“Writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work. And enriching your own life, as well. It’s about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy…” (King 269). Writing is a privilege, not a chore. It isn’t something that can be done by sitting down once and writing a bestseller. To become great, you must love to read, and write, and you must do it daily, take as few days off as possible, and keep your skill sharp. Perhaps worse than the repeated puncturing of his eardrums as a child. Anyway, as a result, he had extreme difficulty writing. He said, “There was no inspiration… no miraculous breakthrough… no sense of exhilaration.” (King 268). After he was hit, he didn’t write much. He wasn’t able to. As a result, his writing was strained, and had become amateur once again. He kept writing, and things, “continued to get better.” (King 269). He proved that practice and skill is what makes a subjectively great writer. While on the topic of subjectiveness, King wrote about how it is impossible to please everybody. Not every reader will enjoy the same type of literature. He said that you should only write for your, “Ideal Reader.” (King 215). While writing his first drafts, King said he is, “writing only for myself and my Ideal Reader.” (King 229). He lets his readers know outright that not everyone can be pleased with one book, and that preferences are subjective. Stephen King has the authority to say the things he said in the book by becoming the writer he is. But how did he become the writer he is? When he was a child, he was
