Unit 8 Discussion 1 In the Unit 4 Video Case Study – Interactive Writing, the purpose of the lesson is stated as phonics and spelling. According to Armbruster, Lehr, and Osborn, “phonics instruction teaches children the relationships between the letters (graphemes) of written language and the individual sounds (phonemes) of spoken language. It teaches children to use these relationships to read and write words” (p. 11). The teacher is teaching letter-sound connections. Struggling readers would benefit from phonemic awareness activities such as rhyming, alliteration, sentence segmentation, syllables, onsets, and rhymes (Beginning Reading) (p. 12). Furthermore, the teacher could include Elkonin Boxes and counters in small group instruction to …show more content…
For example, my school using Renaissance Learning’s STAR Reading. The Renaissance Learning website pronounces the “STAR assessments are computer adaptive, using sophisticated item calibration and psychometrics to dynamically adjust to each student’s unique responses. Fully supported by extensive research, they are easy to administer and yield the valid, reliable, actionable data educators need.” Another emerging technology available to teachers is mClass: DIBELS Next/IDEL. The Amplify Insight website discloses the mClass software can build a strong reading foundation by monitoring the development of each student’s foundational reading skills and by making the most of teacher-student interaction. Likewise, the mClass website states that the software program can “quickly identify the needs of each student and inform next steps with instant analysis, reports and instructional planning tools included in the only licensed mobile version of the research-based DIBELS Next assessment.” I have personal experience using mClass with the original DIBELS assessment six years ago. I did like the software and its ease of use and reports; however, it was expensive to buy the software for the school system and then to buy Palm Pilots for each teacher using the
