"The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour." I totally disagree with the statement. The logic is that how he or she behaved in the past will predict how he or she will behave in the future (Psychologytoday, 2013). People can expect the future to duplicate the past. Today, people can read the headlines about failed investor and failed executives and it becomes readily apparent that past behavior does not equal future behavior. Also a weighty evidence, the pionner of Apple computer, Steve Jobs, he successed in founded a series of revolutionary technology such as iPhone even he didn't complete his academic in college (Biography, 2013).
Individual behavior is how a individual behave at organization and how his or her behavior is influenced by other. A number of reasons can influence individual behavior in an organization. The most significantly are envirnoment, motivation, ability and skill, learning, value and attitude. An organization is made up of people, therefore an individual's behavior give a important influence power on organization behavior.
When the world become more predictable and change occurred over decades , past behavior could be forecast the future behavior. That premise was based on the environment would be remain the same even in future. However, the environment has change for keeping pace with the era. The factor of environment which influence individual behavior included social factor and organization culture. Social factor is means family and friend can affect an individual's behavior. Jerome Micheletta and Dr Bridget Waller, of the University of Portsmouth's Department of Psychology believe that the strengthen of friendship could justify human develop their social skills (Mailonline, 2013). Besides that, according to organizational psychologist Adam Grant, friends' behavior can make people more productive, and therefore successful, at work. In an experiment the youngest tenured professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania conducted, workers in a call center brought in 171 percent more revenue in one month after hearing a 10 minute story from someone who had benefited from their program(Globalpost, 2013).
Also, individual behavior will change with the organization culture. For instance, if an leader apply people-oriented leadership style in the organization, employees will tend to more collaborate and productive. Also, if an organization culture value and encourage employees to speak up without fear, employees will confident in expressing idea and opinion.
Besides that, when the individual was motivated, they would be change their behavior for perform to the best of their ability (Smallbusiness, 2013). Basically, employees will put more effort in work if can exchange reward from organization. For an example, Jane always late for work and leave early. She became punctual for work since the company announced to give reward for these employees who perfect attendance. In others word, motivation encourages employees to change behavior to show desirable responses which the organization requested.
Learning has taken place in the prima facie evidence in any observable change in individual behavior (Stephen P.Robbins, 2005). Learning is any relatively permanent change in behavior that acquisite knowledge or skill through experience and education(CIDDE, 2010). Also, ability and skill can influence individual's quality of performance and behavior directly. People normally will improve ability and skill in order to fit the requirements of job during this era of strong competitive. For instance, some companies will provide training to those older worker for learning information technology skills. Therefore, those workers can change some behavior in organization such as through e-mail send document and contact with customers. In additional, the older employees also can follow the pace of technology era and can develop an effective communication with those of younger workers with the similiar skill, and therefore improve the efficient of work. Besides that, when the employees' abilities and skills are fit to job requirement, they will gain confident in perform well in organization.
Values normally influence attitudes and behavior (Stephen P.Robbins, 2005). Suppose that a person enter an organization with the view that allocating pay on the basis of performance but the allocating pay on the basis of seniority is wrong. The person is likely to be disappointed and this can lead to job dissatification and the decision not to exert a high level of effort. This case proved the values of the person with the company's pay policies lead to change his or her attitudes and behavior.
Attitudes are important in organization because they influenced on job behavior. Early research on attitudes that people hold determine what they do (Stephen P.Robbins, 2005). For example, the employees believed that managers and bosses are all in conspiracy to make employees work harder for the same or less money, then it makes the employees change their attitudes toward organization and sense to try to understand their relationship to actual job behavior. If employees like their job, they would express positive attitude toward job and perform high level of job satisification and high level of job involvement. Therefore, the positive feelings which employees hold lower resignation and fewer absences.
In nut shell, in today's world, the assumption of the past behavior does equal future behavior is wrong because almost everything will change in this world. However, individual behavior can be easily predicted in some special circumstances. According LiveScience reports written by the experts at the University of California in Riverside (UCR), the personalities of people are formed start going to school and culminated in early teens that will remain with them throughout whole life. Apply a popular phrases "a leopard cannot change their spot" which means the natural character of human cannot easily be changed that lends some support to the point. For instance, the personality of an employee is agreeableness, he or she will tend to be cooperative, trusting and warm in organization. Besides that, habitual behaviors are hard to break because people already imprinted the behavioral pattern they often repeat in their neural pathways. (Psychologytoday, 2013). If one person instinctively reach for handphone the moment wake up in the morning, the person has a habit. In organization, some employees would like to record the things need to do in notepad, they will not change their behavior because they feel cozy when they keep doing the action.
