Briefly describe three or more insights you have gained in this course that will inform your continued growth as a health care manager. Share one area that you would most like to focus on, and indicate one or more strategies for doing so. Also describe steps you currently take and/or plan to take to maintain your vitality and velocity.
Coming to the New Orleans PhD residency was an eye opener. This residency allowed the writer with the motivation to want to complete her PhD. Understanding the pride that one receives when completing a PhD was something this writer wants. This residency reminded the writer why she was completing her PhD, which is to promote social change.
Upon completion of a PhD comes responsibility. Most students do not complete their PhD “just because. “ It is completed because they want to promote social change. They see a problem and instead of recognizing the problem and doing nothing, they recognize the problem and want to find a solution. This writer works with individuals with severely and persistently mentally ill. This writer has been working in this field for approximately six years; starting as a mental health worker and moving up to a clinical therapist. Her overall goal is to be an advocate for those who cannot advocate of themselves. This writer thought becoming a clinical therapist would help and it has, but to make the changes she wants, she will have to be a apart of the administration and getting her PhD will help her make the transition to help her pursue her overall goals.
Three distinguishing behaviors and practices this doctoral student can identify in development are awareness, patience, and perseverance. This student is becoming more aware of her development. She is starting to think at a higher level and is developing a scholarly voice. She is starting to ask the questions why and how can she make those changes. Being a doctoral student, there needs to be patience. Starting this journey and allow others to be “antsy” and wanting things to move forward quickly. This writer understands this journey is going to take time and wants to get everything she can out of this program. This writer is determined and will receive her PhD. She is determined and understands the hard work behind it.

Main Discussion Post 12:
The insights throughout the organizational development research course are working in group settings, leadership/management settings and skills, and interpersonal communication skills. Understanding the staff is important. However, understanding the manager’s own personality is important as well. Understanding how to effectively have each employee strive to be their best will be important to the corporation.
Participating and being a part of a group was challenging, but educational as well. Getting to know each other, the personalities, and developing time management amongst several students was difficult. It did take some time for each group member to decide their roles, but once we got our roles and decided how the work would be distributed, things went well.
One development this writer would like to continue to improve on is leadership. Leadership is important if a corporation wants to succeed. Being able to lead teams, new and old is an essential skill and an important key to accomplish tasks throughout the organization. However, working in teams with all different personalities does not come easy. Team leaders will need a strong grasp on group dynamics. Team leaders will also need a clear picture on their own skills and behaviors. Team leaders need to be able to work on one-on-one relationships and team processes (Henson, 2012). Leaders need to understand their employees and recognize when employees are becoming less engaged in their work. Leaders should be aware of how the team is functioning. When the leader understands how difficult the situation is; it is important to talk about what needs to change to improve the morale and their work. A leader who gets their team to click is not afraid to talk about the tough stuff (Harkins, 2008).
The writer’s goal for attending, completing and upon completion of her PhD program is to make positive social changes within the psychiatric healthcare system and then teach students at the university level everything she has learned so she can help her students make positive social changes. One thing this writer will take away from the course, organizational development research, is modesty. This writer knew working in a group could be difficult. However, she did not know how much she would learn about herself and how it can effect an entire corporation. Continuing her doctoral program, this writer will have the opportunity to improve her abilities and gain the knowledge to become a great, scholarly researcher. Through awareness, patience, and perseverance, this writer will earn her PhD and make the social change she wants in her by becoming a positive leader for my students and employees.

Strategies in group settings in reaching positive outcomes include: setting clear goals; define roles among group players; present open and clear communication; utilize effective decision-making tasks; balance and nurture participation; value diversity, manage conflict, provide positive atmospheres; promote positive relationships, and be an active leader (Borkowski, 2009). As the Clinical Resource Educator in Surgical Services role, it is vital that evaluation of professional enactments require the approval of all the peers in the clinical setting. As evaluation performance competencies annually become a part of personnel files, reversing the trend in being evaluated is equally fair. Continuing to care for others in health care unconditionally and respecting others in return will continue to play a vital role in the future. The admiration and trust gained from this objective has made my current position more valuable and rewarding than expected. Due process not only applies to the law, but the justice given to others in group settings or teams is rewarding, despite the circumstances is a positive for the members involved.
