...Michelle Stewart Literature Review Landis FN340 30 April 2015 Introduction Fructose, commonly known as fruit sugar, is a major component of sweeteners such as table sugar, honey and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)1. Fructose is a simple monosaccharide that has been used as a sweetener in food and drinks, and current estimations suggest that sweetener consumption in the U.S. has increased to an average of 477 kcal/person, or approximately 24% of a typical 2000 kcal/day diet2,3. An increase in the consumption of sweeteners containing fructose has occurred in parallel with the increasing prevalence of obesity, suggesting that increased consumption of fructose may contribute to the current epidemic of obesity-related metabolic disorders, including increased incidence of the metabolic syndrome2. The metabolic syndrome (MetS) consists of a syndrome of insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, and elevated blood pressure (BP), and often precedes the development of diabetes4. In some studies, humans and animals that have been administered fructose have developed these symptoms, however they have not been observed with glucose or starch-based diets. Fructose and glucose are metabolized quite differently, and it has been hypothesized that this differentiation is the key factor in the development of pathologies associated with MetS5. Additionally, ingestion of fructose does not stimulate the release of the hormones insulin and leptin, nor does it suppress the secretion...

...Of Mice and Men a book written By, John Steinbeck. This novel is about two folks who come across many challenges of the world and between them. In the book, Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to indicate the reader with hints about other events. He uses foreshadowing with the Killing of Candy’s dog and Curley’s wife, also Curley poking Lennie during the whole book. An example of foreshadowing is when Carlson kills the dog, this is an indication that George will have to take action with against Lennie, both of them were put out of their misery and troubles. When Candy said, “I ought of shot that dog myself” (61), And when George kills Lennie they both wanted to kill them by their selves even though George went through it himself. ...Matthew Bullington 8/31/2012 AP English Period 5 Of Mice and Men Thematic Essay Violence in the novel Of Mice and Men is an everyday reality. With all the hard work that comes from working on a ranch, there always seems to be a significant need for masculine boastfulness which allows for fights, threats, and overall meanness. Violence in this novella is physical, mental, and emotional. Characters are so use to suspicion and failure in life that they will treat each other cruelly, willing to abuse the dreams and the bodies of others as though it were more normal to destroy than to build. In most ways, violence is a normal way for others to relieve the feeling of despair and limited possibilities that all go along with working on the ranch. For example, Lennie tends to be very violent when it comes to people making him angry. This tendency; however is watched over by George, who is supposed to make sure that he is safe and doesn’t get himself into trouble, but at the same time George is physically violent towards lennie because of his mental handicap. Curley, who is the husband of the only woman that lives on the ranch, tends to be very violent toward anyone that he sees as a threat to himself or his power, most of his rage however, is directed to Lennie because of his size. Curley's Wife is also the target of violence because she is seen as the tramp of the ranch for her flirtatious acts with the majority of the ranch men. With all these events in mind, we can paint a pretty...

...agencies and scientific centers. Doing animal testing is downright mean and animals shouldn't be treated badly or be caused pain for sake of human safety or experiments to cure diseases. Many people argue that humans are not necessarily superior over animals. Why should animals be treated as lab rats and made to suffer so that humans are safe? What is animal testing? What are the pros about animal testing? What kind of testing scientists do to animals? What is it used for and why are we doing this? According to About Animal Testing is a phrase that most people have heard but are perhaps still unsure of exactly what is involved. Whether it is called animal testing, animal experimentation or animal research, it refers to the experimentation carried out on...

...s and forced to breathe toxic vapours for hours?” (“Chemical” par. 1)” From cleaning supplies to harmful drugs and pesticides, chemical substances and products of all purposes are still being experimented on cats, dogs, mice, rabbits, chimpanzees and other animals. Right now, millions of animals are being the victims of human’s cruelty and inhumanity. Different kinds of animals are exposed to all kinds of tortures in order to research. Millions of helpless animals are being killed each year. According to Humane Society International, there is a long list of testing procedures that animals can be exposed to in scientific or commercial testing. “Some of them are forced chemical exposure, oral forcefeeding, forced inhalation, exposure to drugs, chemicals or infectious disease, tailclipping, food and water deprivation, infliction of wounds, burns and other injuries to study healing and even killing by neckbreaking and decapitation” (“Chemical” par. 4). Some of these testings are extremely cruel and require thousands of animals to suffer. According to Humane Society International, there is a test called “Development Toxicity” which requires one thousand three hundred rats. In this test a pregnant female rat is exposed, usually by forcefeeding, starting at the initiation of pregnancy and continuing throughout the pregnancy. She is then killed on the day before she is expected to give birth (on average, it takes twenty two days)...

...human health, the researchers planned to conduct a study using makopa, a native Philippine fruit, to be a component of a natural medicine for diabetes. Makopa (Syzygium samarangense) leaves have been found to have antihyperglycemic properties. The researchers thought of another way to produce the same result by using the fruit instead of the leaves. The fruit was put into a food processor, to separate the liquid extract and from the pulp. The retrieved extract was filtered using cheesecloth to remove impurities. The pure extract was put into a vial. The pulp of the fruit was sun dried, powdered using a blender. The resulting powder was combined with the pure extract. The extract from the pulp was the tea that can be orally taken by the mice through regulated feeding. Having produced two products, the researchers were able to come up with a pure makopa extract, and be able to apply current discoveries and studies to produce a medicinal product from makopa. Background of the Study The study was conducted to prevent and cure diabetes through makopa. Also, the study was driven by the medical history of diabetes in the families of two out of three researchers. Because of diabetes’ horrifying effects on human health and it is continuous effect on a larger population, this study aimed to produce a natural cure and prevention for this illness using a native fruit, makopa. Though makopa is found to have antihyperglycemic flavonoids, it has not been applied so this project...

...Can you imagine your best friend being with you for all of your life and then turning your back on you? of Mice and Men takes place during the Great Depression and is about two people trying to find work so they can live out their American Dream which is living on a rabbit farm. But one of the characters mentally illness gets in the way. So much so we don't know if they ever live it on. The color that best represents the story of mice and men would be an indigo blue because there are many points sad or dark times or parts in the book to shape the fates of the characters. The first example of a sad part of the book is the very end of the book where George must make a tough decision in order to continue on the hunt for his dream which is having a bunny ranch. After Lenny ends up accidentally killing Curley’s wife, Crooks, Carlson, and Curley set out to find the killer. George wants to stay out of the search but that would make him suspicious. Meanwhile, Lenny sits and waits for George at the spot that George told him to in case he were to get in trouble. When George arrives, he tries to get Lenny...

...wife in the novel Of Mice And Men in John Steinbeck. Curley's wife is one of the loneliest characters in John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men. She is the only woman aside from talk of Clara, (Lennie's dead aunt) There for separates her from the rest of the people working on the ranch. She is one of the outsiders, she feels like she can't talk to anyone or Curley will get mad. He pays no attention to her what so ever and uses her more as an object to show off. From her first appearance she is dressed in red which foreshadows danger later in the story, she is blocking out the light which also foreshadows darkening the dream. She has a big dream like everybody else, she wants to be in the movies she says to Lennie the only reason she married Curley was because she didn't receive a letter she had been promised to get into hollywood. She says to Lennie “What kinda harm am I doin' to you? Seems like they ain't none of them cares how I gotta live I tell you I ain't used to living like this I coulda made something out of myself.” Being on the ranch shows that Curley's wife's dream failed. Curley's wife is extremely coquettish towards the other men on the ranch she doesn't do it because she wants to offend Curley she simply does it because she is so lonely and wants friendship. Curley's wife dresses over the top with heavily made up eyes and mules, she thinks she will get more attention if she has a strong appearance. She has no connection to any of the men on the ranch and feels...

...Friendship is when you share trust, respect, and support with someone; someone who will be with you every step of the way and will continue to support you when failure becomes an option. With these qualities I am convinced that George is a good friend to Lennie in the novella Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck. Traits that George has portrayed throughout this novella leads me to believe he is a good friend In this novella, an argument has sparked, whether or not George is a good friend. George cares for Lennie, he made him throw out that diseased rat so that Lennie does not catch some kind of virus the rat could have given him. (pg. 6) In this way you can see that he cares for his health and makes him throw it out. Some people may say he did not have to do it so meanly, he could have approached that problem a lot more sincerely. I believe if George wasn’t stern in that situation it would have made room for begging, which makes it harder for the caregiver to say no. In this problem he needed him to throw it out so that it didn’t harm Lennie....

...Selecting appropriate quotations as support Text Analysis Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Pages 54+55 From : ‘Candy looked a long time at Slim to try to find some reversal.’ to ‘A shot sounded in the distance.’ Examine how John Steinbeck effectively generates tension in the above extract. Response : The above extract takes place while the men are relaxing in the bunkhouse and Carlson has just suggested shooting Candy’s old and sickly dog. Candy desperately hopes that he will receive support from the group’s natural leader : ‘Candy looked a long time at Slim to try to find some reversal.’ Sadly, Slim agreed with Carlson therefore Candy was forced to accept it was time to put his dog out of its misery : ‘At last, Candy said softly and hopelessly, ‘Awright – take ‘im’ ‘. His gentle tone and fatalistic acceptance generate a feeling of deep sympathy for Candy. Tension is now building as everyone waits for Carlson to shoot the dog outside. Steinbeck continues to convey an uneasy atmosphere by using the absence of sound : ‘The silence came into the room. And the silence lasted.’ This suggests that either no-one knew what to say to Candy or that whatever was said would be misplaced. The uneasy feeling is shared by everyone because we all feel so sorry for Candy whose best friend is about to be executed. It is George who finally breaks the silence by humourously saying : ‘I bet Lennie’s right out there in the barn with his pup.’ However, this serves...

...Three ships: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery sailed across the sea from England to the new land which would become known as America carrying 104 English men and boys, some of which were a part of the Virginia London Company. They were seeking religious freedom, adventure, wealth and a chance at a new life. They hoped to find gold and riches in the new land. While on their journey they encountered many obstacles such as storms, piracy and diseases such as scurvy. They landed on the east coast of America near the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia on December 6, 1606. After arriving in Virginia, the English settlers encountered many difficulties. They drank water from salty rivers which caused dehydration and ultimately contributed to the deaths of many of the settlers. They encountered difficulties with famine, specifically the Starving Time in the fall of 1609 which also contributed to many deaths. They also experienced anxiety and uncertainty with the natives and Spaniards. Many deaths was also the result of encounters with the natives....

...experiments include force feeding animals with potentially harmful substances, exposure to radiation, surgically removing animal organs, forcing animals to inhale toxic gases, and subjecting animals too frightening situations to create anxiety and depression. Animal testing may have positive effects on society, but the negative factors outweigh the positive because it’s cruel and inhumane, different biologists have different results, and the drugs that pass animal test are not necessarily safe to humans. Animal testing is cruel and inhumane because live animals are subjected to basic torture, and the endpoint is death. “I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men” (leonardo Da Vinci). According to Humane Society International, “animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, and "killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means’" (Humane Society). Animals are living creatures that do not cause humans any harm, but yet humans manage to treat these defenseless creatures with a new level of disrespect. “Why test cosmetics on some poor animal who hasn’t done anything wrong” (Ellen DeGeneres). It’s important that these animals are alive because they...
