...King Arthur is a mysterious figure thought to be from the sixth century AD. He was the King of Britain for thirty years and during that time consolidated all the smaller kingdoms into the one country today known as England. He also founded The Order of the Round Table, a collection of knights that helped rule the kingdom. The help they provided was as counselors to the King, and as the military defense for the country. He was best known for his repelling the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons. This is ironic because much of England today is descendent from the Anglo-Saxons. Arthur was the illegitimate son for the King Uther Pendragon, Arthur's predecessor, and Igraine of Cornwall, Gorlois' wife, one of Uther's generals. When he was born, he was taken away and raised by Sir Hector, in the Forest Sauvage(White 50). When he was a but a teen, he went to London with Hector and his son Kay. While they were there Arthur pulled a magical sword from an anvil in a churchyard. The sword had appeared many years before to mark the new king. Whoever pulled it out would take the throne. During his reign, Britain became a very prosperous nation. The knights of the Table achieved many wonderful new things, as did the general population. Arthur's rule ended because of the power of corruption that hiding things has. Lancelot, a knight, and Guenevere, Arthur's wife, were having an affair. The affair was not publicly admitted, and everything was going okay. Then some knights confronted Lancelot and...

...conceptions share a parallel in the fact they are both highly unusual. Both characters are conceived in a mystical way. Jesus is conceived indirectly by the Holy Spirit, and Arthur by a king disguised by sorcery. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is miraculously impregnated while remaining a virgin. According to the story, Mary is visited by angels who told her she is chosen to be the mother of the Son Of God. When she accepted the request to become the mother of Jesus, the Holy Spirit performed a miracle and Mary was pregnant. On the other hand, Igraine, the mother of Arthur is impregnated by a man she believes to be her husband the Duke Gorlois. Instead, Arthur is the son of Uther Pendragon and Igraine. Merlin used his magic to make Uther look like Gorlois. Uther Pendragon went into Igraine’s...

...As I was standing at the top of the castle I finally felt that I, King Arthur, was king. I would not have liked to have anyone else by my side except for Merlyn. Merlyn and I were observing this great kingdom of mine on a beautiful day. I started talking to Merlyn about how amazing the battle was and how awesome it felt to beat Lot of Orkney. He then told me that they would come again to fight, but i reassured him that they won’t be able to take me down. As I was saying this Merlyn started shoving his beard into his mouth and I knew that something I said was bothering him. Right as he was about to speak he smiles and there was a piece of white beard hair in his teeth. I tried my best not to laugh but a little chuckle was forced out of me. I ask him what’s wrong but all he says is, “I suppose you will learn someday”(222). I always have and always will hate it when Merlyn says that, I just wish that he would tell what is wrong. It would make my life and his life much easier! After I get Merlyn to speak he tells me that I will eventually have to learn to think for myself when he is gone. He then starts to talk about a girl named Nimue who he will fall in love with, but I don’t really think that that girl will fall in love with Merlyn because he is not really what girls would call a “handsome man.” Anyway, he tell me that Nimue will learn his spells and then lock him up in a cave for several centuries. After a while Merlyn finally gets to his point, he wants me to think about Might...

... In today’s society, there is still debate over whether King Arthur was a historical person or not. This is because there is no real evidence of what Arthur did or how he went about his lifestyle. Writers have different opinions on how Arthur came to be the king, how he was as the king, and what time period King Arthur lived during. Most historians and writers agree on the most popular story of King Arthur; King Uther, Arthur’s father, made a deal with Merlin the Wizard to help Uther have a child with Ygraine, the Queen of another village. The deal is that Uther has to give his child up to Merlin. Uther’s plan is a success, and he conceives a child with Queen Ygraine. The son was named Arthur, and Uther held up his end of the deal. Arthur was given to Merlin, and Merlin gave Arthur to Sir Ector, who was to raise Arthur without letting him find out his real identity. When Arthur was a baby, King Uther became ill and died. The kingdom was without a king, and Merlin had to come up with a plan. Merlin placed a sword in a stone and whoever could pull the sword out was to become the new king. No one could pull the sword out of the stone for years, so it was forgotten. When Arthur was young, Merlin introduced himself to Arthur and they started meeting after Arthur had finished his chores for Sir Ector. Merlin started tutoring Arthur and they became close friends. Merlin taught Arthur his full potential, and Arthur decided to try to pull the sword from the stone when he was about...

...High king of Great Britain, son of Uther Pen dragon and Igraine. Arthur stands as one of the greatest mythical heroes that the world has ever known. So great was the influence of Arthur, that stories of the high king traveled far beyond the realm of Britain into France, the rest of Europe, the Middle East, and even into parts of Asia. The coming of Arthur was prophesied years before he was born. Arthur was born into a world of chaos and disorder where wars between different Celtic tribes were prevalent, different Saxon raids charged through the countryside brining fear and terror, and bandits and other criminals ran free all over the British Isles, spreading crime like a disease. When Arthur took the throne however, this chaos dissolved within a matter of years and Britain became an ideal place of chivalry, honor, and justice. It is truly amazing how much of an influence that one man could have. With his advisor Merlin at his side and with the fellowship of the courageous Knights of the Round Table, Arthur transformed a chaotic land of villainy and danger into a realm of peace, tranquility, and adventure. All of Britain looked up to Arthur and spoke of him with awe and admiration. The real Arthur was most likely a Celtic general that lived sometime in the 6th century. He advised various kings to unite to fight the raiding Saxons. He was most likely a military genius. In those dark days, true heroes were very scarce and the people looked for someone like Arthur to tell stories...

...Chloe Monahan Arthurian Legend Reflective Essay After reading about how the Arthurian Legend has evolved through the centuries and is still being studied and talked about today, it is interesting how a legend can be so widely known when people are still debating on whether it is a myth of has some historical truth. Some historians say it is a pure myth with magic and made-up fairytale characters and themes, but some believe that King Arthur might have been a real person. How can it be called a myth if something such as the Arthurian Legend became such a huge part of literature that people were dedicating their lives and jobs to study this myth and find its background? On the other hand, how can something that involves magic and religion, one reality, and one fairytale, in which King Arthur is a believer of both be considered true? In the Legend of King Arthur, the character Lancelot who plays a big part in the poem Lady of Shallot, is one of the most popular characters from the legend was not even introduced into the story until centuries after King Arthur was first written about. Knowing this, it means that people were working on and evolving this myth that allegedly started as just a paragraph for many years. The reason that this myth is said to be carried out this far is because the legend is thought to have been based on a real person. If it was based on a real story, then why would there be a Magician named Merlin who performed tasks that are not reality? Why...

...The legend of Merlin began through the words of Geoffrey of Monmouth. Merlin in most stories from the Arthurian legend is described as an older, wiser character. He is a character of magic and sorcery. He travels through the Arthurian legend acting as a mentor or guide towards King Uther and later on, King Arthur. He helps King Uther to fulfill his destiny and uphold the prophecy Merlin saw of conceiving Arthur so that one day he will be king. He helps King Arthur by guiding him through his journeys of becoming and being king with his prophecies. Merlin not only has the power to vision a prophecy of the future, but also the power of shapeshifting that comes into use when helping Uther. Merlin’s gift of prophecy helps to shape and outline the Arthurian Ledged. His mysterious character keeps readers guessing of what he will envision next. Merlin, from the time he was born, has always been a misunderstood character. The people believed he had the blood of the devil because of his gifted magic. This lead people to be afraid of him. Although, once the king(s) discovered the magical powers of Merlin, he became very dependent on him. The king(s) summon Merlin a lot throughout the story in scenes of battle, question, and concern. Merlin shows loyalty to the king by being present every time that was asked of him. Geoffrey uses Merlin’s character in the time of need. In most cases, Merlin appears only when he is asked. Arthur represents a man who was the epitome of good against evil, light against darkness, and that eternal, never-ending struggle between what is right and that which is wrong. King Arthur is a legendary British leader of the late 5th and early 6th centuries, The details of Arthur's story are mainly composed of folklore and literary invention, and his historical existence is debated and disputed by modern historian. there is no historical evidence, that King Arthur ever exist…But, as people say '' no smoke without fire'' CAMELOT was declared as the chief residence of the High-King Arthur and embroidered the elaborate portrayal that we recognise today. Worried that Arthur would fall in battle, Merlin took the King to a magical lake where a mysterious hand thrust itself up from the water, holding aloft a magnificent sword. It was the Lady of the Lake offering Arthur a magic unbreakable blade, fashioned by an Avalonian elf smith, along with a scabbard which would protect him as long as he wore it.Towards the end of his reign, during the troubled...

Stewart Carter Bucina: the historic brass society series, no.8 Pendragon Press, Hillsdale New York Copyright 2012 This book was really good. This source helped me trace the development of the trombones physical form, musical use and social functions during the renaissance. I like this because my essay is on the physical development of brass instruments. With the illustration of the physical change you can see how much the trombone has changed. 2) Yale musical instrument series The trumpet John Wallace and Alexander McGrattan Yale Unversity Press New Have and London Copyright 2011 by John Wallace and Alexander McGrattan This book traces the evolution and the colourful performance history f one of the world’s oldest instrument (the trumpet), and how it rise to prominence as a solo instrument, this was a good source in some areas but unfortunately this book lacked on information on physical change, and how these physical changes affected the trumpet in certain area of being a solo instrument. 3) The Trombone Trevor Herbert Yale University Press Copyright 2006 by Trevor Herbert This source was very helpful as it helped me gain more knowledge in exploring the origins of the trombone, its invention in the fifteenth century, but also how the story of the trombones lead up to modern times. ...Knights are looked as honorable, charming, strong, and even loyal. This is called chivalry and is defined as the qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women. Another meaning of chivalry is the medieval system, principles, and customs of knighthood. This simple word played a huge part in the time frame of the late 5th and 6th centuries AD, when King Arthur reigned. Through the creation, fight, and the fall of Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table chivalry impacted greatly. Arthur was the first born son of King Uther Pendragon and heir to the throne. However these were very troubled times and Merlin, a wise magician, advised that the baby Arthur should be raised in a secret place and that...

...King Arthur: A Film Review The myth of King Arthur is full of action, adventure, chivalry, treachery, romance, betrayal and tragedy. Donna Rosenberg writes, “The story of King Arthur has appealed to writers and readers for hundreds of years because it is so complex and varied.”(419) This is what led me to choose Antoine Fuqua’s 2004 cinematic version for my film review. I have always enjoyed mythology. Monsters, magic, tragic love, heroes and villains. All genres of mythology we have read over the last 7 weeks are interesting, but the tales coming from the British Isles, especially King Arthur, are more translatable to me and my daily life. Although King Arthur’s existence is not known for sure, the ideals he strove to bring about are important in today’s society. Arthur dreamed of a better world where every man, woman and child are equals and have free will. His legendary Round Table possibly symbolizes an early form of democracy. “It will bring peace among all of his knights, since the table has nether a head nor a foot. Whenever the knights meet, their thrones, their services, and their relationship to one another will be equal.” (Rosenberg 433). The myth of King Arthur as written in World Mythology: An Anthology of the Great Myths and Epics and the 2004 cinematic version has a few similarities and many dissimilarities. Both portray Arthur and his knights as courageous and strong. In Rosenberg’s World Mythology, Arthur is asked to fight a monster that has been ravaging the...

...hangover remedy,” suggested Pawl. “You won’t be sorry.” “Noted,” said Alis, who’d been silent until this point. Pawl tossed back his head and laughed again, but Lindara slapped his shoulder and told him not to harass her poor friends. Cheers began at the start of the parade and spread down the lane. The massive crowd stood on tiptoe, each person hoping to catch a glimpse of the man who’d made the first kill. Joan realized she had forgotten to ask which man had the honor, but she assumed it was not Perceval, because he would have chattered about making a boar tusk necklace. That thought, and the raw wind, made her shiver. Just over the ridge of the lane, a group of young parade participants appeared, their chests bare, as they held aloft the Pendragon banners. Children along the lane shrieked and waved their flags, but Drea clucked her tongue. “It is far too cold to wander about half-dressed.” Joan agreed. The parade carried on. There were hunters, drummers, young children reenacting the hunt, and then, finally, Perceval, Lionel, and Ulrich appeared. Ulrich limped, but he managed. Each man paused to kiss his wife. “Where are Gawain and Wallace?” asked Drea. Perceval suppressed a smile. “You’ll see. Any moment now.” There was a deep rumbling sound of tall wheels rolling against the dirt and gravel lane. An instant later, an enormous, open cart crested the ridge. The dozen men on the cart flanked the three dead boars pierced on pikes. In the front stood Sir Daniel, sans tunic, beside...
