...Perseverance Good morning teacher and classmates. Have you ever thought about perseverance, or at least how to persevere? That’s why I’m here today, to talk about perseverance. Perseverance means a steady effort to maintain a course of action, belief, or purpose in spite of difficulty. In order to persevere, pain and a lot of hard thinking will be needed. Perseverance basically means to continue doing something in spite of obstacles. Success in life doesn't come easily. When a kid learns to stand up and tries to walk, he is found to fall down again and again. And by nature and instinct, he gets up, and again tries to step forward, although again he falls down. But ultimately, he succeeds in walking. The same thing had once happened with each one of us, when we were children. A person who perseveres has self-confidence, determination, and hardworking, that person tries again and again, and finally has success. Perseverance is the secret of success. Without it, achievements are not possible. A person who is very intelligent, and good at school, but is lethargic by nature, and reluctant to diligence, can hardly prosper in life, because he does not know how to use his brain and labor in the right direction. In this world, all the great things have been made or constructed only by perseverance. Shakespeare did not compose such voluminous works just in a day. He had to work hard during days and nights with tremendous perseverance to create such great masterpieces. The modern...

...Persistence To persist is “to hold firmly and steadfastly to a purpose”. To persist is “to undertake besides obstacles”. To persist means “to continue in existence; to last” (Persist 628). The history of mankind is a great example of persistence. Every human being has strived for the goal of survival. It is our natural instinct as animals. We have moved from caves to skyscrapers, from slingshots to rifles. At first we traveled afoot, then on horseback, and now we travel by automobile, even jet planes. Humans carry on to be the best. The first humans did this to out-live other species. As human population grew, so did technology. People did not have to worry about other animals any longer, but each other. Now we strive to be better than one another. One major aspect of becoming the best is improving oneself. Persistence is the ability to move forward through situations where a goal is desired, yet hardships arise. Persistence is very profound in the work place. The owners and CEO figure ways they can make the most money from their goods or services. Employees work to impress their bosses, hoping for a raise or bonus. Most employees work towards a promotion. Whether for respect from their co-workers, self-respect, or simply the idea of making more money, people try to advance themselves with in a company. This aspect is the person’s goal. If they are determined to achieve this goal, they will attempt to do so even if seemingly endless obstacles stand in their way. This is...

...In Robert’s Nye’s novel, Beowulf: A New Telling, the theme that perseverance in life or death conditions can help one learn something new is shown thrown Beowulf’s actions. One example of Beowulf’s action that illuminates this theme is when Beowulf keeps going to hall Heorot although the coast guard threatens him not to go: “Fighting that monster, why, it’s like fighting the sea! You can’t win!”(Nye 46). The coastguard tries his best to stop Beowulf from going to hall Heorot because he is frightened that they will all pass away. However, Beowulf persists and does not listen to the coastguard’s advice; instead, he believes in himself and keeps on going to reach his goal: killing Grendel. When Beowulf meets the coastguard again when going back...

...Perseverance is Key. It may be difficult for people to get back up after being knocked down, but they persevere and keep trying. Jews who were involved in the Holocaust had to persevere through everything. Losing their family, getting abused, getting starved, being forced to do stuff, and more. People find strength in different ways to persevere and endure a tough time. For example, Hedi was a girl in the Holocaust who had to see things happen she never imagined seeing. The Holocaust was as horrible for women as it was for men. “A Hungarian demanded she take it off and hand it to him. So mother removed the ring, threw it away, and said to him, "Now go look for it." She didn't hand it to him – she was a proud woman” (Solzbach). The women were...

...The Odyssey and Outliers both prove that perseverance is the most important quality to possess in order to achieve a happy and successful life because it helps one accomplish their goals and helps one lead to academic success. Some may argue that perseverance will not lead to happiness due to all of the hardships one has to face to achieve this; however, this is not true because in The Odyssey, Odysseus endures through many hardships in his journey, in order to accomplish his goal. Through hardships and trials, one must stop and realize ¨we are survivors, these good men and I¨(Homer 58), and can continue to fight to accomplish their goals. Odysseus was proud to share that his men and he was willing to fight through anything to reach home....

...Do you believe that there is one most important theme of the Odyssey? I’m going to be explaining why I believe that perseverance is the most important theme of the story. Perseverance is basically being determined to achieve something no matter how difficult it is. Based on this theme, the audience should learn is if you want to achieve something don’t let big challenges stop you from having it. Ulysses stopped at nothing to get back home to Penelope, wife, and Telemachus, son. He had battled through creatures, goddesses, and a witch and he was still determined to make it back before the suitors took his kingdom away from him. Ulysses fought through a war for 10 years and had no choice but to put his men through tragedy. In order...

...“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” The famous innovator, Thomas Edison, could not have summed up perseverance any better (INSERT CITATION). I define perseverance as the ability to continue on one’s path despite the obstacles that are thrown in the person’s way. The perfect example of perseverance would be a hurdler in the sport track and field. The event's objective is to proceed past all of the obstacles that are placed in the hurdler’s way. Whoever can reach to the finish line the fastest is dubbed the title of winner and awarded a medal or ribbon. Most people avoid participating in hurdle events because of their fear of stumbling over the hurdles. Surprisingly, when...

...he ever lived at all.” In the epic poem, The Odyssey, written by Homer, it illustrates Odysseus’s treacherous journey as it takes him 10 years to finally arrive home. Along the trip he faces great danger that exposes him to use qualities embedded in the Greek life and its culture. Through perseverance, loyalty, and teamwork, Odysseus is bound to get through his journey. Loyalty is vital in any alliance or tie. According to Odysseus, “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called them rest..” (9.48-50) As shown above, Odysseus is very devoted to his members and does not allow them to survive off of just a flower. He forcibly...

...Humanity’s will power and perseverance is arguably the trait that defines us as humans. As a unified race, man’s duty to himself and others is vital for survival. However, in The Tragedy of Hamlet, this belief is put to the test. The Tragedy of Hamlet is a play written by William Shakespeare. It is a story set in medieval Denmark that focuses on the protagonist Hamlet and his quest for revenge. Hamlet struggles to avenge the murder of his late father, the former king of Denmark. As time passes Hamlet discovers that the murder was committed by none other than his uncle, the new king, Claudius. Hamlet’s inability to avenge his father is seen as a hidden warning to the audience. What this means is that William Shakespeare includes a message throughout...

...Justin Barrientes 3/22/2016 Santos/2 p.m./English A Mountain of Perseverance As I began to think about whom has had the most significant impact on my life, I began to think of everyone who has been involved in my academic and athletic careers. I realized that I was looking at all the wrong aspects of my life. Many of these people have come and gone throughout my life, yet through all of them one individual remained constant, my mother. My mother is by far, the greatest superhero in our comic book that “The Barrientes Boys” call “life”. She has the strength and perseverance of an elephant and the loyalty and courage of a lion. Her heart and determination are traits that we can only hope to have one day for ourselves. Our mother is a strong woman. Whether by continuously working her way up the mountain of parenthood, pushing herself to go to night school after long strenuous days at work, or combatting the crippling parasite we call “breast cancer”, she has never overlooked her role as a mother. According to her, “she has never swayed from her virtues and she felt it was her duty to instill in her boys the same values, principles, and virtues that were instilled in her”. (Barrientes, M) If there is one thing our mother has shown us, is that with a positive attitude, determination, perseverance, and the right amount of effort, anything can be accomplished by anyone. “I have watched my wife struggle with running a household while trying to juggle returning to college full-time...

...Srikar Gutta Hobbs HEnglish - 2 23 August, 2016 Into the Wild 1. McCandless didn’t conform particularly well to the bush-casualty stereotype. Although he was rash, untutored in the ways of the backcountry, and incautious to the point of foolhardiness, he wasn’t incompetent-he wouldn’t have lasted 113 days if he were. Ant he wasn’t a nutcase, he wasn’t a sociopath, he wasn’t an outcast. McCandless was something else-although precisely what is hard to say. A pilgrim, perhaps.(Krakauer 85 Adventure and Perseverance) (E)Jon Krakauer reveals the good in McCandless that is hidden from all his other previous mistakes. Although McCandless struggles with the concept of intimacy, he is gifted in the act of perseverance. Another thing McCandless has learned is survival, as presented with how long he stayed alive with limited resources. McCandless is a hard working individual as Krakauer as stated through the theme of perseverance. McCandless has many travel...

...war, in Japan and after he returned from war. After returning from war, Louie struggled within himself from the memories of his time during the war. Luke Zamperini, Louie’s son, once said that “[his] father was reminded about his promises to God on the raft and in the prison camp” and that “he would seek out and serve God should [h]e get him home alive.” Therefore, Louie turned his life around and found his purpose and chose to let go of his demons. He accepted God and was able to find forgiveness to those who did him wrong. His faith and the power it had over him allowed him to survive the nightmares and led him on the road to a better life. Regardless of the tortures and horrors Louie faced within his captivity, his resilience and perseverance was a reminder that a person’s strength comes from within. Louie’s worst demon that plagued him in the POW camp was Mutsuhiro Watanabe, also known as “The Bird.” The Bird was a man who treated others like animals. Their punishments were abusive and inhumane. Louie, along with other POW’s, had scars that to some seemed impossible to heal, but Louie remained unbroken. Even with constant abuses from The Bird, he continued to resist and defy him. His spirit never withered away, but persisted. His experiences led him on the path of forgiveness and allowed him to confront his demons once again. Louie wrote a final letter to The Bird and expressed that through God all the “[l]ove replaced the hate [he] had for [him]”(Hillenbrand 405). His ability...

...One of my greatest skills is perseverance, and I discovered it during a very difficult time in my life. For several months in the beginning of my junior year, I had a major problem with pole vaulting. Often, I would be trying to jump in a way that I had successfully done many times before, but for some reason, I would run through every single attempt. Physically, I should have been able to jump, but psychologically, I could not do it. I ran through hundreds of times without knowing why I was doing it or what I could do to change it. The experience was immensely challenging for me. I had been pole vaulting long enough that it had become a way that I defined myself. Not only that, but as I got more frustrated, I put more pressure on myself, which...
