...Breaking Down Barriers Between Departments MGMT 4655 Advanced Operations Management September 3, 2014 Breaking Down Barriers Between Departments W. Edwards Deming, father of the modern quality movement, developed a 14-point model that is intended to ensure that a quality product is produced and customer satisfaction is achieved. Point nine in the model states that companies must break down internal barriers between departments in order to quickly recognize and address quality problems. In other words, each department in an organization is an internal customer of the other departments and all must work together if the whole unit, i.e. company, is to be successful (Break down barriers, 1994). The Japanese were inspired by the work of Deming and Peter Drucker, and they have worked to develop two operational methods that serve to break down the barriers between departments. These methods are known as Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Cross-functional Management (CFM). QFD is a system that translates customer specifications into what is required in each stage of the production process, from research through sales and service. CFM breaks it down even further by separating the activities related to the company's goals for quality, costs, volume and delivery. If the activities/tasks that are assigned to each department/stage in the process are completed according to the overall plan and company goals, then the goals will be achieved. Success is a direct result of the...

...Executive Summary This is a business plan for our company, GreenArrow Sdn Bhd, an environmental friendly company, which will be selling hazardous insects’ trap by using recycled material. The purpose of this plan is to provide us a guideline to conduct the business and serves as a reminder to keep the business on track. In Malaysia, the dengue rate has been increasing significantly. In year 2013, more than 43,000 cases were reported, with 92 deaths, up from 35 dead the year before. Mosquito fogging is a common method to eliminate mosquitos but it doesn’t reduce the dengue rate. Our company spotted a great opportunity to conduct a profit making business and yet provide solution to this problem. The solution is our product, LED Mosquito Killer. It can bait and trap mosquito by luring them with heat, light and CO2. The target market can be household, firms, institutions and it can be used in many places such as home, restaurant, hospital, schools and even outdoor by using the USB cable. We are able to source recycled raw material with cheap price and we are planning to distribute the product to wholesaler and retailer. The forecast sales in the first year will be 24000 units. The startup cost will be RM 178,200.00 and the estimated net profit after deducting all expenses will be RM 108,000.00 for the first year. Breakeven can be achieved on 1 and a half year. ...Running head: Technology and Management Technology and Management The latest technology can be seen on sales floor and in offices. Innovations in technology have improved operations at companies of all sizes and helped turn small local businesses into global businesses. Coming from the state of Maine, a retail store Laurie Rodriguez used to work had more than 200 retail stores in the New England area. Working in retail, one must expect the same from each store and to mainly focus on Customer Service. The use of wireless phones has become like a lifeline as much as a necessity because salespeople continually call to know when to deliver products. There is a wireless service that is installed in all stores and is at the point of sale registers, without these, manual is no longer among options, customers want to be out fast and efficiently, these point of sale registers allow for the effectiveness of the customer’s wish, standing in line at a register does not increase sales, or improve the business, but only decreases a little. These devices are lifelines when the store is overrun with shoppers, which seems to be just about every day. Staying in touch when on the road and responding to customer inquiries in a timely manner should be a must, when using cell phones, e-mail, text messaging and social networking’s and other advances in communication will keep small businesses connected to their customer bases and improve communication within the company (Kooser, 2011). Customers...

...compare the growth dollars over the years they grew at higher rates however the increase has recently declined greatly over the last year. The majority of this decline may come from the lack of coordination between the company’s departments in the operations. Secondly, the conflicts between the different departments appear to put unnecessary stress and workloads on members of each department. When these different departments came together we found, “problems began to develop in the period following the creation of the product development division” (Brown, 2011, p. 314). The structure of this company is inadequate and is putting responsibility on departments that are not designed to handle this type of work. Micro The micro levels of The Exley Chemical Company appear to suffer from a huge separation between the marketing and the product development departments within the company. Splitting up sections of the marketing between departments is never a good idea. For example, “the product development division started using a small force of specialty salespeople to conduct pilot marketing programs” (Brown, 2011, p. 314). They also gave marketing research to another department, yet forecasting was left within the marketing department. The company is having issues in developing any type of team concept regarding to the internal customers (inner departments). It appears as...

These responsibilities including hiring new staff (recruitment), providing staff training, carrying out staff appraisal and any other issues relating to staff welfare. The staff in this department will usually have some knowledge of employment law and will be able to advise the organisation in this area. ...to the smooth, ceaseless operations associated with business. Regardless of the department, one works in accounting, marketing or human resources, understanding and using information systems properly is essential to one’s personal and business success. The information systems used in accounting are a complex combination of modern technology and traditional accounting restraints used to provide the necessary financial information to manage an organization. Benefits of computerized information systems in accounting include speed, and accuracy. However, the system also possesses disadvantages including less documentation, and complicating the process of determining where errors occur (Grudinsku & Burch, 1989, p. 325). The primary components of accounting information systems include input devices, processing, and output devices. Common input devices include computers, scanning devices, and data entry. When working with accounting information the “double entry” model of the fifteenth century is still in use today. Typical output devises include printers, computer monitors, and electronic communication devices. Together these devices are used to manage and track debt collection, finances, and analyze profit, and loss within a business. In the marketing department information, systems consist of people, equipment, scanners, surveys and procedures that a business uses to organize, and assess information needed to make accurate marketing decisions. In marketing information is the key to...

...creating their own affiliate marketing network (ePN). Now eBay has the choice of continuing to develop their ePN, go back to outsourcing their affiliate marketing network operations (either through CJ or another network) or drop their affiliate marketing program all together. Based on my analysis I feel that eBay should continue to develop their internal affiliate marketing network. They should go in this direction because the benefits offered by an outsourced network are not substantial, it eliminates the costs associated with outsourcing the network which will lead to lower transaction fees for sellers and lastly, they can eliminate the fraud that networks are notorious for. II. Problem, Opportunity, and Objectives eBay decided to discontinue the services of CJ in 2008, opting to run their affiliate marketing program internally because of the fraud issues with CJ as well as their declining net income (exhibit 1). Currently eBay is losing sellers to Amazon and Craigslist because of their higher transaction fees, which can be partially attributed to the fees imposed by CJ. Steve Hartman, eBay’s senior director in charge of global affiliate programs, believes that by handling their affiliate marketing program internally they will develop more direct relationships with their affiliates, leading to a more streamlined user experience. This case analyzes the risks and benefits of this strategy, and what affiliate marketing contributes to eBay’s overall marketing objectives. III. Analysis ...

...Case Study: Midas BUS 644 Operations Management Dr. Snell May 19, 2014 Case Study: Midas Specialization is a two-edged sword. When an organization specializes, they become experts in a particular process, product, or operation. In exchange for this deeper knowledge and ability in one factor, the organization typically suffers a loss of width in the marketplace therein reducing their potential customer base. Efficiencies should certainly be derived from this specialization and with efficiency may come greater profitability. When examining such an organization, a case study is useful to help break down the scenario and discover real-world effects of specialization. In this paper, the company Midas will be reviewed for their operational efficiencies, potential weaknesses and other negative impacts, and how, through analysis of these factors, a better business paradigm can be developed and implemented. Midas provide vehicle services related to exhaust, brakes, and shock absorbers. They do not offer general automotive services but rather specialize in those three areas. As described by Vonderembse and White (2013), this provides Midas with a number of advantages. Firstly, the limited services allows Midas to maintain a much more limited inventory which enables the workers to have the parts they need readily at hand near where work is being performed. Because of the focus on specific tasks, tools, training, and skills are also specialized and customized to fit the...

As seen in the chart below, the CEO holds all the power of the tiers and the COO is in charge of the in-flight service, strategy & real estate, and airport customer service. Most of these subdivisions require certifications and entail you to be your own supervisor. All of these positions are necessary for the company to succeed and thrive. Without any given part of the organizational structure it would surely fail. * You can compare this structure to a more totem pole structure like Buca Di Beppo. They don’t have tiers but have a pecking order. It starts with the corporate office, or planet Hollywood. Then it goes down the line from all the major positions CEO > VP > AVP > HR department (of corporate division) > Regional Manager of different states > General Manager of 1 store > AGM > sales manager > kitchen manger > supervisor > lead server > server > host > kitchen staff. In this structure there is a major line of command to be talked through before you...
