Who is a procrastinator? In a perfect world, just about everyone at some point in their life has been or will be a procrastinator. As a whole we put things off for several reasons. Some of them are because we just don’t want to do it, think or assume that we don’t have the time to do it or we just don’t like doing it. It’s a part of being human and the purpose of this paper we will try and determine what we can do to overcome being procrastinators. What exactly is procrastination? Don Marquis, an American writer, poet and playwright said, “Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday”. You can find this quote at thinkexists.com. I like to think he was saying that we have a tendency of thinking that we have lots of time before something is due. According to “Webster’s college dictionary”, it is to put off taking action, to postpone or delay something that has to be done. This can be very detrimental to one’s private and daily life as long as with their professional settings also. The outline of procrastination can be started in many different manners. We naturally have a fear of failure when things aren’t going well, so we avoid doing something. Another is because we feel we are too busy with other daily activities, like jobs and parenting for example. Unfortunately, another is because we believe procrastinating works. We have a tendency to do something we like or enjoy, instead of

Overcoming Personal Procrastination

...Overcoming Personal Procrastination Overcoming Personal Procrastination Abstract This paper will identify a personal problem of procrastination, where I will find solutions to help correct this problem, evaluate the information I have gathered, and explain how I will use the information to implement correction to my personal procrastination. Overcoming Personal Procrastination In my life I think I have always procrastinated. I remember since childhood in elementary school and middle school finishing projects the last day or late into the night before the project was due. Through this class, I have learned that it is partially due to my intense perfectionism. I get nervous and sometimes anxious of the impending project. It also has to do with the uncomfortable feeling of the unknown. When I do not know what I am going to do for a project, or I haven’t read what is expected, I push it off. I tend to always hit my deadlines, but do so in a hurry which does not help me to actually learn what I am working for. I don’t always procrastinate, but I undeniably do it frequently. I definitely always mean the best- as I want to be the best. Unfortunately, procrastination does not do me any justice. In order to overcome my procrastination I will need to do more than recognize it. Of course, though, it is a very important first step to fixing the problem. Besides understanding procrastination and how it develops, I need to do more research on understanding it and find...

Time Management

...Time Management | June 12 2014 | | Overcoming The Working Struggle | Ghelarducci – Stephanie Ghelarducci – Stephanie Table of Contents Time Management Strategies 2 Procrastination 3 Defeating Procrastination 4 Overview 4 Time Management According to the article A Personal Approach to Organizational Time Management written by Peter Bregman, “The biggest and most destructive myth in time management is that you can get everything done if only you follow the right system, use the right to-do list, or process your tasks in the right way” (Bregman, 2013). This statement is false because there is so much that must be done and there is not enough time in a day to finish all of the tasks we have at hand. Living in a world filled with all this technology is still not enough to finish our day to day tasks even if we work for every single hour in the day and night (Bregman, 2013). We would still not be able to keep up with our work load along with our personal tasks that must be done, too. Thus, having minimal time in a day is why individuals stress over their work which causes more problems. Mastering time management strategies will help individuals tremendously in their work and personal lives, and decrease the amount of problems that arise in their days due to poor time management skills. Time Management Strategies It takes practice to manage one’s time and there are a number of steps one can take to help him or her in completing their everyday tasks...

Kicking Procrastination

...Kicking Procrastination GEN/200 Kicking Procrastination “I’ll start it tomorrow, I promise.” Procrastination would rank up very high as a problem that would drop by occasionally into most people’s life. Putting off difficult or undesirable tasks until later is known as procrastination. Several causes of procrastination include fear of failure, fear of success, rebellion, lack of problem-solving skills, and perfectionism. According to Jane B. Burka and Lenora M. Yuen (2007), authors of Procrastination: Why You Do It and What to Do About It, habitual procrastinators often gauge their self-worth solely by their ability to achieve. In other words, “an outstanding performance means an outstanding person; a mediocre performance means a mediocre person” (Carter, 2007, p. 20). To the perfectionist procrastinator, not trying at all is better than an attempt that falls short of perfection (Carter, 2007). For many people it is hard to say why one would have such a problem with procrastination. People procrastinate for many reasons. Excuses for putting off a task or assignment may be as simple as there is always something better to do that moment and there is always enough time in doing it later. Every reason is a valid one to the procrastinator. However, the effects of procrastination are usually negative, which should be an incentive to overcome the urge to put tasks off. Procrastination is a common problem and is very hard to overcome and to overcome this problem one would...

...Procrastination Strategy Paper I find myself putting off important task repeatedly, I am not alone. Many people procrastinate to some degree. According to Psychologists Piers Steel., at the University of Calgary [“95 percent of us report having some type of postponement problem”] (Kirsch, February 2008, p. 3). This type of behavior can lead to disaster and affect our daily lives. The key to controlling this type of habit is to recognize when we start to procrastinate and understand why it happens, then take the steps to overcome it by managing our time. Procrastinating (2002), according to Merriam-Webster's Third New International Dictionary Unabridged [is putting off tasks that need to be done right now, and doing tasks that we are more comfortable doing. We procrastinate because we feel like there is always tomorrow to do it]. Tomorrow normally turns into the next day, then the next day and we find ourselves panicking to complete a task or assignment that we had more than enough time to complete if we would have stuck to a plan. For example, you sit in front of your computer to start your assignment. Read the instructions for the first three minutes then find yourself checking your e-mails and responding to them, thus putting off starting the assignment for a later time. People procrastinate for numerous reasons. Some of the more common reasons they procrastinate are [perfectionism, fear of failure, not having a clear goal, overwhelmed with task...

...Research Strategy To Find A Solution For Procrastination Dakota Swanson GEN/200 20th September 2010 Research Strategy To Find A Solution For Procrastination “Procrastination is the Thief of Time; Year after year it steals, till all are fled” (Young, 1742, Night Thoughts I. 18). A more detailed definition, “Procrastination, the habit of putting tasks off to the last possible minute, can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life. Side effects include missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, stress, overwhelm, resentment, and guilt. The behavior pattern of procrastination can be triggered in many different ways, so you won't always procrastinate for the same reason. Sometimes you'll procrastinate because you're overwhelmed with too much on your plate, and procrastination gives you an escape. Other times you'll feel tired and lazy, and you just can't get going” (Pavlina, 2001, Overcoming Procrastination by Steve Pavlina). Procrastination like any other problem can be controlled if not solved. There are various ways in which one can begin the curative process. It is common knowledge that the first step to recovery is admittance of the problem, and then making that conscious effort to remedy that setback. To make that step, you must identify the root causes of your procrastination, how often do you procrastinate, what tasks you procrastinate more for whether is if for job related tasks or personal engagements, and the consequences. Barriers to Critical Thinking in Everyday Life

...you have the tendency to give up quickly when you face with an intellectually challenging task. Procrastination is also considered lazy. It is also the opposite of intellectual perseverance. The way I plan on overcoming this barrier with the skills from this week is by always thinking positive thoughts. Making a to-do list so that I am not always procrastinating on getting things started all of the time. The major factor that I plan on doing is to remove all the distractions that I face on a daily basis that make my critical thinking weaker. Stubbornness or tenacity is having a set of values and standpoints which helps to make sense of things, provides comfort and doesn't leave you in a state of being indecisive. A person is stubborn when they clings to their standpoints even if there is new information, and facts that places their views in question. I plan to work on being open to different viewpoints, perspectives, and new ideas. I will work to modify my ideas in the light of new information or better insight because my opinion or viewpoint on things is not always the right one The reason it is so important to overcome these and all of the different barriers are because it will allow you to excel in becoming a master critical thinker. It is also important to overcome them because it allows you to gain knowledge from many different viewpoints other than your own. Overcoming all of the barriers will allow you to become a teacher in critical thinking. Without recognizing...

By people expecting too much of themselves, they tend to become scared of writing and the essay not meeting their expectations and therefore procrastinating until the last minute. Although many more elements come into play, priorities and organizational skills are a big role in the way you may procrastinate. Many people may just need help in the organization department in order to not procrastinate and others may need help dealing with many more issues they have with the issue of procrastination. I believe in order to help prevent or totally eradicate procrastination from your work method; you must first look at yourself. Are you struggling with confidence or is it simply that you are too much of a perfectionist and nothing you seem to write is up to par? Well, the first step would be to stop over thinking everything you decide to put down on paper; it probably isn’t as bad as you think it is. When you stop over thinking, writing will come a lot easier and less forced than before and you may feel that you don't have to wait until the last minute to write your assignments. Also, with putting less pressure on yourself and constantly forcing yourself to rewrite the assignment over and over again; you’ll feel the weight of an elephant being lifted off your chest. Procrastination

...Procrastination [Author Name] Overcoming procrastination is not an easy task; it is the act of putting things off to a later date or time for no specific reason. Even the most efficient and punctual individuals become victims to it. As a procrastinator, having an unlimited amount of time to fulfill a task makes it much more difficult to complete. Everyone procrastinates at one point in his or her life; however, most people don’t know the cause of this action. It is simply an uncontrollable pattern, which can have a bad effect on work, and on you. Another problem is that you run out of ideas. As an upcoming college student, I will be required to fulfill certain task with strict deadlines. I feel as if this will be difficult for me because in high school, the deadlines are flexible and you don’t really have to worry about whether or not its late, most teachers usually accepts it with one point off. I believe it will be difficult for me to manage my time efficiently and complete my assignments on time. I have learned to create a to-do list; I try to list everything, big and small. I make sure to include the things I typically put off. Then as I work through my day I check off each of the items off my list, that way I will be able to know what I have left to finish. From past experiences, I have also learned to stop thinking about the assignment and to just do it. Most people think and try to come up with “the perfect plan”. A plan where they don’t have to make mistakes...
