Nursing, an Integral Part of Health Promotion
Introduction
Everyone in this global society has rights. All humans are born free regardless of race, color or creed. Everyone is entitled to these freedoms. In the pursuit of these freedoms, health is encompassed under these dignities. Everyone on this planet has the right to be healthy. This paper will examine the nurses’ role in helping people attain these rights.
What and Why of Health Promotion?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is defined as “a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1998, p. 1). Health promotion is the process of empowering people to expand control over, and to improve their health. Health promotion is an encompassing process- it is social, it is political, it is economical, it is ever-changing. It not only embodies measures focused on strengthening the skills and capabilities of individuals to attain their inalienable right to attain optimal health, but it is also directed towards changing global perspective as well. Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over the factors of health, thereby improving their health (WHO, p. 1).
Nursing Roles and Responsibilities
Involvement is essential to sustain health promotion action. Nurses need to acknowledge the essential role they play in health promotion. Nursing is evolving alongside the changes in health care. Health care’s focus has changed from acute care in hospitals to preventative care in communities. Health care professionals must collaborate with one another to help meet these changes. These changes in healthcare require the nurse to have a greater

...Health Promotion Pamela McFall Grand Canyon University: Family-Centered Health Promotion November 10, 2013 Health promotion as stated by Chambers & Thompson (2008, pg. 131), “Within the health promotion movement, empowerment has come to focus on promoting equality in health and public participation in decisions affecting health. Empowerment has come to mean a process by which: individual people are encouraged to assert their own autonomy and self-esteem sufficiently to be able to identify their own health agendas, rather than being told what to do”. Adults with the disease or the risk factors can prevent and manage both the disease processes. Health promotion within the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, patients can participate actively to help arrest the disease process and increase their chances of maintaining the levels of health for which they have achieved. Approximately five million people in the United States have Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and it is the cause of about 300,000 deaths per year (American Heart Association, 2013). The American Heart Association estimates that 78 million American adults have hypertension, a leading cause of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Leading the way to CHF and CAD is poor dietary habits, a sedentary lifestyle, and family history. Prevention starts in childhood but is not limited to children. Thus, the purpose of health promotion in our nursing practices is to enhance the patient’s potential to competent...

...head: HEALTH PROMOTION Health Promotion: Educating The Nurse and The Public Kurt Luedtke Grand Canyon University Family Centered Health Promotion NRS-429V Vicki Denson Health Promotion The Healthy People 2010 report designates nursing as one of the prime proponents of health promotion. Nurses are the largest single group of health care providers in the United States with an estimated 2.6 million registered nurses practicing (ANA) throughout the country. As the largest field of health care providers nurses will have a huge affect on health promotion and health education through community, hospital and legislative based activity. More importantly, health promotion will need to be a greater part of the nursing education curriculum as nursing education has had a heavy emphasis on acute care and health education but only recently has there been an emphasis on health promotion. The World Health Organization [WHO] defines health promotion as the process of enabling
people to increase control over, and to improve, their health (WHO, 1986, p. 1). WHO broadly describes health as well being in the social, the mental, the environmental and the physical attributes of an individual or group not just a state from being free from disease. The idea that health promotion can help achieve health by assisting individuals and groups to become more active in their own health by various means such as education, promoting positive lifestyle choices, health screening...

Nolan Pender's Health Promotion Theory

...Introduction Nursing researchers have been using Pender’s Health Promotion model to facilitate lifestyle changes, and bring about increased protection and improvement in public health. One of the major public health concerns for many nations is Diabetes. According to Ho, Berggren, & Dahlborg-Lyckhage (2010), 246 million people worldwide have diabetes, equating to almost 6% of the world’s adult population, with 80% of these people live in developing nations. This diabetes prevalence is further influenced by the aging population, unhealthy diet, overweight, physical inactivity, and obesity. In the 2010 meta-ethnographic research study, Ho, Berggren, & Dahlborg-Lyckhage, used Pender’s Health Promotion Model (HPM) to analyze and contribute to the understanding of what clients perceived as being important in an effective empowerment strategy for diabetes self-management. Meta-ethnography is a research method that use an inductive and interpretative method to compare and interpret multiple qualitative research findings revealing analogies between the studies to develop new concepts and models (Ho, Berggren, & Dahlborg-Lyckhage, 2010). Health Promotion Model (HPM) HPM is a nursing model which emphasizes the role of expectations in predicting health behaviors. HPM identifies three factors that influence health behavior, and how these three factors directly and indirectly influences health- promoting behaviors. ...Health Promotion in Nursing Practice What is health promotion? Health promotion is defined as the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health (World Health Organization, n.d.). Therefore, the ultimate goal of the health promotion model is to promote a sense of well-being, health maintenance, balance in all aspects of life and not just the absence of disease. (GCU, 2013) According to WHO, health promotion is creating the framework for health for all people in their everyday lives. (Fry & Rissel, 2010). For decades, the primary focus of health care has been on the care of the sick but in present day and time, the focus has broadened to determining the cause of illness and prevention of disease, thus enhancing the quality of life and life expectancy in general which can only be achieved by educating the public in health promotion which includes prevention and early detection. With improved health standards and statistics, health care providers have been able to conduct researches helping them isolate the cause, develop treatment and establish methods to decrease...

The research was carried out on an elderly patient with limited income, who have to decide which of the medications he will get refilled due to lack of income. Literally it means he is taking half of his medications prescribed by the physician or nurse practitioner. Another scenario is that of a community health nurse promoting health in Oak Park a low-income area. Three Levels of Health Promotion

...Three Levels of Health Promotion Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V July 13, 2014 A process that will enable people to improve and have control over their health is called health promotion. For social and environmental interventions as our focus we will need to move beyond individual behavior. It seeks development of individual measures and communities to enhance well being by changing their lifestyles. Promoting public health is an important role for the nurse by changing their behavior and prevents disease. Nurse’s roles include clinical consultations, patient education, prevention and follow up treatment of their illness. This will improve the availability of services in health care and reduce the symptoms of chronic diseases with an increase in cost effectiveness. Outcomes of their knowledge of illness will be self managed for a better quality of life and adherence are positive outcomes by nurses in health promotion. The individual perspective exhibits a holistic approach in health promotion with concentration or ways for patients and their families to make their own health discussions. Health promotion strategies provide health education by giving the information to the patient. The second concept of health promotion is related to partnership of the nurse and patient communication, groups and community participation. The third concept of health promotion was health and social policy where nurses were unfamiliar with these documents so they...

The wording may be different but the end goal of both is the same: producing a well equipped individual possessing good critical thinking skills which utilizes research or “using systems- and evidence-based practice” to attain it. With the uprising of different cultures and races as an integral part of the community, both talks about global diversity and how students are prepared and molded to understand the different groups from diverse backgrounds and be able to approach nursing in accordance and respect to status/race and culture. GCU: Global citizenship means that by understanding others, we learn to understand ourselves. AACN: global awareness is necessary to provide culturally sensitive care. GCU aims to incorporate the faith in the curriculum to equip the students with the knowledge on how to approach the population they serve and aid them in attaining wellness. In the same line, AACN utilizes multidisciplinary approach (holistic plans of care) to address the needs of the client population in health promotion and disease prevention. This is a holistic approach or strategy that is being utilized or used as guidelines for both to attain respective goals of both disciplines. GCU’s...

Philosphy of Nursing

...PHILIOSPHY OF NURSING This philosophy of nursing is assimilation of the author’s beliefs in regards of the metaparadigm through experience and understanding of knowledge. The author looks at the fundamental level, a theory which encompasses all or most theories. Attempts to view the theory as an interplay of energy, while looking at it in an atomic level. With the patient being the nucleus the primary structure and concentration of high energy while health and environment as different valence rings each holding electrons which are constantly moving in all possible directions all while orbiting around the nucleus. The space between the nucleus and the valence rings is nursing the spatial potential energy which unites the structure creating larger matter and ultimately the final product, the present material world (Seagar & Slabaugh, 2010). At the base of all matter is consciousness (Garon, 2011), therefore the universal fabric is conscious. A philosophy of nursing should be derived from laws that governing the universe and that is what the author attempts to do. Human Beings Human beings as defined by the writer are closely related to the understanding of human beings derived from humanistic nursing theorist specifically Martha E Rogers and Margaret Neumann. These theorist understood that human beings at a fundamental level are more than their biological makeup, they are consciousness. Sentient beings, or energy fields that are made up of patterns, holographic patterns...

Educational Preparedness

...Nursing is a widely respected and greatly needed occupation in our country today. Healthcare is constantly growing and evolving. Registered Nurses are a vital part of the existence of all communities. Nurses are required not only at inpatient hospital settings, but in schools, offices, community health settings, nursing homes, administration, and the list goes on! Despite both baccalaureate and associate prepared nurses taking the same board exam to practice nursing, educational advancement can contribute to the care of patients in all of these settings and aide in a more optimal outcome. The bachelors- prepared programs educate students on all the same topics as an associate- prepared program does. However BSN programs teach in further depth and promote professional growth. The difference in quality of patient care between the two degrees may not easily be observed to the clientele. However, much research proves that there is a correlation in patient outcome and the level of nursing education. One example of differing in the outcome of patient care is education. Promoting wellness and educating against disease and illness is an integral part of the nursing field. The baccalaureate- degree nurse is further prepared to promote wellness within communities and targeted populations. By individualizing a plan of care with interventions such as screenings, education and immunizations, a nurse can aid in the prevention of increased diseases and conditions (Sept., 2014). In order to...
