Open Mind, Open Life

...What does it mean to be open-minded? What is considered being open-minded? Well to make it short being open-minded is witnessing or being a part of something that is outside of your comfort zone, it’s basically breaking the boundaries that you've set up yourself. Everyone has their own perspective, what they believe is right and wrong, and how they act upon themselves and others but hardly do they ever question themselves. Question whether they are happy with their life, if they happy with their values and beliefs, and if they are happy with how they view the world. Becoming an open-minded person is a bit more difficult than you think and tough at times because as a toddler we are raised upon beliefs and values of our household and family so we tend to surround ourselves with people who share the same values and beliefs. The challenge of becoming open-minded is the fact that we faced with ideas that differ from our own, and since we have strong views on specific topics it’s hard for someone to stray from those opinions. I strongly agree that believing in your own opinions is a great thing and doesn't mean you have a closed mind but I've noticed that opening the door to your mind and letting new ideas and beliefs in has it benefits. During my seventeen years of living I've noticed seven benefits to becoming open minded which has carved the person that I am today. Number One is letting go of control. By letting go of control of your thoughts you allow yourself to experience ideas...

Open Innovation

...What is open innovation? What advantages does it bring? How does it contrast with the “closed” innovation model? In open innovation, the company does not depend on its internal research alone, it commercializes innovation from other firms as well. There is no boundary within which the company works, the workforce is highly mobile and every idea is welcome. Also the market segments are also not isolated, if an innovation caters to the needs of a different segment, the company might still go ahead and commercialize it that is the company will be willing to invest in a different business as well. In company that follows open innovation model, you can make initially promising idea into a really successful commercial product with a little tweaking whereas in closed innovation these ideas are disposed completely. The contrast between the two models is that in open innovation the company that commercializes the product doesn’t necessarily discover the original idea. In closed innovation model, the company believes that not sharing the IP will bring in profits whereas in open innovation model sharing the IP and others using their IP is seen as profit making. What types of innovators are identified by the article? What are their distinctive features? The Open Boat

...In the span of your life time, you will certainly be sure to encounter some struggle against nature. Your struggle may be as little as trying to change a tire in the middle of a rain storm or as severe as expressed in Stephen Crane’s story The Open Boat. From the beginning of time man has pondered the question as to “Why was I placed here on Earth?” We tend to see ourselves as being important, that we have to leave our mark in order for life to have some sort of meaning. In this story, four men, known simply as the captain, the oiler, the correspondent, and the cook, become stranded in the sea in a small boat. Together they are forced to bare the torments of one of Mother Nature’s toughest challenges, the open sea. In this process these four men learn much about nature and just how little they are on Earth. One of the characters, the correspondent, comes to the realization that nature is indifferent despite the struggles of the individuals, “When it occurs to a man that nature does not regard him as important, and that she feels she would not maim the universe by disposing of him…” (para, 174). The captain, who is seen as a symbol of strength to the other men on the boat, has doubt as to whether they can make it to shore safely, “Then the captain, in the bow, chuckled in a way that expressed humor, contempt, tragedy, all in one. “Do you think we’ve got much of a show now, boys?” (para, 25). The men in the boat are still upset with what fate has dealt them and seem...

The bond that the character had created allowed them to be rescued. The story reveals a tremendous amount of brotherhood throughout the story, but in order to appreciate the crew's challenge to achieve brotherhood one must first realize the diversity of people on the boat. The crew’s willingness to follow the captain orders display how brotherhood is first display in the story. They accomplished brotherhood by placing their trust in the captain to get them back to shore. Likewise, we see them display more brotherhood when they come together to make a sail. Due to the strong wind the crew devised a plan to use the captains’ jacket and one oar to create a sail. The captain place is confidant in their ideas to make a sail out of his jacket that allow them sail. The correspondent and Oilier shows brotherhood by working together after the build the sail and only had one oar. Near the end of the story the captain exhibits so true brotherhood. The Open Boat

...In Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat”, Crane demonstrates his idea that man cannot even attempt to best nature by the isolation and trials of the men in nature, the hardships that even the best of men face, and the lack of understanding of nature while isolated in the sea. Stephen Crane starts off the story by leaving the men in isolation from the world, a test, which they fail, if they could best nature without help except for their abilities as humans not connected to nature. The men, from the beginning of the journey feel despair. Even though they rowed for so long all the men discovered “that after successfully surmounting one wave you discover that there is another behind it” (Crane 604). The men knew from the beginning of the journey towards safety, that the waves in the sea, an example of nature, would best the men from its endurance. The men depended on the wind that nature provided them because they rode in a dingy that “man ought to have a bath-tub larger than the boat which” (603) they rode in. Second, the men cannot reach the shore by any means. Even though the “light-house had been growing slowly larger” (607), the men never reach the light-house. The lack of ability to reach the light-house shows that the men are not in touch with nature, in this case the sea, leading to their inability to reach the island. Lastly, the man cannot converse with the other men on shore, showing nature’s ability to disrupt man’s methods for communication. The men seemed dazzled and confused...

Open Source

...What Is Open Source? Technically, “open source” means software that issupplied with the original code in which it was written allowing others to view, modify, adapt, and improve this code. This can include software that cannot be redistributed without explicit permission (and often a payment) to the software owner. Most people now define “open source” more narrowly to as software with the following further characteristics: • It is protected by copyright, but not patents. • It has a “copy-left” license (GNU license or similar), which states that it can be redistributed for no charge, but the source code and modifications must be licensed out under the same terms that it was licensed in. Sample licenses are available at http://www.opensource.org. Please note, that it is acceptable to sell commercial software in a bundle with this “open source” software. Open source software is not the same as “shareware” or “freeware” which often does not come with source code and has zero cost as its defining characteristic. Open source software, may or may not be zero cost. The benefit of open source software is that when people are allowed to read, distribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves and gets better. Open Source in Brief In practice, a typical open-source project uses a web or other internet site as the repository for the source code, documentation, discussions, design documents, bug and issue lists, and other artifacts associated...

The Open Boat

...Alec Orozco Mr. Tom Treffinger ENG 102-005 4 March 2015 Correspondent’s Epiphany in “The Open Boat” In Stephen Crane’s story “The Open Boat”, Crane seems to focus on the struggle of man versus nature. The struggle is shown throughout the whole story, but is most clearly seen when the correspondent seems to be on the verge of death. The correspondent begins to see how nature “views” humanity. The four men who are on the boat all start to see that though they may have worked hard to live their lives, nature does not seem to care who lives or dies. In “The Open Boat”, there are four men trying to survive on a small boat there believe is smaller than a bathtub should be (Crane, 339). This posed a problematic situation because the “waves were most wrongfully and barbarously abrupt and tall, and each froth-top was a problem in small-boat navigation” (339). During this trial in the four men’s lives, the correspondent begins to contemplate on various things about their situation and his own life. One of the correspondent’s thoughts is “’If I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and trees’”(350). The meaning behind this particular thought is the correspondent is wondering why he is living his life so long just to have it taken away for no real reason. Then the correspondent begins to ponder the death of “A soldier of the...

Open Systems Concept There are many models that affect business and one of them that has been examined for more than fifty years is the systems model of business. In this paper, the authors will examine what the open systems model is versus the closed systems model. The authors will also explain how these systems impact decision-making within an organization, and how The Vera Bradley Company makes decisions in light of using the open systems approach. “A system is commonly defined as a group of interacting units or elements that have a common purpose” (Heil, 2006). Systems theory can be divided into two categories: closed versus open systems. Ludwig von Bertanlanffy, a biologist, initially developed open system theory and it became readily apparent that it was immediately applicable across all disciplines. It defines the concept of a system, where "all systems are...

Systems theory is a broad perspective that allows managers to examine patterns and events in the workplace. This helps managers to coordinate programs to work as a collective whole for the overall goal or mission of the organization rather than for isolated departments. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria: 1. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale. 2. Source Code The program must include source code, and must allow distribution in source code as well as compiled form. Where some form of a product is not distributed with source code, there must be a well-publicized means of obtaining the source code for no more than a reasonable reproduction cost preferably, downloading via the Internet without charge. The source code must be the preferred form in which a programmer would modify the program. Deliberately obfuscated source code is not allowed. Intermediate forms such as the output of a preprocessor or translator are not allowed. 3. Open Source Software

...Open Source Software Intro While knowledge is the public good, there is discussion whether or not all knowledge should free for public. Today society chose suffer the loss of knowledge for certain years. They use intellectual property law to encourage individuals to invest in research and development and creating knowledge they can profit. We want to analyze an alternative way in distributing knowledge specifically open source software and how useful it is to both creators and society. Definition and characteristics Open source licenses promise to everyone what many in the community refer to as software freedom. The terminology of Freedom is emotionally satisfying, but it has proven to be very confusing. Not that software freedom isn’t definable. The Free Software Foundation lists four essential kinds of software freedom: 1. The freedom to run the software for any purpose 2. The freedom to study how the software works and to adapt it to your needs 3. The freedom to redistribute copies of the software 4. The freedom to improve the software and distribute your improvements to the public Confusion about the term Freedom was the very reason the term open source was created. The newer term refers to an important concept well understood by anyone who has ever written computer software: Programmers write source code to direct computers to perform specific tasks, while the computer itself takes care of the routine task of translating the source code into an...

Open Source Licensing

...What is Open Source? Open Source is a philosophy regarding software copyright under which one software developer is granted permission to use another developer’s code without having to individually ask permission. It may also refer to the genre of software that encompasses that philosophy and utilizes open source licensing. Why is Open Source good? There may be several reasons why a developer may favor the Open Source philosophy. Primarily, Open Source fosters creativity. Software products can often require an overwhelming amount of code for one individual or even a few individuals to write, especially if all that code needs to be original so that it does not infringe on another person’s copyright. This may not be a problem for large companies with armies of engineers. But this can be an insurmountable hurdle for individuals or smaller groups. Open source licensing enables developers not only by providing sets of code that can be appropriated towards their final vision, but it also enables others to actively contribute to or improve upon another developer’s product. A great metaphor for the effect of Open Source is Wikipedia.org. Wikipedia’s content is licensed under a Creative Commons license, which achieves the same goals as open source software licenses. Much like encyclopedia volumes, which are collections of articles that contribute to the whole set, software products may be seen as a collection of coded functions. Traditionally, each article of an encyclopedia...

Open and Closed Source

...Open and Closed Source Systems Students Name POS/355 Date Instructors Name Open and Closed Source Systems Open and closed sources is a term that not many people know the difference. According to Damicon (2003-2009), “True-open-source development requires that a community of software engineers band together to work on the software.” What the company is stating is the more minds are used to develop the software the better it will be. Now a closed source is a little different. “Closed-source programs are owned by someone (or some organization) and distributed through a variety of retail channels including the owner's website Damicon (2003-2009).” Basically a closed source is the complete opposite of an open source. Now that the two are clearly defined to a better understanding users will be able to tell the difference. Open sources are gathering of many users and putting the knowledge and experiences that they have obtained over the years and used to make software. Like the saying goes, “Two heads are better than one (Two heads better than one 2014).” Typically open sources are free of charge and can easily be download. For example most people have at least either downloaded one of these browsers; Goggle Chrome, Firefox, Java, or BitTorrent. There are many more open source systems, but these that were just mention can be installed in MAC OS, Microsoft Windows, and LINUX. The positive about having open source is that it is able to be customized to the users liking and can...

The Components of Open Theism

...THE COMPONENTS OF OPEN THEISM INTRODUCTION Perhaps one of the most dangerous doctrines that has influenced the church over the last few centuries is the doctrine of open theism (OT). Early Christianity until today has been strengthened and built on the confidence that God knows everything about the future. In fact, great hymns have been written claiming that God knows the future. Excellent theologians have written and supported this doctrine that elevates God as the supreme being over all. Over the last couple of centuries, a doctrine has invaded the evangelical world and has put the traditional view of God’s foreknowledge at risk. This doctrine has been called open theism. This doctrine has gained much attention in the evangelical world as it seeks to answer the questions pertaining to God’s foreknowledge. The question of God’s omniscience is at stake with the doctrine of open theism considering they claim that God is incapable of knowing what happens in the future. Therefore, it results in a lack of trust for Him and His involvement in the lives of people. The purpose of this research is to look at the components of open theism and comparing it to the historical theology of deism. DEFINING OPEN THEISM What is open theism? Open theism has been emerging for the past couple of decades. Bruce Ware, the vocal theologian who does not believe in open theism defines it as “the belief that the future is open and hence not foreknown or foreordained.” At first, it seems absurd for...
