Movement. The United States President John F. Kennedy (assassinated a year before passage of the bill in Dallas) was a predominant vocal advocate for the Civil Rights Bill that had a difficult time to be approved by Congress during his term. The tragedy of Kennedy’s death caused the loss of sponsors of the bill and stalled the passage of the new law. Lyndon B. Johnson assumed the role as...
