...OBJECTIVES After studying this chapter, students should be able to: 1. Define organizational behavior (OB) 2. Describe what managers do 3. Explain the value of the systematic study of OB 4. List the major challenges and opportunities for managers to use OB concepts 5. Identify the contributions made by major behavioral science disciplines to OB 6. Describe why managers require a knowledge of OB 7. Explain the need for a contingency approach to the study of OB 8. Identify the three levels of analysis in this book’s OB model CHAPTER OVERVIEW Managers need to develop their interpersonal or people skills if they are going to be effective in their jobs. Organizational behavior (OB) is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within an organization, then applies that knowledge to make organizations work more effectively. Specifically, OB focuses on how to improve productivity, reduce absenteeism and turnover, and increase employee citizenship and job satisfaction. We all hold generalizations about the behavior of people. Some of our generalizations may provide valid insights into human behavior, but many are erroneous. Organizational behavior uses systematic study to improve predictions of behavior that would be made from intuition alone. Yet, because people are different, we need to look at OB in a contingency framework, using situational variables to moderate cause-effect...

...Task 1 i. The allowance account is a contra account to accounts receivable, the actual bad debts of $35,000 are debited to the allowance account as they are written off. The expense recorded in the statement of comprehensive income therefore represents the balance-day adjustment upon assessment of the recoverability of the accounts receivable. Journal entry: Allowance for Doubtful Debts Dr $45,000 Account Receivable Cr $45,000 In determining cash receipts from customers under the direct method, the balance of the Allowance for Doubtful Debts account must not be netted off against the account receivable balance. Otherwise, both cash received from customers and cash paid for expenses will be mis-stated. Journal entry: Bad and doubtful debt Dr $35,000 Allowance for Doubtful Debts Cr $35,000 As is shown above, the bad debt expense should be ignored, since it is a book entry only and cannot be converted to a cash-basis expense. In the note showing reconciliation of net cash from operating activities to profit (indirect method), both the bad debts write-off of $35,000 and the increase in allowance for doubtful debts of $45,000 are taken into account automatically by the increase in the gross accounts receivable balance and the increase in the allowance for doubtful debts can be disclosed separately. ii. Depreciation expense is a non-cash item, which is included in the statement of comprehensive...

...Individual Assignment # 1 Building on assignment # 1, the purpose of this assignment is to help each of you deepen your understanding of how various organizational behaviours, particularly those at the individual and group/team level, affect and are affected by organizational culture and organizational change. Although it is an individual assignment in terms of the core work, it expands into a group project as you each share what you discover and learn with your project team in relation to Team Project # 2. Assignment Objectives: * Explore a particular aspect of organizational behaviour. * Explain the interrelationships between these aspects of OB and organizational culture and organizational change. * Assess how the OB factors you have studied might have been at play in the Transact Insurance Corporation as described in the case study. * Develop a basic plan to show how Jim Leon might have used strengths-based approaches to change leadership to generate better outcomes. Although this is an individual assignment, you are welcome, indeed encouraged, to collaborate with your team mates as you explore your assigned topics and find common themes and patterns in the various OB topics explored by the group. You will use your collective learning to develop your Team Project 2 presentation and recommendations. Each team member will explore one of the following six topics. Determine early who is going to research which topic. 1. Individual Behaviour,...

...Obstetrics and Gynecology Director: Sangeeta Jain MD Coordinator: Brandie Davis Overview: The Galveston Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship consists of 1 week Labor and Delivery Days, 1 week of Labor and Delivery Nights, I week of Antepartum, 1 week of Post-partum 1 week of Gynecology, and 1 week of Out-patient clinic. However, the structure of the course is often changed in response to student feedback, so please refer to your syllabus for details! The obstetrics portion focuses on labor and delivery, antepartum, and postpartum aspects of patient care. The weeks that you spend in gynecology vary widely and can range from community clinics to gynecologic surgery. This clerkship is highly dependent on how much effort you put into it, as evaluations from residents and faculty make up a significant portion of your grade. The clerkship is generally VERY organized, which you will learn to appreciate as you go through other clerkships. Didactics: There are lectures one day per week, which are mandatory. You will be excused from all clinical duties on your didactic day. Apart from the lectures, you will have quizzes over certain topics in Ob-Gyn (refer to syllabus for schedule). The course textbook (Beckman) is an excellent study guide for these quizzes, but make sure you have the latest edition! Other helpful study resources are the online APGO quizzes, Blue Prints, First Aid and Case Files. You are allowed to wear casual clothes on didactic days. Small Groups: ...

...academic effectiveness) , which builds on and extends a four-year longitudinal research study (Day et al, 2006). The study sought to identify key factors that contribute to effective teaching and pupil outcomes in primary and secondary phases of schooling in a sample of 83 effective teachers (45 primary and 38 secondary), 39 school leaders, and approximately 3000 pupils from 39 schools in England. The project had three main aims: (1) To describe, analyse and explain the variation in primary and secondary school teachers‟ classroom behaviours and practice using two different observational instruments, detailed field notes and pupil and teachers‟ perceptions, focusing on English and mathematics teaching; (2) To explore typical and more effective classroom practice of teachers in Years 2, 6 and 9, across different school contexts, professional life phases and ages in relation to observation of practice and professional, situated and/or personal factors which are perceived to affect observed practice over time; and, (3) To draw out implications from the findings of (1) and (2)above for policymakers concerned with raising standards, for schools and for teacher development. Data were collected via extended case studies of teachers identified as of theoretical interest from the VITAE research. One group is defined as more effective, those whose pupils have consistently performed above the expected level given...

...Case study chapter 3, pg. 117: Ethical Dilemma- Bounty Hunters Summary of the case study Rick Raymond is a Private Investigator who investigates employees at the requests of employers. Absenteeism is a huge problem for organizations that has left them desperate for solutions. One solution is to investigate. But one problem for employees is that sick-leave policies are different for every company and sometimes for different divisions within one company, leaving the interpretation up to administrators or employees. There some administrators which are allowed sick leave to be used for other purposes. These situations all present ethical problems for management. New York recently joined the list of cities requiring paid sick leave. Others include Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Long Beach, and Washington, DC. Other regions are sure to follow. Many consider paid sick leave an act of fairness. This is not a significant increase in expense, and it has a huge impact on the quality of life that the employees leave. 3-12. Discuss the ethical dilemma in requesting the private investigation of an employee ‘s absence. Though investigating ones employees to see the validity of their claims is legal, I see it as unethical unless used as an absolute last resource. Starting with the work place, there is no reasonable assumption to privacy according to the law. The idea is, if you wanted it not to be public, you would either leave it at...
