Orange County Landfill Essay

...Two landfill sites in Florida are the Orange County landfill in Orlando, and the Rolling Hills landfill. The biggest issue for the community with the orange county landfill is the smell that is coming from it. When the landfill was started, none of the homes that are in the area existed, so people are closer to the landfill than ever before. The Orange County solid waste division is said to be working on a plan to get rid of the odor, but nothing has been announced, as it relates to getting rid of the smell. For residents near the Rolling Hills landfill, there are health concerns surrounding air quality. Hydrogen sulfide as of last December, reached a level where it is a public health hazard. For the people that live in the nearby community, breathing in the highest levels of H2S for 30 minutes is high enough that it could cause headaches, and irritation of the nose or throat. Because the complaints local government came in and levied fines against the landfill, and has stopped them from bringing in more trash until there are improvements made to the facility (Florida County responds to complaints about landfill odor) (Wedgewood Community Update) (County officials close Rolling Hills landfill). 2. Illegal Immigration and Crime

...politically fueled issue. Both immigrations and crime are perceived as threats to public safety and illegal immigrants are easy targets for blame by society. This holds true in he City of Costa Mesa and in Orange County as a whole. Specifically, the Costa Mesa Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff Office has implemented policy to check the immigration status of individuals arrested for serious crimes. This policy has an affect, most notably, on the large Hispanic community living in Costa Mesa and the greater Orange County area. Many community social services agencies are caught in the middle of this politically sensitive issue, as they provide services to residents, many illegal immigrants. This social welfare policy has created a great divide between many within the community and society as a whole. Immigration has become a major issue in both national and local politics with many political officials taking both sides of the issues. Republicans and democrats are split on this issue, which has become embedded in the fight for terrorism. A effort to protect this country from future attacks from terrorist has translated to a local level of enforcing immigration laws. In an effort to decrease criminal activity in local communities, Costa Mesa and Orange County officials has taken on the issue of illegal immigration in their communities. The execution of criminals and the effects on society are most intriguing and can be debated upon both for and against the issue give a thorough elaboration on criminal executions and the effects on society. In this day and age, research not only illustrates that the death penalty is complex, in more ways than one, but has also raised questions about its relations to deterring crime and the financial impact it has on society. Using current and historical information, such as articles and scholarly articles, to support why this research is important and possible methods society could use to help improve this controversial debate. Summary The Orange County register printed an article on the death penalty and possibly being considered as immoral. “While the commission drops the dime on the mind-numbing cost of administering the death penalty, it barely hints at the moral and ethical depravity of the practice” (Mears, 2008). The article states that there are racial and socioeconomic bias towards the death penalty and how this can and may lead to a cause for concern among citizens. This seems to initiate that in most cases the targets of race are African...

...Research Paper for SOC 350 National University 25 November 2012 The Vietnamese Americans’ Successful Transition to the United States Group of Vietnamese immigrants started after 1975 to the United States started after the Vietnam War. Early immigrants were refugee boat people (refers to refugees, illegal immigrants or asylum seekers immigrate in numbers in small boat fleeing persecution or poverty). Forced to flee from their mother country and often drive into poor town neighborhoods, these newcomers have yet managed to establish tough communities in a short amount of time. More than sixty percent of Vietnamese Americans reside in the states of California, Texas, Washington , Florida and Virginia. (Rothenberg 205) As a fairly recent immigrant group, most Vietnamese Americans are either first- or second-generation Americans. They have the lowest division of people with more than one race between the major Asian American groups. As many as one million people who are five years and older speak Vietnamese at home, making it the seventh-most spoken language in the United States. As refugees, Vietnamese Americans have some of the top rates of naturalization in the 2006 American Community Survey, 72% of foreign-born Vietnamese are naturalized US citizens; this collective with the 36% who are born in the United States makes 82% of them United States citizen in total. ...understanding of reasoning. Finally it will consider whether a child acquiring the skill of reasoning is important to their education and mathematical development. In addition throughout it will examine the teachers’ role in developing high-quality mathematical dialogue. To some, the ability to reason may seem like a simple skill, however in order for a person to reason there are many fundamental skills which must be first developed. The Using and Applying Guidance Paper (DfES,2006) believes before children are able to reason they must first acquire a confidence with solving problems and thinking logically. Then they should develop the ability to ‘represent’ the problem, choosing key information and using mathematical calculations, pictures and diagrams to record their thinking. Next they must develop the skill of enquiring, asking questions to further their understanding of a problem. Finally they are able to develop their understanding of reasoning and communication. According to the Using and Applying Guidance Paper (DfES,2006) to enable a child to reason they must be ‘taught how to describe, interpret and explain what they see and how to use...

...Walnut, California, the city that I’ve known most of my 29 years. This suburban, upper middle class city lies about 27 miles out from Downtown Los Angeles and is part of the Los Angeles County. I moved here when I was barely 2 years old and have resided in this city since. Little did my parents know that the city they choose to raise their family at would be a safe, quaint and well-kept community. Though majority of its residents are Asian, I still feel that Walnut is open to all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Regardless of ethnicity or culture, we all share at least one common interest and that is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In this paper I will discuss my assessment I retrieved from my community survey as well as uncover the components of health nursing problems related to this community’s dynamics. Community Overview The community that I am assessing is Walnut, California. Walnut is known for their academic excellence and is a host to Mount San Antonio College. As stated in their mission statement, “It is a community that considers the lessons of the past, understands current and future realities, and shares a sense of cultural belonging” (Walnut Mission Statement, 2016, para 1). This residential city is accessible to four counties and is located between 3 interstates, San Bernardino, Orange and Pomona. As mentioned on the City of Walnut webpage, “Walnut is proud to be identified as one of the cities with the lowest crime rates in the San Gabriel Valley” (City of Walnut...

Hillbilly Stereotypes

... While the New York Journal uses the state of Alabama in their definition, the word hillbilly has actually been used to describe anyone in the hills mentioned by the New York Journal: the Appalachian Mountains. As defined officially by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the Appalachian mountain range extends from northern Mississippi and Alabama up to southern New York. However, as the region grew and developed, the locations to which isolated hillbilly stereotypes could be applied shrank to what ARC classifies as the central sub-region. Of the 83 counties that ARC denotes as being in the central region, 55 of these are in Eastern Kentucky. Figure one is an ARC map of the give sub-regions where one can clearly see the state and county divisions. But what makes the common citizen of the U.S.A. think that people of this region fit the definition of hillbilly other than the fact that this area is “hilly”? This paper will not discuss whether or not the term hillbilly accurately describes to the people of Eastern Kentucky. Based on the assumption that the term is derogatory and harmful to the people of Eastern Kentucky and the central Appalachian region, what steps can be taken to combat this stereotype? Contributing Influences Before taking action against the stereotype of Eastern Kentucky, one must first know how people first become aware about the stereotype. Then one must determine what causes them to think they are justified in their view of Eastern Kentucky and central...

Dea Evaluation

...Performance Evaluation of Commercial Bank Branches Using Data Envelopment Analysis Considerable research has been devoted to using multiple criteria to measure the performance of business units such as bank branches. However, bank managers continue to use traditional methods to evaluate their branch offices. In general, subjective weights for various criteria are used to arrive at a weighted average score to measure the performance of a bank branch. Potential deficiencies in an existing set of weights include bias and inconsistency with organizational objectives. This paper employs Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the operational performance of a bank branch relative to the performance of its peer branches. Utilizing data from 31 branches of a major bank located in Southern California, the use of DEA yields the following: 1) rankings of bank branches using efficiency scores, 2) identification of areas of deficiency and 3) establishment of the reference group against which a branch is evaluated. Twenty-two of the 31 branches were found to be in need of improvements in various areas. In addition to identifying best-practice branches and those that are out-of-line with the best practice branches, DEA also points to the specific changes that must be made in the less productive branches in order for them to catch up with their best-practice peer group. The findings of this study should help management in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of their bank branches. ...

...Biotic Component Paper Biotic Components Paper In this paper I will conduct research on the Bolsa Chica Wetlands that are located in an area of lowlands in Orange County California, adjacent to the city of Huntington Beach. The area is managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), whose mission is to” protect and enhance; migratory shorebird, seabird, waterfowl overwintering habitat; protect natural habitat for shorebirds and seabirds; protect nesting and foraging conditions for threatened or endangered species” The Bolsa Chica Conservancy (BCC) is a local volunteer organization that assists in maintaining the area. This dynamic, yet fragile, ecosystem has been preserved since 1965, flourishing under diligent and careful management. Coastal ecosystems include marshes, coastal waters, estuaries, and lands located at the lower end of drainage basins, where rivers and streams meet the sea or ocean (United States FWS, 2010). These complex ecosystems are composed of biotic communities; plants, animals, birds, and microbes, and the abiotic community; nonliving, chemical, and physical. According to Wright (2008) the type of biotic community found in a given area, is largely determined by the abiotic factors, such as the amount of water, climate, the salinity, or type of soil. Bolsa Chica has a wealth of plant and animal species including Sea Lettuce, Pickleweed...
