...I The Free Medical Clinic of Newberry County, Inc. opened its doors in December, 2004 to serve the needs of Newberry County residents without access to professional health care due to lack of income or adequate health insurance. Since the opening of the clinic hundreds of Newberry citizens have received care from volunteer physicians and dentists on a wide range of medical conditions. The Clinic's services include medical and dental care, as well as prescriptions” (Newberry Clinic Organization, 2008). Medical Need Dr. Gene Epting and Bobby Summer along with a diverse county wide organizing committee were responsible for helping bring the need of this clinic to other major groups in and outside of the community. ...229 Reducing Consultation Waiting Time and Overtime in Outpatient Clinic: Challenges and Solutions Zhu Zhecheng Health Services & Outcomes Research, Singapore Heng Bee Hoon Health Services & Outcomes Research, Singapore Teow Kiok Liang Health Services & Outcomes Research, Singapore Chapter 11 ABSTRACT Outpatient clinics face increasing pressure to handle more appointment requests due to aging and growing population. The increase in workload impacts two critical performance indicators: consultation waiting time and clinic overtime. Consultation waiting time is the physical waiting time a patient spends in the waiting area of the clinic, and clinic overtime is the amount of time the clinic is open beyond its normal opening hours. Long consultation waiting time negatively affects patient safety and satisfaction, while long clinic overtime negatively affects the morale of clinic staff. This chapter analyzes the complexity of an outpatient clinic in a Singapore public hospital, and factors causing long consultation waiting time and clinic overtime. Discrete event simulation and design of experiments are applied to quantify the effects of the factors on consultation waiting time/clinic overtime. Implementation results show significant improvement once those factors are well addressed. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-60960-872-9.ch011 Copyright © 2012, IGI Global. ...| Overcoming The Challenges | What lies ahead for the new pediatric satellite clinic | | Abstract The purpose of this document is to discuss the opening of a new pediatric satellite clinic in a place of my choosing. For this document, I will be choosing Charlotte, NC; which is close to my hometown. This essay will discuss several challenges that lay ahead with this project, such as; recruiting and retaining staff; types of services and resources; building rapport with the community and surrounding counties; finances and profitability of the clinic; technology; and compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations. These challenges will also be further broken down and explain ways that administration can overcome these challenges so that the project is successful. Lastly, there will be a discussion on specific skills and knowledge that administration needs to utilize when opening the new clinic and to manage staff. The decision to expand the Pediatric Community Care Center has provided other communities the chance to receive quality care close to their home. This decision also poses great risks and challenges. Overcoming these challenges will be no easy feat; however, with careful consideration and implementing the right course, this project should be a success. The new Pediatric Satellite Clinic will be located in Charlotte, North Carolina. This area has a population of around 773 thousand, with around 20% of that population being children...

...The Public needs to Know - Draft Version Tonya Addison Dr. Ryan ENG115 11/02/2014 Opening a free clinic can be a very good way to give back to the community, but is also a challenging thing to do. There are many legal, supply, volunteer recruitment, fund-raising and management issues to be considered. First step would be to recruit a team consisting of doctors, office help, an accountant and legal attorney. Keep in mind your legal help should be familiar with medical laws and setting up nonprofit businesses. Be sure to get someone with plenty of experience in knowledge of how to fund programs, like Medicare or other local, state and federal programs. You should advertise in the newspaper, with local businesses and at local hospitals to bring volunteers. It would be good to hold meetings to discuss your future clinic needs and requirements of the staff. It would also be a great idea to consider recruiting volunteers for cleaning, reception and office work from local high schools or universities. Second decide on the main services that your clinic will offer which should be based on your local demographic. You can get information about the main needs of the local uninsured from the health department. For example, you can determine that there may be a large number of uninsured adults and children in your community or a large migrant population. In that case, you would want a bilingual staff or at least a people who can communicate with clients and patients that speak...

...have a place to go for medical treatment just like everyone else. Unemployment and no insurance should not be what keeps people from getting the proper medical treatment. The new free clinic opening in our community will be available for adults and children who do not have traditional means of obtaining medical treatment. There will be several doctors on site with a wide range of specialties. Many have practices focusing on certain types of medical problems and some who can assist with any general issues. In some cases, patients may have to visit doctors off site. Because we are aware that some patients may not have the means to get to other areas, we will provide a shuttle service on preassigned days for this very reason. Doctors are volunteering their knowledge as well as their time to raise awareness and help those in the community in which some of them grew up in. We are aware that examination and knowledge is but a portion of what is needed. For this reason, we have partnered with some local pharmacies who will provide medication at a substantial discount and even free of charge in some cases. Patients will be informed of everything every step of the way and be given the same assistance as if they were paying customers. Each new patient will complete a short questionnaire informing the clinic of any existing conditions as well as report any ailments that may have risen. Based on these responses, patients will be put in categories focusing on their particular needs. Each...

Being debt free and dependent on inner city residents, the board of trustees authorized PMH to expand operations by adding an ambulatory facility in the downtown area ten blocks north of the hospital. Being open for 11 months now, Puce Health Clinic (PHC) has seen success by becoming self sufficient, increasing cliental, reducing bad debts by 2 % and minimizing the increase in their expenses. Sherri Worth, Assistant Administrator of PMH, has recognized a potential threat that could hurt their facility. Medcenter, a possible competitor, has been proposing to develop their own facility overlapping in service areas with PHC. This threat has the potential to take a third of PHC’s northern portion of personal illness patients and also 40% of potential personal illness patients in this area will go to the new location. ...Throughout the years, her words also encouraged me to gain a holistic understanding of biology and the human body. Once, while assisting at the free clinic, I discovered that a patient had taken a blood thinner earlier. Remembering from my favorite show how Dr. House ordered these drugs to treat an aneurysm and from anatomy class how they prevented production of blood-clotting proteins, I called over the dentist who rescheduled the patient to avoid excessive blood loss. I see Penn Dental, one of twelve top-ranked schools under the multidisciplinary umbrella of the University of Pennsylvania, as the best place for my continued exploration of how the mouth is a wonder to the body, geographically and philosophically positioned for interdisciplinary studies across other professional disciplines. Since its founding, dentistry at Penn has been taught in a scientific environment as a specialty of medicine, allowing dental, medical, nursing and social work students to work together at Penn’s five interdisciplinary care clinics, thereby maximizing my impact on patients, transcending oral health to systemic...
