...of the world’s problems and solutions. It can be used to raise awareness for an important cause, but it can also be used to spread hate, especially between teenagers. Being a teenager, I can be the first to say that social media is how most teens run their life, but is it the right way? Austen McCann makes a brilliant point in his article, “Social media has allowed them to take their life online and instead of saying goodbye to friends at school and waiting to see them the next day...”Although social media can connect teens to the world and friends and family around them, it is actually one of the highest ranking causes of suicide amongst teenagers in the 21st century. As important as connection via the internet can be, social media does not have to be the primary source for teenagers. The average teenager spends a minimum of 2 hours and 20 minutes on social media every day. In Austin McCann’s Impact of Social Media on Teens articles he brings up that “social media is becoming more than a part of their world, it’s becoming their world.” Teens complain about constantly being stressed with homework, but maybe homework isn’t the main source of the stress. EveryDay Health magazine states that, on statistics, a teenager who spends more time outdoor is generally a happier and healthier kid. However, since 2000, the time teenagers spend outside has decreased significantly causing more depression and obesity. Not only does it affect health, social media deprives parents from having a...

...Cosmetic surgery on teenagers 1. Give an outline of the various views on plastic surgery for teenagers which are presented in texts 1 and 2. In the two texts the views on plastic surgery are quite similar. Both texts agree on the fact that American teenagers might feel that a lot of pressure has been put on them, they strive to be beautiful, but their ideal of beautiful is twisted and for a normal teenager almost unattainable. One of the major problems is that some teenagers find something they don’t, for instance they might think their breasts are too small, then instead of waiting for their bodies to be fully grown or just getting used to having a smaller, they tend to breast enhancement. The adolescents doesn’t let their bodies grow to their fullest, but take the less time consuming way of the surgeon’s knife. 2. How does Valerie Ulene engage the reader in the subject in text 1? Illustrate your answers with examples from the text. Valerie Ulene manages to get a good hold of the reader by introducing the article by telling a story about herself. She explains her own experience about having a large and crooked nose, to the reader, which made her stand out from the average teenager. She mentions that she actually dreamt about getting her nose fixed, but that it was not actually something she ever considered seriously. By telling us about her experiences about plastic surgery, she makes herself equal to those of the teenagers today, who consider surgery themselves. It makes...

...to figure out who I was. In today’s society we all live in a fast pass world, including our children. With this in mind it takes both parents to work to get all the bills paid on time and be able to save for retirement. What this has created is teenagers are held responsible for their younger siblings and left home alone. With this much responsibility, teenagers are growing up to fast and have too much freedom. With this freedom come more problems. Teenagers today are finding ways to deal with these problems and escape from the responsibilities placed on their shoulders. Young people are looking for anything to escape the reality of these responsibilities. Even though street drug use is down, drugs are easy for children and teenagers to get even from their own home. With the problems that teens face today, such as maintaining grades, finals, not having any money, flunking, and pressure to be perfect teenagers are having a hard time. Anything can be a problem to teens today, from acne to stereotypes and to include parents. (“Teenage Problems”, n.d.). Along with these problems comes the desire to hide them to be more like adults. Street drugs are one way to hide them. Hiding these problems can create drug abuse and lead the teenager...

...not agree. In a general overview, there are many cases that supports or contradicts the statement, so let us go further into this issue and take a stand. The teenage years have often been considered as the carefree years, free of worries and responsibilities. Being carefree has also been cited as one of the reasons that made teenage years the best years of one’s life. However, to what extent is that true? In my opinion, the best indication of being carefree is stress levels. According to a survey by the American Psychological Association, American teenagers experience their highest level of stress on an average of 6.5days per month. This is considerably low compared to countries like China and Singapore, where the competitiveness resulted in teenagers experiencing high levels of stress more often. Comparatively, studies have shown that people in their childhood or retirement years experiences far less stress than teenagers. However, despite these facts and figures, statistics cannot account for the truth as different people have varying perspective on the definition of being carefree. In truth, the fun and relaxing lifestyle that we all endear for is...

...The Effects of Teenage Relationships Different relationships affect teenagers in various ways. Friends impact teenagers almost the same amount as their parents. Teenagers go to their friends for help or to ask questions that they could not ask their parents about. Most of the time their friends give them good advice but then there is the down side when they put pressure on their friends to do something like to smoke, drink, and do drugs. In most cases they tell their friends how to dress and act when around certain people. Love relationships just make it even harder for a teenager to get a good education. Some start to fail in school because they are hanging out with their boyfriend or girlfriend instead of doing their work. Throughout adolescence, teenagers are positively and negatively impacted by several relationships such as friends, family, and love relationships. Friends have a big influence on teenagers because they can say and do many of things to teenagers who think they were friends. They also start rumors and take their friends girlfriend or boyfriend and have them cheat on their friend. Some go out to drink, smoke, or to do drugs just to have fun but some think of driving home and most teenagers do not even make it to their driveways. Some teenagers who are so depressed about their social problems even think about committing suicide. Most start to hurt others turn into “goth’s” by dressing in all black. Many of depressed people show how they feel by dressing differently...

...A main part of being this type of teenager is having problems with self-regulation. Self-regulation is the amount of control you have over the risks you take or behaviors that you partake in (Raffaelli and Crockett). When you have a high sensation-seeking personality you’re more attracted to risk and you have a better tolerance of taking risks. When you have problems with self-regulation typically you have a lower self esteem. This is because a part of your brain has developed in a certain way affecting your “ego-control.” Ego-control refers to the impulses and self control that you have. Self-regulation, which leads to the type of personality you have, results in a lot of issues down the road. One of these issues is sexual-risk taking. Studies have been done to prove that individuals who were attracted to risk had more permissive attitudes towards sex and engaged in sexual activities with many partners and had more experience with intercourse than teenagers with low sensation-seeking personalities. The study also showed that teenagers with high sensation-seeking personalities en gaged in sexual activities an average of one year earlier than those who aren’t (Raffaelli and Crockett). This research proves that Teenagers who have inherited certain personalities from their parents act out in dangerous ways when they have high sensation-seeking personalities....

...Andrea Holmes For Teens in Crisis, The Next Text Could Be a Lifesaver. (The New York Times, September 4, 2015) Case Summary The Crisis Text Line is a 24/7-text line for crisis-intervention, mainly used by teenagers. Crisis Text Line began when Stephanie Shih and Nancy Lublin started texting teenagers to help with their social advocacy organization, DoSomething.Org. DoSomething.org is a non-profit organization that helps young people start volunteer campaigns. Most teenagers are afraid to speak with someone close to them about what is wrong so they would rather speak to a stranger. Aaron Amrich received a message from a 19-year-old woman that said she had lost hope and wanted to give up on life. Amrich himself had suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder and depression so these feelings were familiar. The text line has more than 600 volunteer counselors around the country and Amrich himself has assisted over 400 people. The crisis text line is servicing the concern about the social, academic, and economic pressures that young adults are facing along with the rising occurrence of anxiety, suicidal thoughts and isolation among teenagers and young adults. Today the program receives an average of 20,000 text messages a day.
