...Joshua Gutzmer Mr. Phinizy English 10 November 12, 2014 Synthesis Essay The supermom syndrome has jumped genders. Now it is working men who want to be great fathers. What has changed to make the working dad’s life more stressful? Balancing responsibilities, goals, and a personal life is a struggle for many people, but the most important priorities in life such as family should not be neglected. In “Double Daddy”, societies expectation of dads are to work, make money, and tend to their kids needs weather it is taking your son to practice or spending time while taking your daughter to her recital. In the text Double Daddy, the phenomenon of daddy stress affects the executive office to the rank and file, and a growing number of single dads may feel it most. Married fathers are hardly immune. This supports the idea of society’s expectation of fathers, because dads are to work and make money, not necessarily to worry about their kids until work is done. Fathers should worry financially...

...synthesis Essay Is space exploration really worth the cost? This is the inevitable question we must face when deciding how much of our tax dollars and the federal government's dollars are spent on space exploration versus things such as education, social security, medicare and health. Although space exploration could eventually make a difference in the way we live our lives and life as we know it here on Earth, we should be focused on the things that could change our lives now. Things like a cure for cancer, and a cure for HIV and AIDS. Our money needs to stop being spent on space exploration, and be put towards something that’s been proven to benefit the people of our nation. It would not be wrong to say that maybe one day space exploration could provide us with something miraculous here on earth, but in the meantime the extensive amount of money being spent on space exploration should stay here where we can make a difference now. In February of 2006, Margaret Mclean published an article on a web page dedicated to ethics called To Boldly Go: Ethical Considerations for Space Exploration. The article stated, “almost $17 billion will fly into NASA’s coffers with around $5.3 billion dedicated to space exploration” (source E). I don’t know about you, but to me this seems like an awful lot of money to be spending on something that has no supporting evidence of benefiting the United States and its people. Our government is responsible for how our tax money is spent and it is clear...

...John Edwards ENGL 1013 Composition 1 4/28/2012 Argumentative Synthesis “Up Against Wal-Mart” “Progressive Wal-Mart. Really.” Profiting an average of 1.8 million every hour, managing 2.2 million employees in over 11,000 stores in 27 countries, according to Fortune Global 500 list in 2014; Wal-Mart is the worlds largest company by revenue. Author Karren Olsson, “Up Against Wal-Mart”, hearsays for Wal-Mart employees and their supposedly unfair treatment. This opinion of Olssons is quite convincing; especially considering the borderline argument that Wal-Mart should become a union workforce due to their off the clock, low paid, overwhelming workloads. Sebastian Mallaby, author of “Progressive Wal-Mart. Really.” and columnist for the Washing Post, finds views such as Olssons comically dysfunctional. Mallaby’s brief article overrides these skeptical cruel theories towards Wal-Mart by explaining globalization. Wal-Mart’s globalizing economic decisions for the underprivileged leads Sam Walton’s idea wanting to not only build America but moreover, build the world. Confident in Wal-Mart being a cruel company, Olsson provides multiple miserable quotes from employees. For instance, introducing her essay is the portrayal of Jennifer McLaughlin, one that “wears wide-leg jeans and spiky plastic chokers, dyes her hair dark red, and works at Wal-Mart”(606). McLaughlin’s day-to-day demands from managers may be to “hop on a mechanical lift to retrieve something from a high shelf, catch...

...Compare and contrast the legacies of cultural syncretism in Africa and the Americas with the resistance to cultural change Westerners encountered in China and India. What cultural factors caused the differences in outcomes? What legacies have the differences in types of encounters and degrees of cultural change left today? Had syncretism not occurred in the Americas, how might modern culture be different? If cultural syncretism had taken root during early encounters in China or India, how might they be different today? The quest for wealth and power brought Europeans to Indian shores in 1498 when Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese voyager, arrived in Calicut (modern Kozhikode, Kerala) on the west coast. In their search for spices and Christian converts, the Portuguese challenged Arab supremacy in the Indian Ocean, and, with their galleons fitted with powerful cannons, set up a network of strategic trading posts along the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf. In 1510 the Portuguese took over the enclave of Goa, which became the center of their commercial and political power in India and which they controlled for nearly four and a half centuries. Economic competition among the European nations led to the founding of commercial companies in England (the East India Company, founded in 1600) and in the Netherlands (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie--the United East India Company, founded in 1602), whose primary aim was to capture the spice trade by breaking the Portuguese monopoly in Asia...

...Journal of American Studies, 45 (2011), 1, 113–129 f Cambridge University Press 2010 doi:10.1017/S0021875810001271 First published online 19 July 2010 Jazz as a Black American Art Form : Definitions of the Jazz Preservation Act JEFF FARLEY Jazz music and culture have experienced a surge in popularity after the passage of the Jazz Preservation Act (JPA) in 1987. This resolution defined jazz as a black American art form, thus using race, national identity, and cultural value as key aspects in making jazz one of the nation’s most subsidized arts. Led by new cultural institutions and educational programs, millions of Americans have engaged with the history and canon of jazz that represent the values endorsed by the JPA. Record companies, book publishers, archivists, academia, and private foundations have also contributed to the effort to preserve jazz music and history. Such preservation has not always been a simple process, especially in identifying jazz with black culture and with America as a whole. This has required a careful balancing of social and musical aspects of jazz. For instance, many consider two of the most important aspects of jazz to be the blues aesthetic, which inevitably expresses racist oppression in America, and the democratic ethic, wherein each musician’s individual expression equally contributes to the whole. Balanced explanations of race and nationality are useful not only for musicologists, but also for musicians and teachers wishing to use jazz as an example...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
